  • Bogey Hole – a convict built swimming hole / Newcastle NSW Australia

  • The Bogey Hole was constructed by order of Commandant Morisset in about 1820 for his own personal use and was originally known as the “Commandant’s Baths”. Morisset was Commandant of Newcastle from 1819 to 1822. The name “Bogey Hole” was applied afterwards and comes from the Aboriginal word meaning “to bathe”.

  • This is a bit different from my usual stuff…..but change is good…..for a little while, anyway. / / This shot is actually a mistake – thought I had zoomed out when infact I hadn’t and at first glance I assumed I had missed what I was aiming for….this is what I found when I put my images on the computer….I like it. / / I haven’t done a thing to it – this is the 100% original file…. / / / / / / / / /

  • This is an IR shot of Nobby’s Beach in Newcastle, Australia. / / I’m keen to see how many connotations you can all come up with. / / This is the beach where the Pasha Bulker came ashore in a huge storm we had earlier in the year. / / / / / / / / / /

  • Bar Beach / Newcastle NSW Australia

  • I was down at Newcastle Beach this morning because I woke up to see a big swell pumping through Merewether but it just wasn’t performing.. so I decided to explore other parts of Newcastle which I’ve never bothered to photograph before. I was set up with my 500mm lens to get some surfing photographs, but due to the salty mist (making it difficult to see and focus) and my low placement (couldnt really see the wave if a wave had just broken in front of it), it wasn’t ideal for any decent surfing photographs. There were only a few decent waves coming through anyway which were actually being ridden, some were a bit too fat or shutting down too soon. So I swivled my gigantic lens around to see these guys waiting patiently to jump off the rocks into the surf. With the low sun, it created some beautiful back lighting perfect for silhouettes.

  • I often get questions about the pump house and the diving blocks at Merewether Beach so I found out a bit of info….. 1935 / At a cost of 2,600 pounds, Merewether Ocean Baths, acclaimed as the ‘largest of their kind in the State’ opened as part of the Merewether Golden Jubilee celebrations in November. There was a procession in fancy dress from the Council chambers to the baths. Considered ‘the greatest advertisement for Merewether as a residential suburb’, the new baths had been built further seaward and a little to the south of the older Merewether baths on the same rock platform. At 110 yards by 90 yards, they were ‘big enough to hold the larger swimming events’ and separated into a main pool and a children’s pool by a wide promenade. The main pool nearest the sea was 110 yards long and 55 yards wide, while the shore portion was 110 yards long and 35 yards wide. The 3,500 pounds for relief work on the baths had been paid by the NSW government. Excavation of the baths promised to yield 6,000 to 7,000 cubic yards of stone valued at 2,500 pounds. Merewether Council was seeking a further government loan to cover the construction of dressing-sheds at the baths. The new baths became central to the life of the community and prompted more people from the Lower Hunter district to visit Merewether. • Rather big seas this afternoon. Canon 450D / ISO400 / f/22 / Exposure 2.5sec / Focal Length: 18mm / Filters: ND4 (Canon) / Gradient Tobacco / Gradient Grey / Tripod / Wet pants up to my knees and as a result bloody cold feet.

  • I got really wet for this one. I really should wait for warmer weather to do these sort of shots!

  • Another in my series of shots of the Newcastle Baths, the adjoining canoe pool and surrounding beaches. Today the weather was windy but sunny and so the ocean gave off the most beautiful blue colouring. This shot is similar to my previous one however you will note the canoe pool has water in this one and the pool covers a more total area of the photo. Always a challenge and always a spot to keep going back to. This shot was taken with the Nikon D80 using the 55-200 mm lens on landscape setting. / / ALSO IN THIS SERIES /

  • I liked the colour in this one. Taken on the Sony A200 again. Too much sea spray to take out the Canon.

  • Another from this mornings sunrise.

  • Taken from inside Newcastle Canoe Pool at Newcastle Beach, Australia at 6:20AM.

  • Sunrise at Dudley Beach. Definitely go large to see this one.

  • Two yachts race up the mouth of the Hunter River into Newcastle Harbour, New South Wales. The image was captured with a 6 MP Sony Cyber-Shot and then processed in Paint Shop Pro. I duplicated the original layer and applied a number of filters to it to make it resemble an impressionist painting. I then tweaked the tones to highlight certain parts of the scene.

  • A little wave crashes into the rocks at Shark Alley, Newcastle Beach. I liked the textures and natural forms of the rocks and the beach was looking so clean and perfect on one of the first days of Winter. Image As Is, straight from a 6 MP Sony Cyber-Shot. F-stop: f/5.6 / Exposure time: 1/800 sec. / ISO speed: ISO-80 / Exposure bias: -1 step / Focal length: 5mm / Daylight Setting, No Flash.

  • Newcastle Harbour, Australia. A photo manipulation that tries to capture the magical essence and mood of witnessing yachts racing down a river, headed for the ocean.

  • Looking though some of my old images I found a complete list of the Images I took of the Pasha Bulka. Not long after taking these images I had a hard drive failure and I though I had lost all of the photos taken that day. About 5 months ago I found a CD that had about 6 images on it but only JPG versions. Still They were processed and they have turned out to be some of my more popular images. During a clean up of the computer room I discovered a CD with ALL of the images. This image I have not seen since I took it and I was very supprised at the quality of the image. Also on theat CD are some images I took of Somersby Falls the morning after that huge June storm. I will process a few of those as well. / Image taken with a Nikon D70 using the 70-300mm lens Featured in Central Coast and Huter / Featured in Going Coastal / Featured in Colour and Light / Featured in Style! • A body board rider races across the face of a wave as it breaks inside the entrance to Newcastle Harbour. If you live near the coast and are physically fit enough, you should try riding a body board if you have never done it. You would be amazed at how much fun it is to fly along, pushed by a wave with your face so close to the water the whole time ! To turn, you push down on one side of the board [ the ” inner rail ”, closest to the face of the wave ] while pulling the ” outer rail ” [ closest to the trough or flat water ] up firmly. When you reach the top of the wave [ called the ” Lip ” ] or anywhere else you turned towards, you push on the opposite sides to the ones that took you there. You can go anywhere on the wave – it’s all up to you and your skill, creativity and determination. They give you an exciting ride in waves of any size and but they can also be ridden in the largest waves on the planet ! • A Para-Glider really enjoying himself as he swoops out towards the sea at Dixon Park in New South Wales, Australia. A digital photograph captured with a 6 MP Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S500. F-stop: f/5.6 / Exposure time: 1/2000 sec. / ISO speed: ISO-80 / Exposure bias: -1.7 step / Focal length: 5mm

  • A Para-Glider enjoying the adrenaline rush of flying on the breeze at Dixon Park in New South Wales, Australia. A digital photograph captured with a 6 MP Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S500 and edited in Photoshop Elements 7 where textures and effects filters were applied. The original photograph of the glider is much more light-filled than this edit.
