Icon #2 Point Ormond I am doing a St Kilda/ Elwood icon series. / I wanted to get the Point Ormond beacon. But when I climbed up there last night I realised the base had recently been encased in concrete and it looks horrible. / So I wandered down to the beach and took a shot of the city from Elwood with the beacon in the top right hand corner. The pool table in this image is a social centerpiece at Laru Ni Hati salon, so I wanted to shoot a unique photo of this common and popular object. I wanted to capture the movement of the billiard balls, while at the same time get a decent portrait. I tried some time exposure shots with and without a flash, but wasn’t happy with the results. Then I thought that maybe using my flashlight along with a flash would get the look I was after. So I asked the model’s (Stuart) girlfriend to hold my small flash unit and fire it toward Stuart on my verbal signal, then she and I rolled the balls around the table and I followed their paths with my flashlight. I also shone some light on the balls in the foreground, and I outlined Stuart, who stood still for the entire exposure. I had the shutter set at 30 seconds.

Collaboration with the gorgeous Lee Burgess – taken at the same time as Momentary Lightness of Being Taken on Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park, just south of Sydney. Night time shot, taken in the backwaters of the River Murray, near Lyrup in the Riverland area of South Australia. Beautiful still night with mirror image reflections of the majestic dead river gums. BEST Viewed large. Canon 400D 18-55 lens. Processed in Photoshop CS3.

Collaboration with the brilliant Lee Burgess dancing on the cliff edge. The colour in the top cloud is the moon halo. The good news for this shot was that this lovely rockpool lined up beautifully with the moonpath. The bad news was that the rockpool was perched on the edge of a cliff and between the top of the pool and the edge of the cliff there was only an 8” sliver of rock for Lee to stand on. Plus it was blowing a gale (that blur at Lee’s back is her hair blowing in the wind and the chill factor was less than 10 degrees). All Lee had on was this strapless flimsy dress and she kept having to hop out of shot to put her coat and boots on to warm up. And then the idiot photographer would say things to her like “Can you do some rotating pirouettes?” and she had to remind him “You know I’m standing on the edge of a cliff here!” and then shed did them anyway!! It certainly helped that Lee used to be a gymnast but brave or what!! So who would like to volunteer to be my next model :-) Shot off the Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park, Sydney Australia. Rota Island is a natural playground with around 3000 inhabitants and is known by many to be Micronesia’s best-kept secret / Rota (Chamoru: Luta) also known as the “peaceful island”, is the southernmost island of the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and the second southernmost of the Marianas Archipelago. It lies approximately 40 miles north-northeast of the United States territory of Guam. Songsong village is the largest and most populated followed by Sinapalo village (Sinapalu). In 1521, the first European to see Rota, was the lookout on Magellan’s ship Victoria, Lope Navarro. However, Magellan’s Armada of three ships didn’t stop until they reached Guam, so the first European to arrive in Rota (in 1524), was Spanish navigator Juan Sebastian Elcano, who annexed it together with the rest of the Marianas Archipelago on behalf of the Crown of Spain. Located along the Marianas Trench which is the deepest known part of the world’s oceans, and the deepest location on the surface of the Earth’s crust. / The trench is about 2,550 kilometres (1,580 mi) long but has a mean width of only 69 kilometres (43 mi).
