This composition came to fruition around midnight in the middle of nowhere in western NSW. I originally conceived the idea and how it would look and work many years prior but had not much success til this night. enjoy :) Canon EOS A2, Velvia 50. / ©T.Middleton2008 / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / / / / more of my meteorological photography can be seen at / thunderstorms more of my outback Australian photography can be seen at / the Aussie outback
Ocean at night (taken with a slow shutter speed)
This shot was taken at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, CO. The most amazing electrical storm came through. It was quite a ways in the distance. The cloud coverage was interesting which sat low over our heads. Lightning flashed about every three seconds. It was truly spectacular. It never rained where I was standing. Noise Reduction software applied due to the high ISO setting. I put the camera on a tripod and kept clicking. The pool house was in the foreground and Cheyenne Mountain in the background.
Detailed shot of multiple lightning strikes in the Arizona desert.
Lightning striking in the mountains behind a home in the Arizona desert.
Two detailed lightning strikes, one making a circle in the sky, with nice cloud definition and a desert landscape.
Huge lightning bolt striking in Cave Creek, Arizona.
A widespread thunderstorm out to sea, seen from Sawtell. There was a lot of activity – all very distant, and many discharges both within the thunderheads and below. / / .......................................................................................... / Image Copyright Duncan Waldron © 2007 / This image may not be reproduced without permission / .......................................................................................... / /
In the warm summer night, I watched this amazing dry storm cell pass over me from the West. It looked like it was going to cross right over top of me – so I made an escape plan (run like hell!) But in the end, it turned north and head away from me – not before I captured this. Captured in Cave Creek, Arizona, this was at the end of a short but powerful storm. The lightning was much too close, couldn’t stand with the tripod, just ran to it between strikes. Didn’t get too many keepers that night, but was happy with this one. Wish I had a better foreground, but sometimes you have to take what you can get. / / Other lightning shots: / / / /

A 4 second exposure over Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria…This thunderstorm really got going and had me licking my lips with enthusiastic anticipation as frequent pulsating ‘blue’ and ‘purple’ tinged bolts screamed down from the heavens…a bit of a pity it weakened after 10minutes and 10km’s short of my location. I still managed to capture this awesome staccato bolt though ! / / / EOS A2, Fuji Velvia 50 view this image large bubblesite / photography blog / portfolio ©T.Middleton2009 —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / / / *see more of my weather related photography by clicking below / /

Lightning was striking middle and to the right of this frame and not much was landing over the Hi-Rises of Surfers Paradise. I made sure I had Q1 just inside the frame and it managed to get hit, I caught half of the bolt but missed the half that went left. / This spot has potential, just need the storms to not drift so far south. / Taken @ The Southport Pier
First light on the snow from Nov 12th. From the Bridgers, looking south toward the Gallatin Range around Bozeman, Montana. I got up before the sun came over the Bridgers to catch the first light. /
It did look promising for a while though the storm split and drifted inland and out to sea. Still managed to land this bolt at a guess, hitting Cheveron Island just west of Surfers Paradise. / Over looking the Southport Broadwater towards Main Beach and Surfers Paradise. 05/12/09
