These are rather like broad tagliatelle and I prepared the dish like this… / Roast about 10 cherry tomatoes cut in half, in olive oil with 5 garlic cloves and a sprinkle of dried chili for twenty minutes. Halfway through the roasting, add some small whole mushrooms. I used oyster, buna-shimeji and shiro-shimeji varieties. Meanwhile bring some water to the boil, add salt and the pappardelle. After 5 minutes, add a handful of baby spinach leaves and cook for a further 6 minutes. / Serve the pasta with the roasted, tomatoes, garlic and mushrooms. / Total preparation and cooking time 25 minutes. Buon appetito! The lighting was overcast daylight (the best diffusser) through my kitchen window. N.B. This image is now for sale as laminated kitchen art! Summer…goodbye…
I was a young fashion photographer’s assistant who had also photographed racehorses trained by my father. ITV heard the story and wanted to interview me with pictures of girls and horses. In this picture shot for Biba’s, a world famous boutique in Kensington High Street in the 60’s, I decided to combine them both. I borrowed the 20mm lens and the 250 exposure back from my boss, John Cowan, whose studio was used in the 1966 cult film Blow-Up and set off for Sussex. The 20mm lens had only just been introduced and was the first of it’s kind. Another take with beautiful model, singer and dancer Sydney Jo Jackson, who was a real pleasure to work with. The delightful Nicola Hamilton came over to do the make up at very short notice. Part of the brief was to produce some B/W shots, and as I was after a low key effect with smooth tones, I rigged a black tent arrangement to stop light bouncing around the room and give maximum density to the shadow areas. Summer is not too far away and this soup is a great way to consume that flood of tomatoes when you grow your own. Come to think of it, this tastes great anytime, so why wait? Cream of Tomato and Basil Soup 1 Onion / 4 Garlic Cloves / 1 Long Sweet Red Pepper / 12 Medium Size Tomatoes / 2 oz or 50g Butter / 250ml Chicken Stock / 75ml Double Cream / 1 Desert Spoon of Dried Basil / Some Fresh Basil / ¼ Tsp Ground White Pepper / 1 Level Tsp Sea Salt Peel and chop the garlic cloves and the onion. De-seed and chop the long sweet red pepper. Melt the butter in a large saucepan and add the onion, garlic and sweet red pepper. Cover and simmer gently stirring now and then until the onions are soft – about ten minutes. Meanwhile, cut the tomatoes in half, splitting where the stalk was. Cut out a V to remove the hard stalk remnants and roughly chop the tomatoes. Add them to the other ingredients and bring everything back to a simmer. Add the dry basil, salt and pepper, cover, and let it all stew gently for about 20 minutes stirring occasionally. Add the chicken stock and simmer gently for another ten minutes. Remove from the heat and now blend all the ingredients in a liquidiser or with an electric hand blender. Return it to the saucepan, taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Stir in 50ml of double cream saving 25ml for presentation. Serve with some torn fresh basil leaves and a swirl of cream. Revel in the taste, consume luxuriously then relax for ten minutes. Take the dog for a walk. Captured this image aboard the Cruiseship “Valor”, during a 7 day Western Caribbean Cruise. Some of the ships’ interior was quite interesting and warranted a few photo sessions. This is a 15 second exposure of some empty barstools, shot from the floor with camera angled upwards. Image made with tripod mounted Nikon D300 and Nikkor 18-70mm lens. The image itself has been run through ReDynaMix for an HDR “feel”, then converted to B&W, then with several layers gradually punched through the layers to achieve the selective coloring on the barstools from the original color HDR image. / Please view in Large to see all of the detail ….

Calligraphy (from Greek κάλλος kallos “beauty” + γραφή graphẽ “writing”) is a type of visual art. It is often called the art of writing (Mediavilla 1996: 17). A contemporary definition of calligraphic practice is “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner” (Mediavilla 1996: 18). The story of writing is one of aesthetic evolution framed within the technical skills, transmission speed(s) and materials limitations of a person, time and place (Diringer 1968: 441). A style of writing is described as a script, hand or alphabet (Fraser & Kwiatkowski 2006; Johnston 1909: Plate 6). Nikon D50 / Nikkor 70-300 VR
Forest fires and heat throughout Alaska have obscured the Chugach range and limited opportunities to practice landscape photography. I learned much after posing the query, What makes a good landscape photo?, but must wait to work on better foregrounds. However, upon reflection, ahem, other photographic opportunities exist. Sandhill cranes prepare to fly to warmer climes. Clouds enshroud the Kenai mountains behind them as they fly over Cook Inlet. I had this printed quite large and feel delighted with the clarity of the cranes! Dedicated to Australia’s Barbara Burkhardt, with whom I had tea and a moment of joy. Nikon D90 / Nikkor 70-300mm lens Featured in The X – Human Sentiment group Photo taken at Madrona Farm on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. I spent the afternoon at a charity auction today and was able to enjoy a lot of pretty amazing music. Leeroy Stager was one of those talents. Listen to A Hundred Million Reasons Leeroy Stagger is a Canadian alternative country singer-songwriter. Raised in rural British Columbia, Stagger worked in several local bands until gaining attention from acts such as Hot Hot Heat and Carolyn Mark. Reinventing himself as a singer-songwriter, he released his debut independent EP, Six Tales of Danger, in 2002.
Our part-time gardener. / Why hike for four hours, only to find a bull moose pruning bushes and tree in our ‘burb? We enjoyed a good, long hike with intermittent rain and spotted two bull moose far in the distance. Too far away to capture. What better welcome home party than this cutie safe in our suburbs. I cropped part of the power lines and added a light blue tint to the sky, since it was raining and grey and drizzly. About size and weight, wikipedia has this to say: / “On average, an adult moose stands 1.8–2.1 m (6–7 ft) high at the shoulder. Males weigh 380–720 kg (850–1580 pounds) and females weigh 270–360 kg (600–800 pounds).[7] The largest of all is the Alaskan subspecies (A. a. gigas), which can stand over 2.1 m (7 ft) at the shoulder, has a span across the antlers of 1.8 m (6 ft) and averages 634.5 kg (1,396 lbs) in males and 478 kg (1,052 lbs) in females.[8] Typically, however, the antlers of a mature specimen are between 1.2 m (3.9 ft) and 1.5 m (4.9 ft).”
