This is a composite photo taken in Shalimar, FL near the edge of the bay. It was a glorious summer night. I applied the NIK skylight filter to deepen the reds in the picture. I also shot the sun on the same night to the west of the bank. I’ve combined them for a rich summer night shot. / /
She was watching the rain fall. I said her name and when she looked I took this photo. / B&W / / More photos /
b&w version per request / original: / This was taken on my parent’s back porch on a Friday evening. Fridays are “family night” and generally the kids play outside but it was raining so my niece was watching the rain fall. I said her name and when she looked I took this photo. So that’s the story behind the title. :)
Lee dancing on the cliff edge. The colour in the top cloud is the moon halo. The good news for this shot was that this lovely rockpool lined up beautifully with the moonpath. The bad news was that the rockpool was perched on the edge of a cliff and between the top of the pool and the edge of the cliff there was only an 8” sliver of rock for Lee to stand on. Plus it was blowing a gale (that blur at Lee’s back is her hair blowing in the wind and the chill factor was less than 10 degrees). All Lee had on was this strapless flimsy dress and she kept having to hop out of shot to put her coat and boots on to warm up. And then the idiot photographer would say things to her like “Can you do some rotating pirouettes?” and she had to remind him “You know I’m standing on the edge of a cliff here!” and then shed did them anyway!! It certainly helped that Lee used to be a gymnast but brave or what!! So who would like to volunteer to be my next model :-) Shot off the Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park, Sydney Australia. A beaut example of a Barking Owl and the large, nocturnal eyes which help him in his night time hunting. This image featured in the group Australian Wildlife in September 2009. Thanks so much!

My good friend Caroline commented that she liked the “icy” tones in this one. Since I read those words I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. I’ve spent all day thinking that I agree with her…..this image looks cold…. So my thoughts went to one of my favourite novels of all time, “The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe”, and the youngest of the Pevensie Children, Lucy, The first to discover the secret winter-bound land of Narnia. So, in honour of nagging thoughts & curious little girls, I’m re-titling this image. 21|29cm / paper 120g/m,watercolour,pens Maria as Nyx for “The Greek and Roman Goddess “challenge in THE DIVINE FEMININE In Greek mythology, Nyx was the primordial goddess of the night. A shadowy figure, Nyx stood at or near the beginning of creation, and was the mother of personified gods such as Hypnos (sleep) and Thánatos (death). Her appearances in mythology are sparse, but reveal her as a figure of exceptional power and beauty. She rules over an earth-based religion. She is mentioned in the House of Night Series as a beautiful, young Goddess that has a affinity for night.

She is regal, she is royal, she is every woman, she is you, she is me…she is strong in body mind and soul, she is timeless,...she is wise, she is free, this woman, “The Queen”... The Fourth in the series, her face is half turned to the viewer, looking away, conscious of her dignity, regal in her bearing, as if carved from the rarest wood... I have named you queen. / There are taller ones than you, taller. / There are purer ones than you, purer. / There are lovelier than you, lovelier. But you are the queen. When you go through the streets / no one recognizes you. / No one sees your crystal crown, no one looks / at the carpet of red gold / that you tread as you pass, / the nonexistent carpet. And when you appear / all the rivers sound / in my body, bells / shake the sky, / and a hymn fills the world. Only you and I, / only you and I, my love, / listen to it. / In my goal to portray women in all guises and emotions, here is the latetst addition to the collection..”The Temptation”....we all know what the feeling…temptation comes in many disguises…is she the temptress, or has she been tempted?make of her what you will… / When I was halfway through painting it, I remembered a picture I had seen in a magazine advertising lipstick….the model had her fingers on the open lips…. I thought they would be a perfect addititon to the painting, but I needed to see them again, just to be sure…. I frantically dug through my recycling bin (luckily we are having a garbage strike and everthing is still here) and found the picture…..the fingers were just what I needed…it was apparent that the picture had been buried in my subconscious, just waiting to emerge in this painting….I made the modifications to the image and here it is Acrylic and watercolour on Fabriano Paper.. FEATURED IN.. .. / CREATIVE CARDS / THE OUTSIDERS / THE DIVINE FEMININE / TOP TEN CHALLENGE WIN IN PAINTED LADIES THE Demon, in my chamber high, / This morning came to visit me, / And, thinking he would find some fault, / He whispered: “I would know of thee Among the many lovely things / That make the magic of her face, / Among the beauties, black and rose, / That make her body’s charm and grace, Which is most fair?” Thou didst reply / To the Abhorred, O soul of mine: / “No single beauty is the best / When she is all one flower divine. When all things charm me I ignore / Which one alone brings most delight; / She shines before me like the dawn, / And she consoles me like the night. The harmony is far too great, / That governs all her body fair, / For impotence to analyse / And say which note is sweetest there. O mystic metamorphosis! / My senses into one sense flow— / Her voice makes perfume when she speaks, / Her breath is music faint and low!” ..Baudelaire / The Quiet / The Plea / Le Maquillage / The Queen / The Masquerade / The Cameo
