This is an IR shot taken at my favourite location on the Hunter River in Hexam, Newcastle, NSW, Oz.
This is an IR shot of Nobby’s Beach in Newcastle, Australia. / / I’m keen to see how many connotations you can all come up with. / / This is the beach where the Pasha Bulker came ashore in a huge storm we had earlier in the year. / / / / / / / / / /
loved the reflections from these, it was so still and i thought this looked good, i think i’m having a river day !!!!!!

I found this really great tree today. It looked as though it would fall over if it was leant on too hard, the branches were bare and the bark was peeling off everywhere. I thought this angle might do it justice. Camera: FujiFilm FinePix S7000 / Location: Valentine, Newcastle, Oz. / Date: 20-02-2008 @ 2:59PM ISO200 / f/8 / Focal Length: 7.8mm / Exposure: 2.5sec / Filter: R72 (infrared) / Tripod at a really strange angle. / / /
Original photograph taken at the Kooragang Wetland Centre in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. I duplicated the base layer, applied a couple of filters to those copies, added a few tinting layers, and adjusted the layer modes to change look of the piece.
Another in my series of shots of the Newcastle Baths, the adjoining canoe pool and surrounding beaches. Today the weather was windy but sunny and so the ocean gave off the most beautiful blue colouring. This shot is similar to my previous one however you will note the canoe pool has water in this one and the pool covers a more total area of the photo. Always a challenge and always a spot to keep going back to. This shot was taken with the Nikon D80 using the 55-200 mm lens on landscape setting. / / ALSO IN THIS SERIES /
Newcastle Harbour by night
Golden Waters. A magical golden sunset over Lake Macquarie [ Australia ] in Autumn of 2008. The heavy clouds made it look like a vision from Heaven or another world.
Pasha Bulker just a few days after she grounded on Nobbys Beach, Newcastle. It was sheer luck that found me there so early, and sheer luck that placed that bird in the foreground. A few moments later, the ship was completely occluded by the fog. Taken with a now elderly Olympus C760-UZ compact. Its still a darn good camera. And, I guess this is the one shot of which I am really proud, and which is what made me decide to pursue photography much more enthusiastically.
Looking out over Lake Macquarie as the sun goes down. Photomatix (Tone Compression) / Canon 350D / Tonkina 11-16
695 views as of 28th November 2009 This image was taken just after the first I posted and you can now see the ship a little clearer but still silhouetted against the fast rising sun. We all stood in awe watching this scene and wondering what this ship would look like as it then disappeared behind Nobby’s Lighthouse and reappeared on the other side of the breakwall before coming into harbour … wait for more!! / / /
An uncharacteristically normal shot for me, not a bit of peeling paint or broken window in sight! Taken on a recent wander along the river, this is Newcastle / Gateshead’s Millennium Bridge, known locally to a lot as the blinking eye bridge. The entire structure rotates through 40 degrees when pushed by the three hydraulic rams at each edge, lifting the coloured archway you see here and the walkway slung from it high into the air to allow ships to pass underneath.
Two yachts race up the mouth of the Hunter River into Newcastle Harbour, New South Wales. The image was captured with a 6 MP Sony Cyber-Shot and then processed in Paint Shop Pro. I duplicated the original layer and applied a number of filters to it to make it resemble an impressionist painting. I then tweaked the tones to highlight certain parts of the scene.
Ok…so I played with the colours just a bit…lol
The view from a rocky beach, looking back down the Hunter River in New South Wales. The image was captured with a 6 MP Sony Cyber-Shot.
Canon450D / ISO100 / f/9 / 8sec / ND400 / Sturdy Tripod / Shutter release / Wet back – an unexpected rush of water sprayed up from behind me…luckily I was leaning over my camera and managed to stop most of the water from hitting it – but the wet clothes made for a cold shoot….but my shoes remained dry ;0) Newcastle Beach, NSW, Australia. / 18th June, 2009 @ 9:56AM
“Mathew Reed’s series of works reflects on the long history of man and his deep spiritual bond with a companion animal. He touches on various religions and cultures as he expresses a spiritual connection with the protective otherworldly silhouette of a wolf. His centre piece work, Spiritual Quest, was heavily influenced by the traditions of native tribes in North America who would embark on vision quests to discover their place in their tribe. On these quests, the child would have a dream where their spirit guardian would come to them in the form of an animal. Mathew touches on this tradition while adding his own flavour, looking inside himself, walking one way with his guardian while considering the branching path leading in another direction.” Apart of Animal Logic, a Newcastle exhibition. 10% of the sales of any of the original works went towards a donation to Blackbutt Nature Reserve to assist in their eucalyptus plantations to create a better habitat for their Koalas. July 1st – July 24th. Charcoal and gesso on canvas / Approx. 46×65cm / SOLD
I took my little IR cam with me on the trip. One of the rare stops we did allowed me to capture this view from Fort Scratchley. Canon powershot pro1 IR, f/3.5, 1/320”, ISO 50, hand held OTHER SHOTS FROM THE ROADTRIP BEACH SHOTS / REAL ESTATE SERIES / NEW ZEALAND / LENSBABY / INFRARED / LANDSCAPES
Lake Macquarie in New South Wales on a fine Winters Day in 2009. Image edited in The Gimp using custom textures and a filter effect.
A spectacular Winter sunset over Swansea Channel as twilight looms. Swansea is situated in Lake Macquarie on the East Coast of Australia. It’s a very popular spot for people who love the water – excellent for fishing, sailing, boating, swimming, and paddling. It also has a lot of great surf spots close to Swansea Heads. / Featured in – ImageWriting group on Wednesday 5/8/2009 Newcastle NSW, Lake Macquarie & Surrounding Region group on Sunday 9/8/2009 Going Coastal on Wednesday 12/8/2009 Thank you to all the Moderators of these groups ! :-)
This series of steps leads up from The Side towards a gated wall. This area of Newcastle near the river, was part of the original crossing point and lead up in to the upper parts of the city. It is now also famous for the Side Gallery , a little gem of both a building and photographic gallery. The wear of the steps bear witness that the remains of houses and business that once thrived here, once had happier days. Converted in to black and white
