Empty road in the middle of the desert, Eastern Sierra Mountains, California
In Great Basin National Park in Nevada you can take a short hike to these pine trees. We got there as the sun set and time was short, but I liked this one.
This was my first attempt at long exposure star trails while backpacking through the Eastern Sierra Nevadas. Davis is one of my favorite lakes in the Sierras to photograph, even dispite the MILLIONS of misquitos that inhabit the many meadow ponds around the area. I was covered from head to toe except my hands to take pics, and ended up with almost 20 bites on each hand. f/3.5 10 mins ISO 200 ........ / All images are © Nolan Nitschke. Sierra Nevada Rock, as this rock feature is called. Point Nepean N.P..Vic~Aus. / Sun heading for the horizon and some decent looking clouds providing some nice reflections in the rock pool…thanks for looking…rgs, Rob.
With a rim elevation between 8,000 to 9,100 feet, summer days are pleasant (80’s) and nights are cool (40’s). Afternoon thundershowers are common during mid to late summer, mornings bessing. Spring and Fall weather is highly variable with days of snow or days with strong sun and 70 degrees. Cold winter days are offset by high altitude sun and dry climate. /
A truelly amazing petroglyph made by the Paiute Indians native to the Owens Valley. These glyphs are carved into very hard volcanic rock. Some say these are representations of the shamans hallucinogenic journeys. All content & images are © Nolan Nitschke. You may not use any images in any way without written consent from artist. Upper Yosemite Fall as seen from across one of the meadows in early spring. Yosemite National Park, California, is perhaps the world’s best known example of a glacier-carved canyon. Yosemite’s giant waterfalls, towering cliffs, rounded domes, and massive monoliths make it a natural marvel and one of the most visited places on Earth. Yosemite National Park is located in California’s Eastern Sierras. It is comprised of Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne Meadows, Glacier Point, and other high country wilderness areas. One of the main attractions of Yosemite are its majestic waterfalls. The main falls are Yosemite, Bridalveil, Vernal, Nevada, and Illilouette. The best time to visit the falls is in May since the water is gushing. Bridalveil usually has a neat rainbow in the afternoon.
High on windswept ridges in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in eastern California’s White Mountains live the planet’s oldest known living organisms – the ancient Bristlecone Pines (Pinus longaeva). Some of these trees were already growing when the Egyptians built the pyramids over 4000 years ago. The oldest known Bristlecone Pine is “Methuselah”. This gnarled and twisted tree is about 4,800 years old – and still able to reproduce. But only a few bristlecones have been able to grow to such incredibly old ages, survived ultraviolet rays, extreme cold, wind, and aridity in this harsh environment between the Eastern Sierra Nevada and Death Valley in an elevation between 10,000 and 11,000 feet (3,048 and 3,354 meters) above sea level. These old trees, the oldest living things on earth, 2800 years older than Christ, are now strictly protected by law and guarded carefully. “Thank you for being a friend” Card / Laminated Print / Please note: RedBubble automatically re-sharpens and adds contrast to uploaded images for web display. ... but for how long? Our wild horses are at the center of tremendous controversy, as the government agency whose purpose is to protect the herds, announced that they have run out of funds for maintaining more than 33,000 captive horses—and one “solution” was mass “euthanasia”. Recently, the BLM proposed eliminating eleven wild horse areas from the Ely, NV District. All 620 horses in this area would be permanently removed from their natural environment, purportedly blamed for “environmental damage”. Blessed spirits always land high above our troubles. “Pray the Lord a struggle starts inside you for a soul matures in battlefield only.” (Thomas Merton “The wisdom of the desert”) This is dedicated to my dear friend Pol along with my best wishes. The capture has been taken on East Humboldt Range in northeastern Nevada. Enjoy!
Nevada City is an amazing place, but you have to be there early to get the place to yourself ! We got lucky, it was ‘off’ season and consequently very quiet , combined with a beautiful morning. / There were so many things to photograph, you could spend a whole lot of time there, but we were headed for Yellowstone, so time was limited sadly. Along with Bodie, California, this is a place I would happily return to time and time again …....... if only !! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, polarising filter attached, and mounted on a tripod. Canon 18-55mm kit lens / f22, 1/10 sec, underexposed by half a stop, iso 100. Cloudy WB. / I processed a single RAW file in Photomatix, HDR. Then processed in Adobe Camera RAW, then Ortoned it in PS CS3, adjusting Curves/levels, selective colour, etc., plus a bit of dodging and burning. / FEATURED IN / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/your-magic-places / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/dslr-users-only-3-a-day / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/rebel-group / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/happy-haven / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/unlimited-quality
