High on windswept ridges in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in eastern California’s White Mountains live the planet’s oldest known living organisms – the ancient Bristlecone Pines (Pinus longaeva). Some of these trees were already growing when the Egyptians built the pyramids over 4000 years ago. The oldest known Bristlecone Pine is “Methuselah”. This gnarled and twisted tree is about 4,800 years old – and still able to reproduce. But only a few bristlecones have been able to grow to such incredibly old ages, survived ultraviolet rays, extreme cold, wind, and aridity in this harsh environment between the Eastern Sierra Nevada and Death Valley in an elevation between 10,000 and 11,000 feet (3,048 and 3,354 meters) above sea level. Upper Yosemite Fall as seen from across one of the meadows in early spring. Yosemite National Park, California, is perhaps the world’s best known example of a glacier-carved canyon. Yosemite’s giant waterfalls, towering cliffs, rounded domes, and massive monoliths make it a natural marvel and one of the most visited places on Earth. Yosemite National Park is located in California’s Eastern Sierras. It is comprised of Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne Meadows, Glacier Point, and other high country wilderness areas. One of the main attractions of Yosemite are its majestic waterfalls. The main falls are Yosemite, Bridalveil, Vernal, Nevada, and Illilouette. The best time to visit the falls is in May since the water is gushing. Bridalveil usually has a neat rainbow in the afternoon.

Our wild horses are at the center of tremendous controversy, as the government agency whose purpose is to protect the herds, announced that they have run out of funds for maintaining more than 33,000 captive horses—and one “solution” was mass “euthanasia”. Recently, the BLM proposed eliminating eleven wild horse areas from the Ely, NV District. All 620 horses in this area would be permanently removed from their natural environment, purportedly blamed for “environmental damage”. Weird as it was, it only rained at the Ghost Town and was Beautiful and sunny when we left. After shooting the Ghost town 2 days later I broke out with Poison Oak. and of course there was the voice of an elderly Man I heard in one of the worn down sheds (Nobody around for at least 30 Yards).

In late fall, golden aspens and white shoots surround June Lake, California. Located in the Eastern Sierras along Highway 395, June Lake is one of four main lakes just north of Mammoth. Other lakes along the loop are Gull Lake, Silver Lake and Grant Lake.

June Lake is located north of Mammoth and is well known for its fishing each year and spectacular colors each fall season. Highway 158 is a scenic drive and passes by four lakes which are all very nice to photograph: June Lake, Gull Lake, Silver Lake and Grant Lake. This photograph was taken near Boulder Lookout. Many of the cottonwoods and aspens will change colors into bright orange, yellow, and pink-red and mix nicely with all the pine trees. The Sierra Nevada Mountain range shows nicely in the background.

This was my first attempt at long exposure star trails while backpacking through the Eastern Sierra Nevadas. Davis is one of my favorite lakes in the Sierras to photograph, even dispite the MILLIONS of misquitos that inhabit the many meadow ponds around the area. I was covered from head to toe except my hands to take pics, and ended up with almost 20 bites on each hand. f/3.5 10 mins ISO 200 ........ / All images are © Nolan Nitschke. With a rim elevation between 8,000 to 9,100 feet, summer days are pleasant (80’s) and nights are cool (40’s). Afternoon thundershowers are common during mid to late summer, mornings bessing. Spring and Fall weather is highly variable with days of snow or days with strong sun and 70 degrees. Cold winter days are offset by high altitude sun and dry climate. /

Convict Lake is located along Highway 395 in the Eastern High Sierra just southeast of Mammoth Lakes, and due west of Crowley Lake nestled right up against Mount Morrison. The Lake has a similar appearance to Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada in that the water has a greenish tint surrounded by a mountain range. This one photograph was taken using super high contrast film with a polarizing filter to bring out the colors of the water. One of the many things to do around the lake is hike up into the John Muir Wilderness, fish on the lake and paddleboating. The lake was named after an incident in 1871, where a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City. A posse, led by Sheriff Robert Morrison, encountered the convicts near the head of what is now Convict Creek. Morrison was killed in the encounter, and Mount Morrison was named after him.
