Horseshoe Bay – Bermagui The 10th Bermagui Seaside Fair was held on Saturday 10 March 2007 and what a spectacular event it turned out to be. Thousands of locals from the region were proud as punch to partake and witness a fun-filled day of activities. Festivities commenced on the main wharf at the Bermagui Boat Harbour at 8am with the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony. Bishop Allan Ewing conducted the blessing and also addressed the gathering of locals regarding their continued dedication in making the annual festival a continued success. During the ceremony, the dapper dressed gentlemen from the Bermagui Probus Club Men’s Choir sang hymns, and other local singers and musicians performed. The majority of events were conducted at the Dickinson Oval precinct and a large crowd attended. Bermagui Seaside Fair announcer, June Tarlinton, said “They estimate there will be around 10,000 people and judging from what I’m seeing, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are fairly close to the mark.” “The street parade is extremely popular,” said June when referring to the amount of participants and spectators. “The Bega Vintage Car Club has forty cars involved this year and they’ve never had this many ever. The way the cars have been restored is awesome.” As part of the fair each year the Bermagui Citizen of the Year is announced. This year’s recipient of the award was Candy Craine, who was recognised for her tireless work in caring for sick and injured native animals on her property. June Tarlinton said “Candi Craine was nominated by persons within the community and she was a very worthy recipient of the award.” “She has put a lot of effort into rehabilitating animals since the loss of her husband.” Candi is also an avid photographer and she exhibited many of her quality wildlife photographs at the photographic exhibition at the Bermagui Country Club during the Seaside Fair. Celebrity entertainers, Frankie J Holden and Michelle Pettigrove, were invited to perform and compere the Bermagui Idols competition. The competition catered for local talent and the performers came out in droves to strut their stuff on stage for the gathered throng. Winner of the Bermagui Idol primary school age section was the highly talented nine-year-old Sophie Halliday, who performed a cover version of the song Who Knew by Pink. Judging for the competition was carried out in a novel way, and this was done by gauging the level of audience applause when each contestant’s name was announced. When Sophie’s name was announced, the applause and screaming was deafening. You could have come to the conclusion that her family in attendance numbered 500. She was undoubtedly the star of this year’s Bermagui Idol competition. Young local band, Overdrive, belted out a few tunes for the large and receptive crowd. The street parade, sponsored by Australian regional and rural broadband internet provider, activ8me, was a roaring success as it made its way along the spectator-lined one kilometre stretch of Lamont Street. The Batemans Bay Soldiers Club Pipe Band lead the colourful parade which included floats representing local schools, various community groups, the Bega Vintage Car Club, SES and Rural Fire Service, Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club members, Bermagui CWA and street performers. Novelty events were conducted for kids, and kids at heart, with the Chuck-A-Tuna competition proving more than a handful for participants. A little bending of the rules by some was detected, however it all added to the fun and frivolity of the afternoon. Local Aboriginal dance group, Gulaga Dancers, were in attendance and performed traditional style dances for the crowd. Carnival rides, a spectacular fireworks display in the evening over Horseshoe Bay, and a sandcastle competition were also part of the day’s festivities. Dozens of stalls were erected on Dickinson Oval with stallholders exhibiting and selling local produce and products, advertising local and regional services and businesses, and supplying food and beverages for the masses. On Endeavour Point Headland, Sculpture on the Edge featured sculptures by Alan Watt, Richard Moffatt, Michael Le Grand and the provocative Melbourne sculptor Greg Taylor. Bermagui, approximate population 1120, is situated in the gorgeous Sapphire Coast region of New South Wales and is renowned as one of the best, if not the best, places for marlin fishing in Australia. It’s also home to a fishing fleet, and is close to Montague Island which hosts numerous animal species. Other local attractions in Bermagui are the scenic Horseshoe Bay, the Bermagui Boat Harbour where you can witness the unloading of the catch of the day, and the Bermagui Blue Pool. The historic Bermagui Beach Hotel exhibits fishing memorabilia in the main bar, lounge and dining areas. It’s also a top spot for a soothing ale or lemonade. Meals are hearty and excellent value for money. High quality accommodation at affordable rates is available at the Bermagui Beach Hotel and the ultra modern Harbourview Motel. Bermagui is a friendly and scenic seaside town located 378 kilometres south of Sydney, Australia. Put it on your list of must see places – it’s a gem. Autumn is an ideal time to travel leisurely by car in eastern Australia with temperatures being mild and the days generally calm. Recently had the pleasure of a 2300 kilometre road trip to capture autumn images in Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. Having never embarked on a specific autumn photographic journey before, it was an experience that I’d like to highly recommend to Australians and visitors to Australia. Most visitors to Australia follow the well-worn coastal routes, but to see the best of autumn in Australia, you generally need to travel inland for the amazing colours, scenery and magical light that exists during April/May. Trust you enjoy this small sample of autumn images taken in Australia during late April and early May 2008. The upcoming 51st Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts will be held Thursday 5th June to Monday 9th June, 2008. Some good news on a personal level is that my image Dog Rocks has been judged the Best Photograph Of The Exhibition in the photography competition. The award to be presented is a bronze statuette which has been sculptured by Michael Mandelc, and it depicts Henry Lawson’s “The Drover’s Wife”. Dog Rocks also won the Open Colour section of the competition. I’ve been kindly invited by Tim Wood, coordinator of the photography competition, to attend the Awards Dinner at Grenfell on Saturday 7 June, 2008 6:30PM to receive the award. There is a distinct connection with Redbubble regarding this achievement. Hop Dac, RB staff member, posted a topic in the main forum informing members of this competition. It was there I became aware of the competition, and I thank Hop for doing so. Upon deciding to enter, I ordered six Redbubble matted prints specifically for the competition. I wrote a journal regarding the quality of the matted prints on April 19, 2008 and it can be found here. I’m pleased to say that Redbubble and its community have played a significant role regarding this achievement and I highly value the continued encouragement given by Peter Styles, Redbubble staff and Redbubble members. The achievement is dedicated to my mate Joe Mortelliti, for it was because of him that Dog Rocks was photographed on August 25, 2007. Special thanks to my family for their continued support. Folks, enjoy your creative pursuits here at Redbubble and beyond. Cheers, / Darren. Had the pleasure of photographing the 2008 Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts Street Procession on June 7, 2008 and thought I’d share a small sample of the images I took. Also like to extend my gratitude to the following people who made me feel welcome during my visit: Jenny Smith – Festival President / Amy and Tim Wood – Festival Photography Competition Co-Ordinators / Carol and Noel Jones – Grenfell Motel Owner/Operators / Julie and Geoff Grattan – Grenfell Camera Club / Noelene and Lisa Davies – Grenfell Camera Club / Jan and Arthur Davidson – Grenfell Camera Club / Colin Walsh – Grenfell Record Photographer / Peter Soley – Grenfell Record Editor / Gaynor England – Festival Short Story and Verse Co-Ordinator There’s many others I met during the festival, however I’m unable to recall all the names – my apology. I had a great time visiting and experiencing the festival, and being a small part of it made it extra special. Cheers, / Darren. Took a drive to Corowa, NSW, Australia last weekend to check out the water level of the Murray River. We spent two nights there. It’s not really a river at the moment – more like a shallow stream you could wade across. Official data from the New South Wales Government NSW Water Information website indicates that the water level at Corowa on September 30, 2007 was 1.2 metres. The water level recorded on August 30, 2008 was 0.35 metres. The height of the river fluctuates during the year according to rainfall and discharge from Hume Dam, and during December ‘07 at Corowa it was recorded at 2.3 metres. http://www.waterinfo.nsw.gov.au/ © Darren Stones 2008.

During December 2008, I had the pleasure to visit Candelo in New South Wales, Australia, and met some beaut people whilst there. Candelo is a small rural community reliant on farming. Dairy is prominent in the area with farmers supplying the Bega cooperative. The town is also reliant on attracting visitors to their monthly community market and people come from hundreds of kilometres away to sell and buy produce and bric-a-brac. / L-R Bronwyn Galofaro and Nobby McMahon Nobby McMahon (Candelo community market vendor) invited me twice during the morning to join he and the locals at the Candelo pub. Of course I was happy to oblige, especially given the small and large hands were soon to join in unison at 12. / L-R Bobby O’Brien, Nobby McMahon & Kevin Slater During my visit, I met Kevin Slater and his wife Joyce in the Candelo Hotel. They, and their family, were celebrating Kevin’s 75th birthday. I did mention to Kevin if he’d checked if the pub had a fire extinguisher, given Kevin’s birthday cake had more than 21 candles. / Kevin and family Whilst having a yarn and a couple of refreshments with the locals, Kevin approached me. He whispered in my ear and asked if I could photograph he and his wife. I obliged, happily. / Kevin and Joyce Slater Kevin is a local icon – this I was told by the locals. He’s been involved in most community-related activities in the Candelo district. Over the years, he’s won prizes at the Sydney Easter Show for exhibiting his cattle. Just before Christmas 2008, I posted some photographs to Kevin and Joyce with a brief letter thanking them for inviting me to join in their celebration. And to think none of this was planned – it was just part of my travels. This morning (14/1/2009), the postie knocked at the door to deliver the mail. Amongst it, a gift card featuring a painting of the main street of Candelo. Kevin and Joyce have written in the card, and I’d like to share their words. 7/1/2009 Tantawanglo / Candelo Darren and your wife, Hope you had a merry xmas and 2009 is good to you both. Thank you for the photos. Candelo markets on Sunday 4/1/2009 were the biggest in years. Good weather and plenty of tourists. Nobby had his stall but had plenty of opposition with fruit and vegie stalls. It has dried off here again – not as good as when you were here. We had xmas at home with family – 44 on Sat 27th. We hope to get to Merimbula for a week late summer. When you come again, give us a bell and we might meet for lunch or something. We enjoyed your company and interest in little Candelo Regards, / Kevin & Joyce Slater To Kevin and Joyce Slater, and the other fine folk at Candelo, I say “thank you”.

It’s extremely rare for me to write about a feature at RB, but when it happens on the RB Home Page that’s pretty neat. :) / Evening Glow – Narrandera This photo was taken in 2007 whilst travelling north along the Newell Highway between Jerilderie and Narrandera in New South Wales, Australia. Bronwyn and I were desperately scouting the landscape late in the day looking for a definite feature to photograph during the golden hour. We were both pretty knackered by this stage of the day because we’d been working our butts off all day long. We work pretty good as a team when travelling – she’s patient and keeps an eye out for something of interest. Importantly, she helps with my gear and helps me get over some barbed wire fences. To date, there’s been no accidents, if you know what I mean. ;) So, this RB Home Page feature is dedicated to Bronwyn, who helped me over a barbed wire fence in my pursuit to make this photograph. Thanks to RB for choosing this image for the Home Page. :)
