RedBubble is very deliberately trying to cultivate a ‘play nice’ mentality. The reasoning behind this is that we want RedBubble to be an encouraging environment. As I wrote about a few days ago we think that everyone’s inherently creative and we want to foster an environment that draws out this creativity. And it’s working. We’ve received a number of e-mails from RedBubblers writing about how they have rediscovered their creative passion because of the interactions they have on RedBubble. Don’t underestimate the power of the positive comments you make! For those of you who want more than encouragement – fear not we have options for you – and there are more options to come. We have a critique forum that we’re encouraging people to use for constructive criticism. And we’re planning to build a ‘learning centre’ to help people to develop their creative skills. (Incidentally – the reason for separating out the critique forum from general comments on a work is that not everyone is ready for constructive criticism. We think exposure to criticism should be an opt in process – and must be quite carefully managed. Things can quickly get out of hand in interactions over the Internet – as we don’t have all the non-verbal cues that moderate our behaviour in face-to-face interactions. So criticism must be carefully managed). And finally, we think that creating a positive and encouraging environment in RedBubble doesn’t equate with accepting mediocrity or avoiding improvement. Rather we aim for RedBubble to be a place to encourage and inspire development. My first job after university was with the Army, where people would often be shouted into improvement – well let me just say that RedBubble is NOT like this! Everyone will develop / learn / change at their own pace – when they’re ready. As always – your comments and views are welcome … - Peter

Hey there, fellow RedBubblians… Once again I am browsing through hundreds of folios, numerous pictures, wonderful writings and great art… And over and over again I am thinking “How did they do that?” ... “What did they do to their cameras/pencils/papers/pens/canvas/lights/computers/add-form-of-art-here to get this effect?” ... “What the heck can I do to my own art to get better?” I love all your kind words on my photos, and pictures. In my very own portfolio, those are my best ones. Compared to your works I have seen, they are crap… I want to get better. I want to learn about lighting, ISO, Shutterspeeds, DOFs, etc. I want to know, what I can do with my pictures, in my situations when I shot them, to improve the effects, to get the pictures clearer, to just make them more beautiful and more on par with what I WANT them to be. / I can’t manage on my own. In thus, this is a plea to all RedBubblians out there, who can give advice and critique. When my pictures are really bad, tell me – but also tell me what I can do to make them better, so I can improve my works in themselves. / I do know, that some pictures, the quality itself is bad – the negative scans only are 72dpi on those that I shot with film. I couldn’t get bigger ones (the lab said, I don’t need bigger ones – I said I do, they said they won’t do it, since I am not a professional grinds teeth). I have a handful on there now, that I shot with a digicam as well. A friend of mine bought a new camera and gave me his Canon D10 to play around with. Good thing is, that all my Canon lenses fit on that one as well. / I won’t give up on film! I do like the excitement to wait for the results too much. But I also realize, in order to improve my film works, I need to improve my understanding. And with the trial and error, it is just cheaper using Digital (I spent a FORTUNE just for developing lately and the successrate to get nice pictures was horrible). But that’s just rambling. To get back to the point: Feel free to tear my pictures apart, tell me, what to do, what to change, how to snap, to snap better. Play Nice – Advice :c) Thanks all for reading and thanks even more for maybe even reacting. Best wishes from Vienna, Giovanna

Began with the sale I was notifed about at 12:30am :P Then went to bed. On my to work I got off at St. Andrews station, walked through the underground path which passes the Roy Thompson concert hall courtyard. The courtyard has this pool, and today look what I found there: This pool is very shallow; about 15cm deep perhaps. A few times this year I’ve seen ducks swimming in this pool, which was unusal enough, but baby duckings?! I wonder how they can get home, they would have to walk quite a distance away and cross some roads in order to reach the closest “natural” body of water! Luckily I had the camera on me; though I got it out pretty late; earlier they were more bunched up together. I arrive at work, got onto RB and replied to some comments. I check the status of my entry in the New Challenge. Initially, right after they starting taking votes, my work was ranked in the 50s, and in a few hours rose to the 20s. However the day after it dropped to the 130s! (I almost died…). It remained around there for a few days, but today it suddenly improved and now it is in the 60s. I’d feel safer if the challenge just closed now so I could keep it there; big drops can happen in a few hours :P Finally a new feature! Love Birds which I just uploaded last night, got featured in the Stillness Speaks group! I didn’t foresee that the moderator was going for a bird theme today; looks like I uploaded the right thing at the right time!
