A nice long exposure I did of the Opera House from the Northern Boardwalks at dawn yesterday. This has come straight off the filter; no post-processing.

This was taken on the walkway that leads from the Overseas terminal in Sydney to the Harbour Bridge. I was really attracted to the quality of the light – on the right old restored warehouses, now converted into restaurants and an old church that looks so warm with its light on sandstone. By contrast on the left side are mainly new building – lots of glass and blue light. / The reflection on the water was very intense – this is almost as it is in the camera. Just a little tweeking of the levels in Photoshop Elements. / Taken at f/16, shutterspeed 40secs at 400 ISO – on my new tripod, using my new cable release – oh so many possabilities open up now. / Great night out shooting – my first proper night shoot – with a class I have been taking. I know – in my portfolio are night shots taken in Cambodia – amazing what one can do with a rock and a book!

/ . / The Queen Victoria Building, also known as the QVB, was designed by George McRae and completed in 1898, replacing the original Sydney markets on the site. As recently as 1959 the Queen Victoria Building was threatened with demolition. As it stands now, in all its glory, it is testimony to the original vision for the building and the superb craftsmanship of the artisans who put it all back together again.
While on a trip to Sydney I set out to capture a night shot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Using the panoramic camera enabled me to capture both icons within the same shot. One of the most difficult aspects was capturing the shot without any passing boats which would leave long streaks of lights through the image. Using a long exposure of around 2 minutes I was able to capture the city lights and their colourful reflections across Sydney Harbour.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge contributes to the beauty of night views around Sydney Cove in New South Wales, Australia. Luna Park, a fairground, provides much of the reflected light in this photograph. It is located beyond the bridge on the northern coastline of Sydney Harbour at Milson’s Point.

It is not an alien invasion, not a frame from a sci-fi movie, but a living and breathing city, almost real and shockingly impressive. When I was standing there on the dark lane I heard the sounds of an invisible heart beating, breathing of an old building, saw the skin pulsing on a worn brick wall. It has really created an impression of an old organism being alive, calmly living there and serving humans for as long as it is required. What would it think about everything around it? Does it get irritated by the unpleasant smell or loud partygoers on Fridays? I Dwell In The City And The City Dwells In Me is a public artwork by Kim Bridgland, Adrian Hill, Aline Joyce and Theresa Schubert. It is a part of a Laneways By George – Hidden Networks project. The exhibition consists of 8 creative works transforming hidden lanes and little streets in the Sydney centre. Installations are on display from 1 October 2009 until the 31 of January 2010. 3 RAW shots on a tripod combined into a HDR, tonemapped and post-processed. More than two centuries ago this place was named Sting Ray Harbour by Captain James Cook who just landed here in New Holland and caught few sting rays after a Sunday fishing trip. Renamed to Botany Bay later it is now a place of the major port in Australia, Port Botany. A number of berths for container ships and bulk liquid carriers allows for handling of around 10 million tons of various imports and exports in a year. 10 mil. tonnes that’s about 256 Sydney Harbour Bridges exported. If you are still wondering why did I say New Holland, that was the name of the continent at the time. Common for 180 years it was changed to Australia in 1824. For this picture I made a number of photographs from the tripod with different exposures and a hope that it might merge into a HDR. However, as there were many moving subjects (e.g. ship, water) it proved to be more rewarding to use the single RAW and tonemap it lightly. Numerous lights around the port created thick yellow tone on everything, so I have to reduce the color cast a bit and also enhance the contrast of some areas.
