The most powerful computing and the applications that sit on it are taking us back to the past. I am particularly thinking about the emergence of micro-audiences and how this is very similar to what existed prior to the advent of mass communication. Before Edison invented the phonograph, people created the music they listened to and shared it with people they knew. In a similar way, most decorative arts were produced and shared locally. If you wanted to decorate your mantelpiece you had better start whittling away. Being creative in this pre-industrial world was something you did rather than something you bought. Strangely, this is re-emerging. The Internet is re-enabling micro-communities, but based on interest rather than geography. Singers and artists can create for small audiences from all over the world. This is part of a larger trend. Slow food is challenging industrialized fast food. The craft movement is resisting mass production. Bloggers are taking on mass media and TV is losing out to online video. I cannot help but feel this is a good thing. It feels to me like us reclaiming part of our humanity that we should never have let go. Martin (aka Pilgrim)

Hello hello! We’ve just rolled out this weeks release, the highlights include: A real credit card system / You can now pay for stuff with a credit card without having to use PayPal—you can do it all without leaving RedBubble. Previously, this was only available as an option for orders in Australian dollars. PayPal is still an option, of course. Clear GIFs over the larger images / By popular demand! If you really want to discourage people from downloading the larger versions of your images, there’s an option in your profile to do so. Please understand it’s impossible to prevent downloading of images displayed on web pages (they can still do a screen capture, for example), but activitating this feature will make it more difficult. Interesting nerdy sidenote: GIF is pronounced “JIFF”. The pre-loading images experiment / After the main art & clothing gallery pages load, we’re pre-loading the images for the next page in the background, so that when you click “next” the page should load much faster for most people. It’s an experiment, but it seems to be working really well so far. The activity footer experiment / In another experiment, we’re putting the two most recent activity events down above the footer. The theory is that users might accidentally discover new stuff that they may not have found any other way, and we’ll see how that goes. Featured and recent work in the group home pages / We’re showing two rows of both now, instead of one or the other. Also / There’s the usual bug fixes, tweaks, etc. We know we’re a little behind on launching of new groups that have been proposed—please be patient! Enjoy! — Justin & Co

Whew! That was a long downtime, sorry for taking so long… Hello Bubbleologists! I’m pleased to announce that we’ve just rolled out our weekly(-ish) release which contains many wonderful things, including… Featuring Work and People in Groups, Redesign, etc We’re mid-way through some redesign and re-structuring of groups. One of the things we were really keen to release was hosts featuring work from their group. It’s a mixture of art/writing/clothing (to keep things simple) and as hosts start featuring work in your groups, the group home pages will start showing the featured work. This led to a mini-redesign of the group navigation, page layouts, etc. We’re not done, but we think it’s a great start. Hosts: Start featuring work from your group, and we’ll probably post some more info in the hosts forum soon. Search Redesign The search screens have been redesigned to make them a bit easier to use, and a bit better for search engines to index your lovely content. VAT As announced a little way back, we’re now charging VAT on all orders being shipped to addresses in the UK. Those pesky bought/sold things We’ve removed the “bought work” and “sold work” things off everyone’s profile. They caused a whole lot of extra load on the servers, so the simplest thing to do was remove them. But if you guys really miss them, we’ll find a way to bring them back without crushing the servers—let us know what you think. More Red Dots We’ve started handing out a few more of those little red dots to people in the community, recognizing their contribution as volunteers. The first to be “dotted” are Colin Tobin and Imogene Munday, but we have a few more on the list to contact over the next few days, including kseriphn, Martin Pot, Anne van Alkemade, Kathleen, Damien Mason and Faizan Qureshi. Thank you! Etc That’s about it this week, with the usual bug fixes and miscellany. For those of you wondering if you just missed an entire day of your life, no, we’re just releasing on Wednesday instead of Thursday this week because of a public holiday in Melbourne soon. Also, check out Stiched 9.9 from the Ministry of T-Shirts too! — Justin on behalf of many other people

Welcome to Thursday everyone, only a couple of minor changes to the site this week. The new look homepage is starting to take shape, it’s not done yet, but we couldn’t wait. A whole bunch of minor mybubble account features, you can hide your suburb and country if you want to, you can sniff delete your own account (as if you want to) plus heaps of little things to help us ! Kinda a slow week, but that’s because we are working on our next super secret big project in the thought bubble. .... (Hint, first letter G)

Hello all! I’m constantly inspired by the people I meet via RedBubble. There are so many interesting and inspirational people involved in RedBubble … and I’d like to help get more of our stories out. As one way of doing this I’ve started (today) a series of ‘artist profiles’. The guidelines for these profiles are very broad. People involved in RedBubble write about other people involved in RedBubble. The profiles should be short (500 words) and interesting. The first profile is on the wonderfully talented Tom Godfrey So if there’s someone on RedBubble who inspires you – and you’d like to write a short piece on them please get in touch with Peter.

Today’s product release provides two main features: • A new gallery page which allows multiple ways of seeing works (by recency, by product type and by popularity). You can expect to see further evolution of the gallery to provide ways of featuring the full range of works on RedBubble / / • A capacity to report inappropriate comments made on your works (you will see a link next to comments on your art) We will be turning on forums in the next 24 hours. They will be steadily populated over the coming week. There is also substantial behind the scene work in preparation for allowing international purchasing to take place. Enjoy …

Well kiddies, they called my bluff and gave me a job. So today I trundled myself over to fitzroy for my first day with the bubble elves. Having worked managing an art gallery this last year, it is so awesome to now work for you wonderful artists and focus on making our cool little community and groups even better. Here’s the rough Job Description Now I have an excuse to be on here close to 24 hours a day (what’s new!). / Can’t wait to get stuck into it Jo jobrien@redbubble.com

Hello! Well another Thursday and another release … this release was all about t-shirts. We’ve shifted all production to the US and we’re using a new t-shirt printing technology. This technology can print white ink – which makes designs work on dark coloured t-shirts. We’ve also introduced more colours and an XXL size. Ed has written more here. We’ve also updated the layout of the ‘work view’ so that it’s clearer that folks can buy things and so that the comment box is closer to the work (to make commenting easier). The next release is all about groups … we’re adding forums to groups and making the administration of groups much smoother (and there’s a few other group goodies that we’ll keep as a surprise). Happy bubbling! Peter

More new stuff for you, and a few hints on what’s on the way soon… 1. Change the order of your art and designs! And check out the stats on how many views, comments, favourites and sales each has received. 2. The Portfolio in MyBubble has been split into Art and Clothing sections. This is a precursor to giving art, writing, and clothing their own separate public areas. 3. “Journal entries” have been renamed blogs. We are working towards separating out “written work” (e.g. poems, stories, articles) from blogs, which should make a big difference to all you writers! 4. The old “people” page has been upgraded to community . Find out what’s happening on RedBubble, see which work is popular right now, meet featured people, and get involved in activities and competitions. Phew! It’s been a big week, but there is plenty more on the way soon…

Cards Cards Cards / The big news this week is the launch of Greeting Cards – Nearly any image can be sold as a greeting card on RedBubble, any file of about 1Mpix or larger ! The product itself is beautiful, photographically printed, bonded with high grade paper and folded. Here’s what it looks like – Just click the card icon at the top. / / Please make your work avaliable as cards – RedBubble is all about artists choice, you need to tick the box to sell cards. / / / Updates to the Watermarks / So we pushed these out a few weeks ago and had a heap of feedback from confused buyers, not sure if the watermark would be on the final product. / / In response we’ve changed the way we are doing this. There isn’t a water mark on the smaller image so buyers can see it clean, on the larger image we are still displaying the watermark – we’ve tried to make it subtle and explain it a little better while still protecting your images.

Hello! So this morning we released another update to RedBubble. The first incarnation of groups has gone out. We see groups as a very important step in the evolution of RedBubble. We’re a collection of some 15,000 members at the moment – all with different interests and importantly wanting different things from RedBubble. Groups will start to allow people to engage with RedBubble in a way that’s more specific to their interests. For example, I can see us having a landscape photography group, a digital art group, a Boston writers group et cetera. Pilgrim will post some more information about groups later today and you can see this FAQ for more information. We’ve also released an activity monitor e-mail – this e-mail provides a summary of events in your activity monitor, and you can configure your settings to receive this e-mail daily, weekly or never. You can edit the e-mail settings in mybubble->account->edit your profile. At this stage we’re looking to send out the first activity monitor e-mail on Monday. We’ve introduced a featured tab in art and clothing – this featured tab is hand populated (currently by Peter) and aims to give people another way to engage with the work on RedBubble (with a bit of a bias towards new RedBubblers). We’d like to involve more of the community in populating the featured gallery – so if your interested in curating please send Peter a BubbleMail. Our ‘preview’ suffix is no more. The preview suffix was there to let you all know that we’re brand new – so please go easy on us! Now we’re not so brand new (six months old). But still please go easy on us! We’ve got a long, long list of things to build and improve. We’re open to feedback (and act on the feedback) but things often take a while to build/change. What else … the Google Maps feature in profiles has been removed … and there’s a bunch of boring bug fixes and back end stuff that’s been released. Ciao for now, Peter

”... for the times, they are a-changin’...” In With The New / It seems wholly appropriate to quote the masterful Bob Dylan for this, the latest edition of BubbleWRAP, because things are indeed changing. RedBubble is about creativity, inspiration and expression; about finding and re-igniting the secret passion you had when you were a child; about sharing your artistic endeavors and knowledge; about learning more and connecting with others; or simply being imaginative. Now, when RedBubble started out, we created BubbleWRAP as a way to connect our members and their stories – we would share with everyone what we found to be inspiring and noteworthy. Well now it’s time to turn the tables and hand over the reigns… that’s right – BubbleWRAP is now yours! We want YOU – the RedBubble Community – to drive the inspiration and creative content of BubbleWRAP. We want you to share with us everything that excites your inner child or anything that inspires your creative pursuits. They can be in any form that you find them, be it images or designs, stories or interviews, poetry or tshirts, quotes or collaborations – the list is endless. We want BubbleWRAP to become a showcase of your brilliance. This issue is the first attempt, so please support it and help us to improve the offering. Send any entries (such as image and tee reviews, member interviews or inspiring stories) to: / tom@redbubble.com Thanks must go to Sasufi, Evangeline, TBO & Danny for making this issue possible. Tom.

Admin Dave was so excited after yesterday receiving his first black Tee he had to stop deconstructing perfectly good Mac notebooks (see chair), and we ended up with a real case of life (poorly) imitating art. We couldn’t get him to take the sunglasses off, in fact no-one has ever seen his eyes, we’re not sure if they are like the mechanical, evil red ones from the Terminator, or a lovely baby blue. Modelled here is the wonderful black version of ‘Wound-Up’ by Scott Robinson AKA Resisto . - John

The new release is primarily about forums. You will find them here and also linked to from a slightly redesigned people page. We see forums as a platform for: / • Getting help and advice / • Discussion on technical and marketing issues / • Promoting events (both in and outside RedBubble) / • Providing feedback to RedBubble about what we should be doing / • Discussion on matters of general (or controversial) interest / • Getting feedback on your work. It is up to the community to decide what topics are raised in the forums and what direction they take. We ask that you continue to respect each other’s feelings and to foster positive debate (while not being anemic or being afraid of being controversial). Also in this release, international purchasers can now buy and there have been a large number of bug fixes (hopefully we got to yours!).

Another update of the site has just gone out today, the new stuff includes: RSS/Atom Feeds – One of the most requested features, you can now subscribe to journals, and portfolios … this will appear in more places across the site over time. Just click the little subscribe links and add the feeds to your favourite reader. Colour T-Shirt previews – Now you can see the colours before you buy. Colour Profiling – We are more profile aware, images should look ‘more right’ today for all new uploads. Next and Prev links – Not new, but we have moved them to stay in the same place – Just nice ! More goodies on the way soon ! Update: We have also removed logos from the laminated and mounted prints at the communitys urging. Keep telling us what you want folks and we will do our best !

Some more goodness fresh from the workshop here at RedBubble: 1. Buy artwork in any of 3.5 major currencies (US$, Euro, GBP, A$) / 2. Get paid in your home currency as above (inferred from your location, but changeable anywhere you see a price) / 3. Better zoom view for t-shirts (ooh the color, the detail) / 4. Engine tweaking for extra speed / 5. Various other bits and pieces a few people have asked for

Yet another update to the site this morning, with lots of great stuff… here’s the highlights: the activity monitor (in MyBubble) has had a major overhaul — the most recent events still appear on your overview page, but we’ve added a new “activity” tab, which let’s you go back through your entire history of events and filter the events so that you can see “just comments” or “just sales”, etc you can now choose to have a copyright watermark embedded on the larger previews of your images — to turn this on go to MyBubble > Account > Edit Profile all our FAQs are in the forums now we’ve changed our T-Shirt previews so that the artwork is a little higher on the tee, to better reflect what the finished product will look like we’ve tweaked some of our image processing so that the “zoom” view of most images will look a whole lot better I’m sure there’s more, but that’s probably enough for now. Enjoy!

Art, Clothing and Writing So there’s good news, and bad news … Lets start with the bad – Over the last few weeks we have been working madly to break up the site into three major sections – Art, Clothing and Writing. We want to value and allow focus on each of these areas separately… Writing is ‘this’ close to being done, but it wasn’t quite right so we had to hold it back and polish it up a bit more… BUT you can look forward to a whole section of the site where written work is treated the same way as any other artwork with things like separate descriptions and excerpts etc. The good news … Art and Clothing are here – The T-Shirt previews in the galleries and zoom views acutally ‘zoom’ in on the artwork, no matter how big or small, so everyone should have a much better idea how hot some of these designs really are. And … One more thing … If you’re into T’s then you can’t miss Issue one of Stitched Comming Soon Writing, updates to ranking and some more special goodies.

So, changes are afoot in the bubble, for those of you who haven’t had your coffee yet you’ll find that you can now sort by Greetings Cards in the Gallery, easing your task of hunting down some fantastic looking images to send to your Gran. You’ll also notice that prices are no longer rounded up, this is a small step in the direction of international currencies, yes, I’ll say it again, international currencies. Isn’t that the most exciting thing you’ve heard today? We’ve also done some major, major reworking under the bonnet, all of which should help in your daily travels around the bubble, smoothing your journey so to speak. Enjoy.

A couple of small changes were made to the site this morning. You can now elect to receive your funds transfers via a PayPal account (to change your payments settings go to mybubble->account->edit your payment details). And you can now choose what colour your t-shirt designs appear on the site. To change the default t-shirt colour go to mybubble->portfolio and click on the t-shirt design. Down the bottom of the screen you’ll see all the colour options and a new option called ‘preferred style’.
