  • Grey seal in ballet pose, Donna Nook, Lincolnshire, UK

  • Salvador da Bahia, Estado da Bahia, Brazil It is impossible to capture the aura and essence that is Pelhourino, located in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The colorful colonial architecture, the midnight music concerts, the crowds and the market, the church laden streets – all of this make for an amazingly rich experience. As we returned back to our pousada late in the evening, we stopped by to visit yet another nearby church and chanced upon this meditative little nook. • Grey seals in Britain make up around 50% of the world population and are found mainly around the exposed rocky northern and western coasts, particularly uninhabited islands in the Hebrides and Orkney. Coming to sandbanks or sandy beaches, as at Donna Nook, is relatively unusual. At Donna Nook breeding starts late in November. This compares with September in Wales and October in western Scotland. The pups are gone into the new year.

Between December and February thousands of seals converge on the beaches to give birth to pups. It is an amazing sight, I will return again in the winter this year to view these beautiful animals again. Please view large!

Donna Nook National Nature Reserve (NNR) is probably the best place within the U.K. for photographing grey seals. Each year, as autumn rolls into winter, hundreds of grey seals begin hauling themselves out onto Donna Nooks’ sandbanks to give birth to their pups. Here the most important activities of the grey seal calendar are played out, giving photographers unprecedented opportunities to capture dramatic pictures of this spectacular period. Grey seal pups put on weight very quickly, feeding on their mother’s (called cows) fat-rich milk. Over just eighteen days they triple their weight (the suckling period). Cows stay with their pups during this period and do not feed, so they lose about 10lb in weight each day. Please view large!

  • This is one of my favourite places in New Zealand, Cosy Nook is right down on the Southern Coast of New Zealand, it is a very rocky little bay with a natural safe deepwater anchorage, Cosy Nook is very different to any other bay in the area. • Taken with a Canon 400D, Canon 100 – 400 L series lens @ 400mm, F5.6, shutter speed 1/500 second ISO100, edited in Photoshop Last December I visited Donna Nook on the East coast of England. Every winter a huge population of grey seals visit the beach to give birth to pups. The location is an RAF bombing range which ironically keeps the beach safe and undisturbed; the RAF do not actually bomb when the seals are there. All being well I will be visiting this location again this winter with some of the guys from rb if we can get time off work together. Please view large

  • The Donna Nook Grey Seal Colony / Taken today 19/11/09 The British population of grey seals is of great international conservation importance and we are fortunate to have a thriving colony on the Lincolnshire coast. For much of the year the seals are at sea or hauled out on distant sandbanks, but during the winter they come to breed near the dunes on the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve at Donna Nook. They are present on the beach in November and December. The RAF Bombing Range at Donna Nook provides the seals with a relatively disturbance-free site for hauling out. The seals are not the least bit concerned by the planes. Staff at RAF Donna Nook make every effort to make sure that no harm comes to any animal because of military activity. The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust manages Donna Nook as a Nature Reserve with the agreement of the Ministry of Defence. / PaulThompsonPhotography Canon 5D Mk2 / F5.6 / ISO 160 / 100-400L
