Taken from the top of Mt Ngauruhoe on a beautiful, clear, summer day with coast to coast views from Mt Egmont to Mt Taranaki.

An abstract representation of the two main features of the Tongariro National Park, Mt Tongariro (in the background) and Mt Ngauruhoe. The Tongariro Crossing, the most famous day walk in NZ, takes you between these awesome volcanoes where the power of nature overwhelms your senses.
This weatherbeaten tree managed to find life on the windswept ash and gravel covered slopes of the volcanic Central Plateau of the North Island of New Zealand (home of three awesome volcanoes; Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro). The moody clouds behind reflect the turbulent weather that rips through the area on the days when it’s not so postcard perfect in New Zealand .
The centrepiece of the New Zealand volcanic stage, often called The North Island Volcanic Plateau , are its main stars Mt Ruapehu on the right and the conical Mt Ngauruhoe. On this panorama they enjoy the late afternoon sunlight and a warm southern breeze that brought smells of the native forests to an amazed photographer.
All 3, Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe are all volcanoes. / Ruapehu erupted last year, Tongariro in 1977 and Ngauruhoe in 1975.
Ngauruhoe taken from The Desert Road
The view of the volcanic cone of Mt Ngauruhoe (used as Mt Doom in the Lord of the Rings Films) towering over Mt Tongariro’s South Crater. Shot on a Nikon D50 in the Tongariro National Park, New Zealand.

This Panoramic was particularly difficult to join as the light was changing very rapidly during the course of taking the pictures, I dont have any specific panorama software so I just use photoshop to join my panoramas which tends to be very time consuming.
About This Painting / Mount Ngauruhoe is one of three currently active volcanoes in New Zealand. Located on the Central North Island Plateau close to Mount Ruapehu, which had been the more active of the two over recent years, it frequently has steam issuing from its vent. This painting was mostly done in situ from the slopes of Mount Ruapehu on a battered piece of hardboard salvaged from under the Ski Club hut. The volcanic ash and overlying patches of golden tussock grass give an other-worldly feel to a landscape dominated by the two active volcanoes and the blown-out remnants of a third (Mount Tongariro) lying close by in the background of this painting. About This Painting / Tama Lakes are two volcanic lakes that lie alongside Mount Ngauruhoe on New Zealand’s Central North Island Plateau – a great wonderland with two active volcanoes and one huge blasted-out volcano remnant. This area of our country holds a huge fascination for me. I’d like to live closer to it – but then, we can’t live everywhere! Ah me !! This is a sketch that I’m about to tun into a paintig. Acrylic on paper.
