  • Synthetic polymer paint and newspaper collage on paper. From a series documenting friends who have died from HIV/AIDS related illnesses. Chris’s new glasses finally arrived, the day before he died. He could barely breath, each breath racked his body. The effort of reaching and shakily putting on his glasses seemed to take forever, and exhausted him. He turned his face to me – a skull on a skeleton with a tissue of skin scraped over it. “How do I look?” he asked.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to get yourself, your event or your work into your local paper The short article and photo below was featured in my local paper last January at the time I had a group exhibition running with some friends. It took me literally 10 minutes on a lunch break to accomplish. I’ve done this many times for other artists, events, myself, school things… Getting a bit of coverage in a local paper can have a huge impact on how many people turn up to your event, or sign up for your class, or look you up on the net. What’s more, it’s actually quite easy to achieve Start with some well taken, interesting photos of you, the event organiser, the people behind the work, and maybe one of the work itself. Have a think. What about this person or event or work is interesting, different, exciting, would make people read the article twice? (If there isn’t anything interesting to write, stop at this step, go outside and do something interesting first.) Jot down 1-5 sentences that capture the tone and uniqueness of the person or event and make sure you include important details like names, dates, and contact details. Check your spelling, and read it aloud to make sure it runs smoothly. Stop going over it 50 billion times. It really doesn’t matter that much if you use ‘a’ or ‘the’ Send it to your local paper, a blog owner, or a magazine and include 1-3 of the best photos. Three things could happen: 1. They’ll go “sweet, this guy just did my job for me” and will publish it as is / 2. Someone will call you wanting to chat or email or ask for other photos and will flesh it out into a longer article / 3. You’ll hear nothing, and it will disappear into the abyss This whole process can take as little as 10 minutes if you already have suitable photos, so set your alarm for a bit early tomorrow and get up and do it. What have you got to lose?

  • This tee, depicting homelessness in London, was designed for the This is London Calling challenge. “Hee-hee London – tee 2” was featured in the groups Unconventional Artistry and Made In Digital. / 645 views (9November 2009) London is the capital city of England and the UK. With a population of over 7 million, London is Europe’s largest and most densely populated city with 4,679 people per square km (Office of National Statistics 2002). The London region is made up of 32 London Boroughs and the Corporation of London. 17% of the UK’s unemployed people live in London. The rate of homelessness in London is twice as high as the rest of England with over 50,000 homeless households. According to the Communities and Local Government estimates in June 2003 about half of the people sleeping rough in England were in London. The main reasons for the high levels of homelessness in London are growth of the housing market and ongoing population increase in the capital. Although wages are generally higher in the capital, they are unable to keep up with rising house prices. The demand for housing is increasing and the supply of affordable housing is decreasing. The Mayor of London has introduced a London Plan which calls for half of new homes in London to be affordable, to help reduce the levels of homelessness in the capital. Source: Homeless London

  • ...just a Sunday Morning ‘reading the NY Times newspaper’ moment here…

  • As a teacher , seeing this boy peeking through the window into the classroom in Vietnam quite broke my heart. Sadly getting enough food for the family and harvesting the rice can be a much higher priority for some families than their children’s education. And who can blame them for that …

  • This piece was taken from a picture a friend took while visiting in Turkey. I saw the beautiful sunset and got such a feeling of warm, enduring friendship radiating off these men. I wondered if they had been meeting there for years, discussing politics or polices, each with their own voice, and respectful ears. It couldnt be lifted so she asked me to take some photos of them and I put this together for her. Its pretty big and when viewed in full all the articles can be easily read.

  • This photograph of an elderly gentleman – a total stranger – concentrating on his newspaper was shot outdoors on a misty Calcutta morning in October 2006. We were actually driving past when a friend – who was at the wheel – pointed out the old man reading his paper as he sat facing the street. I walked over, introduced myself and asked if he would mind if I took a couple of images. He smiled and nodded graciously. Because I favour an 18-125mm lens, I was able to take this shot without getting in his face, lilterally or metaphorically. There was a wonderful serenity about his expression and that is precisely what I’ve tried to convey here. He simply kept reading his newspaper and I shot two frames before I thanked him and returned to the car. It’s interesting to note – and I didn’t realise this at the time – that he is not wearing glasses. Which Sunday newspaper was it? I didn’t ask him, but it was a Bengali-language paper, so it could have been either the Ananda Bazar Patrika or the Amrita Bazar Patrika. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F6.7, 1/60 sec, ISO 800, focal length 108mm. India4 081
