Yet another update to the site this morning, with lots of great stuff… here’s the highlights: the activity monitor (in MyBubble) has had a major overhaul — the most recent events still appear on your overview page, but we’ve added a new “activity” tab, which let’s you go back through your entire history of events and filter the events so that you can see “just comments” or “just sales”, etc you can now choose to have a copyright watermark embedded on the larger previews of your images — to turn this on go to MyBubble > Account > Edit Profile all our FAQs are in the forums now we’ve changed our T-Shirt previews so that the artwork is a little higher on the tee, to better reflect what the finished product will look like we’ve tweaked some of our image processing so that the “zoom” view of most images will look a whole lot better I’m sure there’s more, but that’s probably enough for now. Enjoy!

”... for the times, they are a-changin’...” In With The New / It seems wholly appropriate to quote the masterful Bob Dylan for this, the latest edition of BubbleWRAP, because things are indeed changing. RedBubble is about creativity, inspiration and expression; about finding and re-igniting the secret passion you had when you were a child; about sharing your artistic endeavors and knowledge; about learning more and connecting with others; or simply being imaginative. Now, when RedBubble started out, we created BubbleWRAP as a way to connect our members and their stories – we would share with everyone what we found to be inspiring and noteworthy. Well now it’s time to turn the tables and hand over the reigns… that’s right – BubbleWRAP is now yours! We want YOU – the RedBubble Community – to drive the inspiration and creative content of BubbleWRAP. We want you to share with us everything that excites your inner child or anything that inspires your creative pursuits. They can be in any form that you find them, be it images or designs, stories or interviews, poetry or tshirts, quotes or collaborations – the list is endless. We want BubbleWRAP to become a showcase of your brilliance. This issue is the first attempt, so please support it and help us to improve the offering. Send any entries (such as image and tee reviews, member interviews or inspiring stories) to: / tom@redbubble.com Thanks must go to Sasufi, Evangeline, TBO & Danny for making this issue possible. Tom.

This is Rosalie, Sarah’s mum writing on Sarah’s behalf. Locals may have heard already on the news of the drowning of a 15mth old in the northwest of Sydney. This is Axel, Sarah and Glen’s little son. As you can imagine everyone is devestated. One never expects it to happen in your own family … Please feel free to leave messages here if you feel so moved – they are rather overwhelmed with calls and all the due processes right now but do appreciate the care that their friends are offering. Feel free to bubblemail me directly (RosalieDale) if you have any questions or any direct messages – I’ll check in a couple of times a day just to check for mail. Thank you all … / Rosalie

Well my photographic journey has been a little dormant in recent months – but I feel that’s all about to change (and take a new direction). Announcing the safe arrival of Emma Kate Styles – born on the weekend. I’m feeling very chuffed and have a renewed respect for all mothers.

I had done up a 40 page portfolio about 3 weeks ago and got it professionally printed by an online company. When my portfolio arrived I took it to a local shop in town and asked if they would be interested in any of my work for their shops. I left my portfolio with them and about a week later I recieved a phone call asking if I would be intersted in supplying the company with 72 coffee table style books and 50 or so matted prints to start. My jaw fell open and I nearly took a stroke where I stood. I still can’t believe it!!! I took a lot of work and persistence but things seem to be finally coming together. / Thankyou all so much, / / Kevin

Those who are members of the Former DPF Group will be saddened to hear that our friend YellowJacket (Paul) passed away early morning 9th October USA time. His wife Merlyne has requsted that I pass this news on to his ‘online family’. While we know he is now free of pain and with his Maker, as humans we will miss him and his wonderful sense of humour, his courage, and his encouragement. He touched so many lives. I admire him so much for rising above his disabilities and looking for ways to still make a difference. Till recently he was out photographing animals in the local shelter in order to maximise their opportunity of finding a home. I have expressed our love and support to his wife Merlyne, and said I would pass on any comments from his ‘online family’ in about a week’s time. So please feel free to add any expressions of sympathy and support to this Journal which you would like passed on to Paul’s family. I know Merlyne would also appreciate your prayers – she speaks of her unpreparedness to be alone. We celebrate Paul’s photography and life in the Former DPF Group overview with Features of his work, and Paul as our Featured Artist.

There is so much crazyfreakycool stuff happening around here at the moment anyone would think it was Christmas already. Actually anyone who has been into any shop since August would think it was Christmas already. Firstly, calling all t-shirt mentalists, do you want your clothes hung in a store next to Carnaby Street, London? Does Amy Winehouse need to go into hibernation? Of course, so go and check out this mentalist tee comp we just launched over here, you’ll be too excited to sit down. Secondly, anyone hanging around the t-shirt section in the last six months would have had to be clinically dead to have not noticed the infectious rise of one Natalie ‘I’ve got at least a million new challenges up my sleeve’ Tyler, who has more impact on the clothing world of RedBubble than the Earl of Sandwich had on convenience food. So without further ado I’d like to officially welcome her into the RedBubble fold. Good work Nat. She’ll be doing lots of community based bits and pieces and also some good healthy idea generating and marketing and probably a whole bunch of other stuff that she hasn’t bargained for at all. And while we’re on the subject on new staff, I’d like to introduce you to Rhana Griffin who you’ll probably have noticed around the place being super helpful and energetic, so super helpful in fact we thought we’d make it official, so now Rhana will be focusing on our customer service, a role she’s already been assisting admirably with, and has now made it a full time objective, nicely done. / / And finally, the sharp ones among you will have noticed that Nat is based in London, the sharper of you may have also noticed that a few months ago I moved my bombshell of a desk at the Melbourne RB office to that very same London, and it’s about now I’d like to stir up the interests of all of you who are perfectly capable of dealing with 362 days of rubbish weather, extraordinarily full trains and very expensive cornish pasties, and direct your attention here. The official home of RedBubble UK, where Nat and myself can keep you all abreast of future challenges, meet-ups and general English shenanigans, in the cold. That’s about all the excitement I can handle right now. / / Originally from here

Hi! to you all ! For all of you my friends that have been waiting to hear how things went today. I am so very excited about todays luncheon with the Executive Director of one of our most prestigious Retirement communities here in my city. I have been commissioned to provide all artwork for their buildings that are being renovated and updated. We are talking nothing smaller than 16×20 inch framed artwork but most 24×36 inch framed work and larger. Between 100 – 150 pieces of artwork needed. That is not the end then , there is more talk of my also providing artwork for the companies other 200 buildings across Canada. OMG ! I AM JUST VIBRATING WITH EXCITEMENT. MY BREAK HAS MANIFESTED . I’M THRILLED BEYOND WORDS. / Thank you all my friends for your wonderful support and encouragement. I’ve been not on much this past couple of months because I’ve been very busy with promoting my artwork in any way I could think of, and now it’s paying off big time. Now I will be crazy busy getting artwork printed and framed and still won’t have the time I did before, being on here.Well that’s my news . So if you are doing everything in your power to promote your work , don’t get discouraged . You never know who is watching you, and will call you up. Love & Hugs to you all , / Madeline / Maddy / SmudgeArt

If any Londoner had chosen to brave Saturday’s blistering 18’ and shuffled down to one of our more fashionable districts and into a certain Demo Store, they’d have had their awe neuron shattered as an immense wave of ‘excellence in t-shirt design’ overcame them. Yes, the winners of our most recent Sound tee competition have hit the shelves, to the delight of 12 million shoppers and considerably more pigeons. Let’s once again put our mouse down and our hands together for the clear champions Ine Spee, Cathie T, Scott Robinson, Nick Ford and DieselLaws. That’s enough words, show me those pictures…... This is the mannequin they’ll all eventually get displayed on. / Ine Spee’s Whistle Boy in the front window. / And I was just about to swear at these people for ‘being in the way’ when I realised they were photographing Ine Spee’s top in the window, so instead I gave them some chocolate. / Good work on all fronts, to Demo, to the winners, to everyone who entered, and to all of you for voting efforts. Bye

last month this buddy of mine i have known since i have moved here to knoxville told me about the local newsapaper’s photo contest and suggested i enter it. / of course i was leary about it, and decided what the heck why not. / so i entered three images of mine, not giving it much thought / a couple of weeks ago i recieve an email from one of the people from newspaper giving me a congrats!! i re-read that email a few times before it actually sunk in….lol it’s the knoxville news sentinal, the largest newspaper here in this area. / i won the amazon kindle 2 in the “spring scene photo contest 2009” / id never heard of the thing until they said i won it. so i looked it up on amazon. its basically a electronic book, you can check it out here ive been waiting to post something about it so i could link up to it, so far they havent added it to their website, it was published on the may 4th’s edition, and the editor sent me four copies of it :) so along with getting the kindle and seeing it in print..it Now feels Real! :):) / the winning image is a huge favorite of people on here also / it is a touch of yellow , a macro shot of two native plants in the great smoky mountains, the bellwort and the white trillium / i am truely hyped and honored to have won this contest, usually i just pass these things off, i guess now ill take them alittle more seriously! lol

It took several weeks of my blatant flirting before James realised I actually meant it in all those bubblemails about taking me on a date. In the end I just asked him out and thankfully he said yes. Jump forward to last weekend and it was his turn to do the asking, but the answer was still yes. / / / / .

Being a creative person is a bit like being a sponge. Part of maintaining an interest in art and creativity is to seek inspiration from things around us. It helps to keep that spark firing, even when we may not have the time to create art ourselves. / / It’s interesting to keep one eye on what’s making the news when it comes to art and design. You never know what kind of inspiration you might find in your newspaper or online. Here are some art related stories that have sparked our imaginations in the past week: Bansky versus Bristol Museum Banksy has unveiled his largest ever project: Bansky versus Bristol Museum, a full-scale infiltration and “remix” of Bristol City Museum and its works. Art’s leading lights head for Vauxhall car boot sale The annual Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair sees popular contemporary artists flogging their art out of car boots at bargain prices. It took place in London this weekend. When the Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair first opened for business five years ago, the notion that famous artists would ever really resort to peddling their wares from the back of a hatchback was a joke. Tim Burton to exhibit at the MoMA Tim Burton’s drawings, stories and puppets are the focus of a major show at Moma later this year. The show will include more than 700 pieces: paintings, drawings, storyboards, maquettes, puppets and other work created or designed by Burton. Artists say no to Google An invitation to put art on Google Chrome has caused grousing among illustrators, who don’t see why a profitable company like Google shouldn’t pay for their work. The Eames House turns 60 The Eames House in Pacific Palisades, California, is celebrating its 60th birthday. The ingenuity of the prefabricated structure dazzled architects and designers at the time, and still does today. NYC cabby transforms backseat into art studio Fabio Peralta has turned the back seat of his yellow cab into an art studio for his passengers, and has commissioned thousands of works. How cool is Fabio!? We hope some of these stories inspire. Please feel free to share your thoughts below or link to any other nuggets of inspiration from outside the bubble. Have you ever walked into the room to see your pet doing something outrageous? Was your child about to dump a plate of spaghettis on his sister’s head? You had your camera in hand but by the time you”got ready’ the shot was gone? How long does it take you to move the camera to your eye, compose, meter and shoot a photo? How long has it been since you read your cameras operators manual? As a working photojournalist I realized the value to being ready for that one great shot at any time. So let’s get you prepared to quick draw and shoot your one great shot. First let’s decide what’s your norma stylel, do you shoot often in program mode or manually adjust the camera for every photo? Do you typically shoot at a wide angle or telephoto? Whatever you do normally, you must return your camera to your normal comfort zone immediately after taking any other type of photo. So that when you pick up the camera you know what EI it’s set to, what focal length you’re using etc. You should always know every setting your camera is adjusted to at all times. With that knowledge comes confidence that you can grab a quick shot. Always be ready to shoot. Can you operate your camera blindfolded? On an assignment to illustrate a story about a young man who was out saving stray animals I walked into this scene. / / By being ready to shoot I got a grab shot of “Sparring cats.” I usually shoot with two cameras one a body on a long telephoto with monopod and the other with a wide angle on my right side. This way I’m prepared for distant and close in activity. / My wide angle camera is always carried inverted, that is with the prism next to me and the base of the camera pointing away. This allows my right hand to always fall into place with my finger on the shutter release as I move the camera upward. With my 14mm lens I can begin shooting long before looking trough the viewfinder. When shooting sports I keep this camera on my chest so I can grab shots of the players as they run into me. In the days of films popularity we gauged everything by Kodak’s ASA 400 Tri-X film. We had slogans to remind us “125th and f8” was the rule, when finished with any photo you returned your camera to 1/125sec and the lens to f8. And then you were ready for “f8 and be there”. If you stepped outside and it was really bright you could feel the camera as you went to 1/250sec and f11 for outdoors. And when you walked into a store or commercial building you would open up to 1/60sec and f4. In most homes we would expect to shoot around 1/30sec and f2.8. And if we got a great shot but then discovered the light wasn’t as expected we would push or pull the film during development to get the shot. Knowing and understanding exposure is the first step in getting an image you can work with. Always being prepared is the next step. On my first day at a new newspaper job I was out riding around town, before my shift, when police cars began screaming past. I kept up and pulled in to a shopping center in time to see several police officers shooting at a car speeding past them. Right in front of me two police cars crashed into the speeding Cadillac, I grabbed my cameras, rushed past several officers and 15 seconds later shot this image. / You probably won’t be shooting spot news photos so how can we put this to work for you? Let’s go for a walk down a nature trail. Do you want to have your wide angle lens on the camera? We might use a wide angle to photograph the landscape or a nearby flower; these subjects don’t run away so you’ll have plenty of time for them. But that deer you spooked will soon maybe the telephoto lens should stay in place while walking down a trail Another thing to do, if you use program or auto settings, is to frequently aim your camera at a scene along the trail and depress the shutter release halfway. This will focus the lens and pre set the shutter speed and aperture. This may reduce the time required to adjust your camera for the next shot. So why don’t you think what you have to do to take a photo. Thinks like a NASCAR pit crew changing tires. What steps can I avoid taking? What preparations can I make in advance? These steps will help you in your everyday shooting also. When you are confident in your equipment you can concentrate on the image. / Have fun happy shooting-Larry

The day I added my first image to RedBubble, some lovely people took a moment out of their lives to comment and tell me how much they liked it. They could see past my blurry focus and amateur composition and found something genuine and kind to say. When I realised that the whole community was like this, so giving of their praise and thoughts, I was instantly hooked. Before long, commenting back and forth turned into conversation, and conversations into friendships. We saw each other every day on RedBubble, we shared similar passions, and we all wanted to surround ourselves with creativity and be inspired. RedBubble was the fertile soil in which to grow relationships with other artists and creative people. Exhibitions, meet ups, holidays away together, creative successes – there have been far too many good times to comment on them all here. But I will mention just one. As happens in all good romance novels, I fell in love. I might sell 50 framed prints tomorrow, but nothing is going to beat that! A few weeks ago James proposed and this Sunday we are getting married. It’s going to be a small gathering of family and sprinkling of friends, overlooking the ocean. Then, we’re off to Italy for a month to take as many photographs as our several external hard drives can handle. Today is my last day in the office before all the festivities begin, so if I don’t answer your bubblemail, it’s because I’m sipping espresso on a terrace in Venice. Arrivederci!

There are times in our lives where we all feel like we’re not producing enough work or nurturing our creativity. It’s easy to reach a point where you feel as though you haven’t been creative for ages. Today I’d to share a little tool that has helped me avoid that feeling, even when I’m too snowed under to even contemplate spending time on a project. It’s called a feed reader (otherwise known as a software based aggregator or RSS reader). A feed reader allows you to read updates from multiple blogs and websites in one place, and saves visiting all your favourite blogs on a regular basis. It’s a useful tool for keeping up to date with news an information on the topics that you’re passionate about including art, design, photography and writing. It can serve as a great learning tool and source of ideas and inspiration … a bit like having a daily newspaper written just for you. Here’s a peek at just a few of the many (currently over 60) blogs I keep an eye on: / / / / / / Setting up a feed reader is quite simple. There are many web based feed readers including Google Reader, Bloglines and Netvibes. All you need to do is sign up for an account then add the feeds you’d like to follow. Each time you sign into you feed reader, you’ll have a list of recent posts on your chosen topics. For those who are interested in finding out more, these links should help: Which Feed Reader is best? Web Based Aggregators How News Aggregators and RSS Readers Work RSS explained And if you’re interested in finding some creative content, these lists are a good start: Top 20 (or so) Art Blogs 160 t-shirt blogs Bloglines most followed blogs The Top 100 Photography Blogs Best art and design blogs of 2009 Top 10 Blogs for Writers Top 100 Creative Writing Blogs This is how I make sure I get my daily dose of creativity outside of the bubble. How do you stay inspired and motivated when you don’t have time to create? We’d also like to hear about the creative blogs you follow … Nat
