Hi there RedBubblers. / I have a question for the administrators. My photo “Emerging” when viewed large looks somewhat blurred where the tree branches meet the sky. This doesn’t appear on the file saved on my PC. If I were to have this image printed and framed would the blur/image noise be visible? / Thanks for your help. / P

Sydney Produce Markets. Saturday. Free entry. A huge echoing iron warehouse of mystery, fascination, noise, people and vegetables. Or, maybe, a place of fascinating people and mysterious noisy vegetables. Shouts of “dolla, dolla, dolla” ring out from one seller sparking competing refrains from alternate stalls. The shouting match builds to a crescendo and dies quickly as customers gather. “What’s that” I say, pointing to something that looks like a bag of flower stems without the nice flower bit and smelling vaguely of garlic. “Garlic stems” the seller replies. / “How much?” / “Two dolla” It’s early in the day and I don’t have any dollas so I proffer five bucks. Taking my garlic stems and my two dolla change, I slip into a aisle between stalls of oranges and cabbage.

Moderators, I love your work, but some of you really could ease up on the bubblemail and save it for occasional important communications. I don’t join groups to hear about the mundane day to day issues of what happens in the group. There are forums and journals for that. I know, it’s an extremely minor point, but with so many tidbits coming in from so many directions, information overload is rife. I opted out of bmail once before, and I fear I’ll have to do it again and force people who want to contact me personally to jump through hoops. If there was a way to opt out of group bmails per group, I’d do it in a flash. I don’t want to single anyone out, so I’m not adding this to any groups, thereby defeating the entire purpose of this little rant. Cest la vie. :)

After shooting in a very poorly lit location last Sunday, I need to do a little clean up of most of the photos I took. I’ve been looking at purchasing some noise reduction software. So far I’ve narrowed it down to either Noise Ninja or Neat Image . Currently I’m leaning towards Neat Image, as it is giving me results closest to what I want. But its hard to know what is possible after you get to know the software a little better. To be clear, I don’t want to completely remove all the noise, I just want to clean up ISO 800 – 1600 shots. They tend to look unnatural with out some grain / noise in the shot. So all of you out there in the Bubble, any recommendations?

Well after playing round with a few different applications, I settled on Noiseware Community Edition. While I am not completely happy with the results, it was good enough for me to get the picts out. When I get a chance I think I am going to revisit the Noise Ninja and see if I can coax something better from it. Anyway here are some of the images from last Sunday. Let me explain a little about them first. Some of my friends are involved in medieval re-enactment. Every so often (usually once or twice a year) they use the fire training facility in Alexandria (Sydney, Australia) to re-enact a tower / fort battle. The following shots are from inside the tower, using my trusty Nikon D70 and a sigma 10 – 20, most shot at ISO 1600: Click on the image for a larger version, a few more shots here .

Thanks everyone for the huge wave of comments and favortings, it’s been a real lift. I grabbed my new camera this week, and got out and about to take photos of it. I’ve got a huge few weeks coming up, so I’m cramming in as much camera time as I can to prepare. Tomorrow, I’m off to the Cherry Rock festival in Melbourne, as a photographer for www.fasterlouder.com.au… it’s my first press pass type gig, so it’s nerve racking. The fact that it’s been moved from a laneway festival, into a series of shows at the Palace due to last minute mayhem makes it more challenging. I was on “band & social” shots, but that is goig to be tough as heck in there. We’ll see how she goes. Next week is my first planned photoshoot, that might be used for a magazine cover… more on that later though, I’m to scared to think about that at the moment Back to the D300… here is some of my favorite shots so far Chord – f1.8 1/500 ISO3200 Unimaginable ISO from my D80, I knew it was going to be better…. but that image has processing no noise reduction at all City Lights – f1.8 1/50 ISO3200 This came from fooling around in burst mode. The photo was taken outside the now infamous Spleen Bar at around 2am. I was annoying Seana by holding down the shutter release, and reeling off 6 frames per second… incredibly, 10-15 excellent photos came out of it, more due to her natural grace than my skill City Lights 2 – f1.8 1/160 ISO3200 (seeing a trend here?) This is my favorite, simply due to how impossible this photo would have been for me previously. Without a flash, and only a street light to work with, the D300 made this look like I knew what I was doing. Hopefully Seana reads this, so she finds out that this was the first jump she did…. the next 4 I made her repeat was more to amuse myself than to get another shot – the candid impromptu ones always look better ;) Focused – f1.8 1/30 ISO1600 Not the most action packed or energetic shot of the night, but one that I love. I’ve always had to dull the colours with high ISO shots from the D80. This came out clean and warm, without any of the colour bleeding I’m used to seeing A bigger collection of some of th band shots taken from the night are here So Cherry Rock tomorrow, which will be an awesome opportunity to catch some seriously rocking bands and fans in action. Prepare for another wave of ISO3200 photos then… for anyone 50/50 on upgrading to a D300 from a D40/D70/D80/D200… you have to do it.. now. Hopefully I’ll come to grips with it a bit more in the coming weeks, and really start to show what it can do

I guess it is understood, but I will say it again. NEVER use your original pictures, open in Photoshop and immediately SAVE under a different file name. / / Now noise. Despite camera manufacturers promising high ISOs are good, they generally aren’t. Anything above 200 ISO on my Canon 30D gives unacceptable grainy features. NOISE. / / There are lots of noise reducer software applications around. But almost all give the same plasticy looking result. Among those that are best are NEAT IMAGE or NOISE NINJA. There is a much better result that can be obtained by using Photoshop. First, change you image mode to LAB. / / In the Layers pallet, go to CHANNELS. Select A then FILTERS>GAUSIAN BLUR>5% Select B then FILTERS>GAUSIAN BLUR>5% Select LIGHTNESS then FILTERS>NOISE>REDUCE NOISE Change the mode back to RGB. / / This should be better. But all noise reduction will in someway or other reduce the level of detail you had previously.

David Harris asked …..and okay, for all those interested in the continuing saga started with the portrait of Larry I posted yesterday….here ya go! The third chapter and a synopsis are up on my writing page. As you’ll see, the names are changed to protect the guilty, but of the two main characters, Lucien and Bijou, it’s pretty easy to tell who’s who. I’d love to know what you think, and for those of you with the interest and patience to read it, thanks for doing so. And thank you especially David, for the shove. / Best wishes to you all, / Barbara

okay, so it has been longer than a week but my internet was suspended. / It turns out that camera work with 35mm SLR’s is a lot harder than i originally thought, after the week i got the photos put onto disc this week. about 90% are really grainy, though it does suit it all quite well. also the camera is 37 years old, so its not only the user. the images are: raindrops / sheep on a hill / Tuuurtle / Leaf Drop / Lamb Chops so as you can see the images are generally grainy and their file size was ridiculously small, but i think it was good and i enjoyed myself.

I stumbled upon a great Flickr group the other day called Noise and Dust Through The Viewfinder, which was created for people to upload their best Viewfinder Textures for use on commercial, digital TTV work! You can peruse the gallery and use them for your own work!!!! I have used them in my work and will always refer back to this journal for proper credit. If you have used any, post a link below so that we can all share!!! Cheers! ~ B :o) P.S. Note: I have updated information in regards to Dillon’s question… In regard to commercial use, the group’s creator/moderator says this (in the group’s forums): “Just by posting in this group, you agree to donate your TTV’s for all creative work. This doesnt mean taking the image and passing them off as your own… If you dont agree with this, then please remove your TTV’s from our lists. (not that we want to lose any!)” He specifically created the group to find TTV Textures to use in commercial work. (I am assuming “commercial” implies royalty free as long as credit is provided.) By uploading to the group, members agree to this. If there is any concern about it, the originator of the image can be contacted via Flickr or you can post in the group’s forums. These are my pieces which use any of the above TTV Viewfinder Textures (will add as I create more):

  • First 1620 Featured Artist - let's give her some NOISE!!
    by Jaybe

This fortnight’s featured artist is Jess White / !http://images-3.redbubble.net/img/users/s…

This fortnight’s featured artist is Jess White / Most of my life, i’ve grown up in small country towns in Australia, surrounded by the beach and the bush. This has been a big part of my artistic influence when it comes to Photography. I’m currently studying full-time in Multimedia, learning new things, such as 3D animation. Art has always been a big part of my life, born into a rather artistic family, I enjoy all forms of art. While photography remains my strong point, i’ve recently begun drawing digitally, And i’ve found I quite enjoy it. Art is such a personal journey…and we all have different feelings about what touches us and why….do you remember the first piece of art you saw that just took your breath away? / - I’m very inspired by my late mother, she was also very involved in art. When I was young, My grandmother showed me a large collection of my mother’s artworks that she had collected. I’d had no idea of how tallented she was, and I was completely blown away by her abilities. How is your support system for your art…do your friends and family encourage you and how? / - My friends are a huge part of why I love art so much, alot of my friends try to keep updated with all my new art, and I often present my art to my friends before posting it to the public. They’re always willing to drive me places when I want to take some pictures, or tolerate my camera in their faces when I need my own personal models. Looking into your own portfolio right now, what piece of your art do you like the most…and why..? / - I’d have to say “Stone Tower”, mostly because of how much effort I put into setting the photo up, collecting the huge rocks, climbing the boulder I sat them on, carefully ballancing them on one another. The frustration when they fell… On my foot. And then waiting for the waves to crash high enough to capture in the picture. It’s hard not to love the photo when you’ve put hours into just setting it up. I’d like to thank 1620 for considering me for this feature. I hope everyone enjoys what my gallery has to offer. Thank you Jess…..

PefectRAW 0.6 is on and you can download it from here by going to the bottom of the page. The new implementations of PerfectRAW 0.6: 1. AFD interpolation 2. Luminance extraction for every interpolation algorithm (for AFD it is extracted inside interpolation, and for the rest after interpolation). 3. Raw noise attenuation for high ISO images, based in texture detection using AFD interpolation. This attenuation is only for high ISO images and can be used with any interpolation algorithm, because it is done before interpolation. It depends on two parameters, the first one (from 0 to 100) is the noisy pixels detection, the second one (from 0 to 100 again) is the level of attenuation for those pixels (0 none, 100 full). The idea is to reduce noise without removing texture, so you can get fine grain and less color blotches. Is very easy to reduce the noise of resulting image in Photoshop or whatever noise reduction software you use. If you use it in noise free images it will do almost nothing. 4. Small changes in the program GUI (better TAB behavior). If you want to know and see what is AFD and how it performs at noise reduction among other software: ACR and DxO, check this link: http://www.ojodigital.com/foro/perfectraw-perfectblend/230949-perfectraw-0-6-alpha-2.html#post2425237 PerfectRAW starts to forms it’s personality and importance by preserving by most useful features of a RAW converter (WB, noise reduction, highlight recovery etc.) and working on improving new techniques of revealing. Converted to 16 bit. TIFF in PerfectRAW and finished in Photoshop:

I am somewhat alarmed to note that the weather this weekend will be what meteorologists describe as “lovely”. Now, there was a time when I was delighted to hear that the weather would be lovely, especially in early spring. I’d get my beloved sea kayak onto the roof rack and head for the Thames and have a lovely, long paddle about 15km upstream and then drift back down nice and leisurely like. Sadly, I no longer have a sea kayak. It was too big for London and my ex secretary type lady grew tired of having it cluttering her garden so I sold it. Bah…. / Read the rest here

Hello, out there to you in bubbleland. I am sitting at home wondering where I could find some fellow bubblers who enjoy very, very, abstracted photography. I have joined a couple of abstract groups but am still not seeing similar images to mine. I would love to converse and share with someone who enjoys the sensation of colour and tone, and grain (or these days noise), without requiring meaning, or form, or struicture, in the work. I know I am a bit of a crazy person, but maybe there is another crazy person out there too, who just wants to revel in colour. If you are out there, take a look at my site, and if you like the abstracts then get in contact and we can share the reverie together. Take Care, / Rob

don’t you think its sad when you come across some people who have no respect for anything other than their own image? Now, I’m not aiming this at any particular generation, even though the people I’m talking about are younger than me; as a teenager, I know how irritating it is to have people say ‘well in MY day..’ (trust me. It’s annoying.) I just think it’s really really sad when you ask some people to please be quiet, because you or your friend has a headache and they’re making it worse by screeching and giggling loudly, they deliberately become louder to mock you. If I had no reason for asking them to stop, yes. But no, I asked because they do it every single bus journey, and my friend was feeling ill. Moreover, they mocked me because they seem to like mocking authority. As a sixthformer, it is my duty to maintain order on the bus and try and prevent behaviour that’s upsetting everyone. Some people seem to think this is obnoxious, an abuse of power, stuck up etc. I don’t, I think its common sense to not mock people for doing this, and I don’t think its mature to care more about what your friends think is cool than other people. What also upset me was that the only response from my fellow sixthformers, including the head boy who is almost as bad as the kids in questions if you ask me, was to say ‘well you shouldn’t be standing up.’ which really DID NOT help. Sorry to rant at you, but I was just so…angry about this and redbubble is generally as safe place to let off steam about this sort of thing without being accused of, I dunno, bullying.
