These two little babes are brand new; they hatched only one day ago. Mother Cardinal spends most of the time in the nest, keeping them warm, while Father Cardinal makes visits to the nest with grub worms and all sorts of goodies for the ravenous chicks. One of the three eggs didn’t hatch so that means more food for this healthy pair. Any sign of activity at the nest and these two pop up with bills wide open, anticipation quivering in every molecule of their tiny bodies. I’d like to dedicate this image to Kimberly Palmer who wanted a peek at these two after I mentioned they had hatched.

Another shot of the little blue tit from yesterday.I think the perfect blue sky adds a simple but brilliant backdrop.

I’ve been watching Mama Chickadee very closely and noticed she was delivering worms and such to the nesting box. A quick peek inside and sure enough, the eggs have hatched and I see five baby birds. (Only four bills are evident here but trust me; there are at least five little ones in the nest.) There were six eggs so I’m not sure if baby number six is hiding behind his sibllings or if egg number six just didn’t hatch.

The lone baby cardinal in the nest is growing by leaps and bounds. I’ve named the little mite Teensy and watch everyday as Dad and Mom take such good care of their pride and joy. Unfortunately, Teensy’s sibling is no longer in the nest; I don’t know if predators got it, if it fell out, if it just died from weakness, or what. I don’t want to go and look inside the nest as Teensy is very sensitive and fearful at this stage. Teensy is a little over a week old. This is a very precarious time for Teensy; I’m hoping and praying all will go well with this tiny bird’s life as only about one-third of nestings end successfully.

I was shocked to see Teensy standing at the edge of the nest this morning while Mom and Daddy Cardinal clicked and chinked encouragingly to their little one. After a treat from Dad and more clicks and chinks from Mom, Teensy spread tiny wings and took flight to a neighboring rosebush. I will miss seeing the family interacting in their nest in the rosebush near my bedroom window, but I feel blessed beyond words to have been given the opportunity to watch Teensy’s life unfold from egg to hatchling to fledgling. Maybe I’ll spot Teensy later at the feeders! I’ll be sure to keep you posted and thank you for viewing my series of Life with the Cardinals.

Father Cardinal is the doting dad, visiting the nest frequently with worms for this growing chick. It’s a heartwarming spectacle to watch, a gift I feel has been given to me by God. Thanks to Maria Dryfhout for suggesting this title. I am adding this version of the original upload, “Father and Child”, because I realized the first one was too warm-toned and worked a bit on color balance here. I think this one is more accurate color-wise. Thanks to those who commented on the first image which has been removed.

My love is like a red red rose that's newly sprung in June . . .
by Bonnie Taylor BarryUS$4.28–US$114.00
O my luve is like a red, red rose / That’s newly sprung in June; / O my luve’s like the melodie / That’s sweetly played in tune. / As fair art thou, my bonny lass, / So deep in luve am I; / And I will luve thee still, my dear, / Till a’ the seas gang dry. / Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, / And the rocks melt wi’ the sun; / I will luve thee still, my dear, / While the sands o’ life shall run. / And fare thee weel, my only love, / And fare thee weel, awhile! / And I will come again, my love / Tho’ it were ten thousand mile. Scottish poet Robert Burns penned these lines in 1794 and they still resonate today all these centuries later. This particular little rose is a Louis Philippe, an antique rose I bought from a nursery in New Orleans years ago. “A China rose from 1834, the flowers are double, deep crimson with a touch of blush at the center and like all old Chinas exhibit an occasional white streak through the petals.” (Information from Antique Rose Emporium website; Brenham, Texas).
