What are we? / Atelier translated from the original French literally means workshop, in particular an artist’s workshop or studio. Our studio is anywhere, but it started in a garage and a back alley, and we’re inviting you in. We are a group of artists on Redbubble united not just by our geography, but our intent to create art in all forms that is provocative, exciting, stimulating and different. We’re throwing in our creative chips together and betting something interesting will happen. We share ideas, gear, wine and food. We are an antidote to the average and normal – a panacea to dull landscapes, cute pictures of puppies, kittens, and kiddies. We’re happy campers – not happy snappers. We want you to open your eyes as if for the first time. / We want you to feel estranged from the everyday. / We want you to dream lucidly and vividly. / We want you to feel naked and exposed. Firstly, many appy loggies for my relative absence from the bubble sphere recently. I’ve been working a retail management job that was a little bit nuts over Christmas, and am changing jobs yet again soon. Also the Back Alley Atelier exhibition has taken up a little bit of time. If you are in Melbourne please check it out and sign the guest book. One bubbler who did come all the way from the Blue Mountains NSW (not just for us, but still special) was gentleman, scholar and fine photographer “Andrew “The Boz Bosman . When he asked if I would like to show him the back alleys of Melbourne, I said “Sweet, I’ll round up some peeps, meet us under the clocks at Flinders St” (or words to that effect). So last Saturday we braved heat that only mad dogs and photographers would. Hien is one of those wedding photographers you tell all your engaged friends about. I know that one day when someone makes an honest woman out of me, I’ll be a-knocking at his door. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when he invited me to come along to a ‘Trash the Dress’ shoot and spread my creative vibes and help with art direction. And like I could pass up the chance to watch a couple of lovely normal individual’s run amok with paint and scissors? It all started off fairly normal and wedding like… Then we had a change of scenery… There was some pleading… But it was futile. The idea of getting covered in paint and ripping apart a perfectly good wedding dress was just too delicious to pass up :) Twas a big bunch of fun Hien. Thanks for inviting me along for the ride.

An engagement shoot I did with Fiona and Steve today at the RBG in Melbourne. Autumn colours combined with soft sunset light.. made for really lovely saturated colours and great lighting conditions. This is a short gig I did today for a local circus act of acrobatics/jugglers. They needed some images for advertising materials. First set of pics were shot using a SB800 to the right. Only have one flash available as I left my other PW at the last wedding I shot. 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10 / Then turned the flash off, jacked up the ISO, and did some jumping photos. This is the first time I’ve found a legitimate use for 9FPS in RAW. 11 / 12 / 13 / Fun shoot!!

This photograph was shot yesterday. Moments like these for me are rare – an old Tiger Moth plane and an old Buick car, combined with perfect, warm sunset lighting just after the rain that produced an amazing rainbow that eclipsed the whole airfield. I couldn’t ask for more, and was so excited to be able to shoot this. Location: Point Cook RAAF airbase. / Camera Equipment: Nikon D3 + 14-24mm

This turned out to be a wonderful wedding with a very unique backdrop and perfect lighting conditions that greatly favoured photography. We not only had a Tiger Moth plane as a backdrop, but also a warm sunset and rainbow as well – how lucky was that!? My second photographer for the day was Daniel, and he did a wonderful job in capturing the candid moments with a longer lens. Whilst in Perth to shoot Jess & Luke’s wedding (I’ll put it up sometime soon), I managed to fit three e-shoots while I was there – yes, it was a very busy week! The three couples; Kat & Marcus, Michelle & Bern and Jasmina & Darren were wonderful and we managed to get some great shots from a variety of locations around Perth. One of those rare photos (for me) when you don’t see any faces, yet there’s so much emotion depicted. I really love the lighting in this photo. I used pocketwizards to fire a remote flash on the left and the fiery background was because the reception was held in an underground cave. Pretty cool result eh!!

I photographed this wedding last Saturday of Erin & Mick. Caroline Gorka followed me around for the day, but unfortunately I haven’t had the time to look at her photos yet. I don’t usually edit photos this quickly for a wedding, but I’ve got to clear my backlog as I’m leaving for a wedding in Bali next week.. YAY! Anyway…Erin and Mick were a great couple, easy to get along with and very fun loving. I tried my best to bring these qualities in them out in the photos. The location of the wedding was the zoo, so we got to wander around the zoo all by ourselves for about 35min (yep, another rushed location shoot) before ending up at a really really lovely Japanese themed cherry blossom garden. We timed it right so that the lighting from the setting sun was intensely warm and you can see this in the images. These are just a few of the many photos I liked.. I really had trouble choosing them as there were so many nice ones. After the wedding at around midnight, we did a quick 1 hr walk around the city to Parliament House and Hosier Lane to mix up the photos a little.
