Dreamcatchers were originally created by the Ojibwa tribe as a charm meant to protect children from bad dreams. Bad dreams would become caught in the web and would disintegrate in the light of the morning sun, while good dreams would pass through the hole in the center.(summarized from Wikipedia) I originally intended to paint the ‘nightmares’ caught in the web, but they just didn’t seem to fit in the composition. After much experimentation and deliberation, I chose to leave them out, and up to the imagination. / I’ve wanted to paint this image for years…it comes from a time in my life when I felt very much alone and was going through some very rough times. I had trouble sleeping and was plagued by nightmares, but I had a dear old cat who, when he slept next to me, kept the bad dreams away. / This painting is for Wikkit. What is it like to leave, to go away not come back. I probably think about it way too much, I used to want to go so badly, more for the sake of it than anything else. Right now though, I have reason to stick around. / I touched a leaver on this morning, the feeling didn’t linger the way it did the other day, It was cold, I expected the warmth like i am used to, the feeling of acceptance of my touch being absorbed into the skin. At least he had his hat with him as he was on his way, its alright, it meant something to us to see it go with him, the smiles formed beneath the tears dispersing them at least for a little while. / One foot in front of the other we carried an empty box a moment after the last glances of the dust trails left behind. / Where did you go? i can only wonder, you say you’ll be there on that day you spoke, but will you really? or is it just a pleasant thought that can be believed to be true, I’ll smile for you. / / . So I have no studio at all for I don’t know how long…it is half installed…the other half is being rebuilt as it can’t get through my staircase without smashing my house up…a case of measuring errors on their part…last night we had the first snow flurries of the season…at midnight I pulled back the curtains to look out and this is what I saw in the Light from the Window...as always Frost says it for me.
