I was having an interesting conversation with my photographer friend Ian the other day. He was comparing my work to his. In his words, his photos were more “documentary” or “factual” while mine were more “artistic” and “poetic”. I was quite flattered by the comparison as I have always wanted to convey emotion and narrative through my pictures. But it raised a question in my mind as to how we convey emotion and narrative through our pictures. How much is it in the composition, how much in the titling and presentation and how much is actually in the mind of the viewer? How can you convey emotion through a composition? I think much relates to the state of mind of the individual taking the picture. Certainly when I’m in a happy mood I will notice positive things – on a basic level, the beauty of the world around. When I’m in a negative mood, I will be taking pictures of negative things, or things with negative associations – that seems to be chains for me. And in those images I am trying to convey feelings of being trapped, confined, restricted by life and a desire to be free. Positive images for me are the wide vistas of the countryside, wildlife running free, that sort of thing. I try to convey that sense of freedom and liberty, joy and life. I don’t know whether I succeed. Go and decide for yourself I’ve come to realize that titling is equally important. A good title leads the viewer to what you want them to see. Some days I’m afraid I’m rather lazy – but if you want to convey a sense of a lion running free through the African veldt you don’t call your picture “Lion”. I keep promising myself that I must spend more time considering a title, but in the fast moving world of the internet I’m afraid that expedience often wins in the desperation to keep a high profile. And then there’s the great unknown, the one thing that as an artist you are unable to control: the viewer. At its best, the viewer approaches the picture in the same frame of mind as the artist. At these times there is almost a spark – the viewer “gets” it. They can look at the picture and see through to its heart. I wonder whether much of the fuss over modern art is simply a case of the viewers inability to be on the same wavelength as the artist. Or the artist presenting a concept that is too esoteric. So does that mean I have to approach my pictures with a viewer in mind? Or can I be utterly self-indulgent. Well, therein lies the difference between an amateur and a professional. The professional always has to make his or her own feelings subservient to those of the buying public. In some respects they have to limit their imaginations – rather like a photographer wanting to express himself artistically, but being restrained by the fact that the happy couple just want bog standard wedding pics. The amateur is much better off in that respect. We have no professional considerations, we can let our imaginations and feelings run riot through our art. We have no audience other than friends and family. We are free.

Hi everyone, I’ve been reading some blogs, and admiring people’s art/photography/tshirts, and thoroughly enjoying the whole RB experience. As addictive as it is! What I would like to know is what is it that people want to achieve by uploading their work on RB? Is it purely sales? Is it the touchy feely positive comments? Is it the notoriety of being a featured artist on the home page? I’ll tell you why I’m here – I get a buzz from seeing my images on this website. Simple as that. I look at a lot of people’s images, and try my hardest to meet the same standards they have achieved. Sometimes, the equipment they use, and the techniques they employ are listed – so i can see what I’m up against. At the moment, I’m using my 10 year old son’s compact digital camera and photshop to fix up the shortfalls. (My 19 year old Canon SLR is in dire need of a service/overhaul, so I’m saving up for a new camera – but nothing fancy, as this is a hobby – remember, I dabble…) In my mind I can see what I would like to create, but it quite often doesn’t work that way. What I also thought RB was about, was about people giving constructive feedback. All I’ve seen is nice, positive comments – which is great, too. I haven’t seen anyting that I would classify as negative or nasty or derogative. I have come across the odd woeful image, and am astounded at some comments that people leave on these images, and wonder whether they’re taking the piss out of that person, or whether I’m really missing the point altogether… So, this is how it is for me…If you come across one of my images, please bear in mind the following: 1. I’m using a Canon A450 compact camera that I fight over with my son. 2. I do use photoshop, and have no idea what I’m doing until I hit the buttons. I have not training in photoshop or any other digital program. 3. I am NOT an artist, this is purely and simply a hobby of mine that I have enjoyed on and off for over 20 years. I do not aspire to be an artist, and would never put myself in the same category as many of the talented artists on RB. RB please note: maybe there should be a separate section for the likes of me, so that potential clients of the true artists who rely on RB sales for their income don’t come across images of the more amatuer RB’er, and therefore they won’t be put off buying art. 4. I love taking photos of anything and everything. I have no formal training in photography – except if you count 1 term of beginner’s photography that i did almost 13 years ago. It was 1 night a week for 2 hours, and no, nothing sunk in – I still get muddled up over all the terminology. 5. I invite you to browse my images and comment on those you feel you’d like to. Whether those comments mean you leave positive feedback, or some of your constructive criticisms, I will leave that up to you. I won’t be offended at the comments you leave. Just bear in mind the above 4 points when commenting. 6. The reason I have many of my images available for sale (even though this is only a hobby – and it will always be that way), is simply that my firneds and I may buy them. Some have already been bought, and all have been pleased with their purchase – the quality of the cards is exceptional. So there you are, I’ve been stewing over this for several days, and I’ve finally committed typed word to screen. I have opened up why I’m here. I understand that RB’ers are very passionate and protective of their work, there are some exceptional images on this site (some I’ve even added to my favourites!), and I feel very honoured my images are accepted on RB. So, tell me, why are you here? what do you want to achieve? What sorts of comments do you look for? I might see you around, Red Bubbling away! BFN, dabble : )

There have some really interesting discussions going on the last two days. Caused by the full moon or eclipse? Sorry, just joking. One got taken down because of negative comments that had been made. I just want to say to everyone who started a lively discussion in their blogs, if they get too out of control by all means take them down. You started the topic. It’s your right, but please don’t quit initiating discussions! You all have given me more to think about in connection with my art than I’ve had for years. After reading some of the comments on photography, I went back and took a look at my portfolio. Nothing got changed, but it made me look again. Please guys, keep talking!

lauren-rabbit / For all you admirers of black and white prints from large negatives I have an artist you probably never have heard of yet. I refer to her when the subject of “art” comes up on the internet. She has become a friend and I have done my best to support her work and her. We think she is about to be discovered and I think it is overdue.

postman just been..and still nuthing from my RedBubble Order! :( :( :( but my cards that i ordered from Zazzle in USA.. arrived, and i ordered them on the 5th Nov (a day after my RedBubble order..) Okay, I’ve got the last of the stuff I ordered from the bubble today. So, I can begin to give some impressions on what I have. Might help to list what I ordered (generically, not specifics). A Good Handful of Cards One Canvas Print One T-shirt 5 Calendars Impressions The cards are first rate. I honestly don’t buy a lot of cards. I haven’t done Christmas cards in years, and when I did, we’re talking the most generic stuff possible, and these cards from redbubble are light years from the quality of those. No complaints are concerns. I would still like the ability to set an individual percent on my own cards versus prints, especially with the base price rising. But that’s a technical issue, not a quality issue. The canvas print is nice. It was very well put assembled and packed. Through no fault of redbubble, I had a slight mishap with it and managed to get something indelible on the surface of the print. So, what I have on my wall and what I received are not quite the same. Essentially, I have a one of a kind because I put paint brush to canvas and did my own bit of repair. I still don’t know what I foolishly did, but when I first pulled the print out of its well-packaged cocoon it was just fine. The t-shirt is nice. It’s a gift, so I only opened it up long enough to get a little glimpse at it. Nice touches, the sticker that wraps the t-shirt includes nutritional info. type stuff and even lists Pompeii as one of the ingredients (the t-shirt is a scene from Pompeii)! Oh, and in keeping with the theme of food, it included a set of chop sticks. Very happy, especially as a gift. The calendars I received today. By and large, happy, but they are a bit, I don’t know, dark? I have prints of almost all the images I used for this and none of them are as dark as they are on the paper the calendars was done for. The darker areas of the photos are practically black. Anyone else have this experience? There were photos that were quite complimented by this, but some just didn’t look all that hot to me. They’re family gifts for this year, but next year I’d be interested in doing some calendars for sale, so any feedback on what should be expected in the future is appreciated. So, overall happy and impressed. Maybe a tad disappointed in the calendars. I would definitely want to have enough lead time next year to order and preview the results before I offered them for general consumption next year.

In my humble opinion… Christmas is a time when all the people we didn’t have enough time for all year have a day off at the same time as you, and therefore we are obliged to see them. Christmas is a time where we gather in communities of friends, family or faith and attempt to bond over similarities. Christmas puts pressure on us to be happy and healthy and interesting, and to converse with people, and take photos and smile. Christmas is synonymous with excess- presents, food, drinking, behavior, risk taking. Christmas is about how we feel – me me me. Who spent the most, who was the most generous, who chose the most heartfelt gift, who suprised me the best… Christmas reminds us of all the bad things that happened on or around any previous Christmas and makes us depressed Christmas is never allowed to be ‘alone time’ Christmas means spreading yourself thin so that you can visit everyone who wants to see you, despite most of them not inviting you around the other 363 days of the year, or likely to invite you around for the following 364. Christmas is a time for guilt. What didn’t I buy in time? What charity should I have given to? I should have gone to Church. I should have chosen a better present. I shouldn’t have ignored these people all year. Christmas… Sorry if I think it’s a bit overrated. P.S. despite my negativity about it, I do have fun… really

No… That should be Negative Natalie actually. I’m prone to periods of abject negativity, and it’s something that I really dislike in myself. Of course, there’s a dangerous spiral right there, so I’ve come here to blab about the things on my mind and to ask fellow bubblers if they suffer from Tormented Artist’s Syndrome too. At the moment I’ve got lots of things on the go, commissioned paintings, work for sale in various spots, a wedding to plan, freelance illustration and graphic design etc. It’s been quite hard for me to make the switch from 9-5 to whenever-whenever, so I have found myself waking up late and staying up even later. My sleep patterns are totally haywire, and instead of waking up with a clear head knowing what I have to do during the day, I’m waking up wooly headed, working on whatever I damn well please! My plan to combat this disorganised approach is to write myself proper lists of the things I want to achieve on a week to week, then day to day, basis. I do really well when I have routine, and when I have a full time job I’m the organised one who manages her time superbly; now I’m my own boss I think I’ve taken things a little too far! I also want to work on my communication with people. People often think that as a “creative” I am disorganised and do not care for detail. This is an incorrect assumption. I prefer to make everything clear, and outline expectations for all parties from the get go. Unfortunately, I can be quite insecure and unsure especially with people I do not know. Without going into specifics, I recently had dealings with a party where I was not assertive enough to make my expectations clear. Now I am regretting that I did not speak up, because I am unsure and feeling very negative about the situation with this party. So, I want to make sure that I am assertive enough to fully disclose my expectations in the future. I should even go back to this party and have a chat about what’s going on just to allay my fears. So, as an artist, how do you manage your negative stress? How do you mismanage it? I’m really curious to know, as artists don’t often talk about this issue. We’re really not all sad cases, we’re just misunderstood!

Thanks to an article in Popular Photography, I was able to learn this fun trick to change things up in your photos. This feature should work in most types of Photoshop. I use regular ol’ Photoshop 7.0 so let me know if this doesn’t work for you and I will do my best to assit you in trying to figure this out. 1. Open Photoshop. / 2. Open an image (go ahead, pick an image! any image!) / 3. On the bottom, right hand part of your screen, you will see a box that has a picture of the image you opened and has three tabs: Layers, Channels and Paths. / 4. On that image in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, right click the image and select, “Duplicate Layer”. A box will pop up with a prompt for a title of this new layer. Go ahead and name it if you’d like but it’s not necessary, so click the “OK” button. / 5. Select the second layer (the one you just duplicated) and on your keyboard, hit the “Control” and “i” button at the same time. This will produce a negative (or inverted) version of your photo. / 6. Click on the drop down button for the Layers Tab and click “Blending Options…”. / 7. Under the “General Blending” area, select the drop down menu for “Blend Mode:”. / 8. Select “Color”. Click “OK”. And there you have it! A positively negative image! =D -Brittany

Hey all, / Below are a list of easy keyboard commands for Photoshop. I’m using a regular PC (Windows) but if you use a mac, all of the controls will be different…and because I don’t have a Mac within reach, I can’t get the commands for that. Sorry Mac users! Control + N = Opening a New Canvas / Control + O = Opening a new project from a different file (such as a photo) / Control + Z = Undo very last action; nothing past that. / Control + Alt + Z = Undo past actions; infinite. / Control + Shift + Z = Redo an action (that is, if you have already undone an action.) / Control + Shift + F = Fade… (This is a VERY useful tool that I just discovered about 2 minutes ago…For example, you draw something a little too light…do this command then you can make the brush stroke’s opacity darker! Again, VERY useful!) / Control + X = Cut / Control + C = Copy / Control + V = Paste / Control + Shift + V = Paste Into (Don’t know exactly what this does for sure yet but, apparently it’s useful?) / Control + I = Invert (makes a negative [or positive] of the image selected) / Control + A = Selects the whole canvas / Control + Shift + D = Reselects the part that was once selected, then deselected. / Control + D = Deselects the canvas / Control + – = Zoom Out / Control + + = Zoom In And there’s plenty more but these are the basic necessary keyboard commands for Photoshop. -Brittany

Below are the steps on how to blend images: 1. Open one image. (Control + O) / 2. To the right of the screen, there should be a “Layers” box. In it, there should be a thumbnail of the image you have open and it should say, “Background”. You’ll want to make this a regular layer so, on your keyboard, hold the “Alt” key and double click on the layer name. It should now say “Layer 0”. / 3. Now, open a second image in a DIFFERENT canvas than the first image. (Control +O) / 4. With the “Move Tool”, move the second image onto the first image. Place it where ever you’d like the images to meet. / 5. Add a Layer Mask to the layer now titled, “Layer 1”. (Layer>Add Layer Mask>Reveal All) / 6. Select the Gradient Tool (on the toolbar on left. If you still don’t know what this is, then just hit “G” on your keyboard and it will select it.) / 7. Make sure you have the black to white gradient selected. Then hold the “Shift” and drag the mouse over the image; over the part that you want people to see still. And that’s it! You can tweak it a little using the Eraser (E) tool if you’d like. Hope this helped! / -Brittany

Why people are giving me impression that I am unimportant? I honestly trying to be helpful, always if I can help I DO.. With me it is EXACTLY opposite – if I need little help once in a while, I CAN NOT find anybody. / Always they have excuses NOT to.. What is wrong with me? / Because the reason is in me… Lost and tired…
/ This was just playing …
/ This was just playing with a few different things, and my first attempt at cutting designs into paper. This piece was thick watercolour paper so I blunted two blades! / On my second attempt I tried to organise my design better. It’s hard to successfully translate my paisleys into this technique but I’ll keep trying. I used craft card and it was SO thick! / It casts rad shadows! / And for this one I folded the sheet in half and placed a silhouette over the cut out designs. It’s a very good technique to do if you want to exercise your awareness of negative and positive space. I could keep doing it all night except I have developed horrible sore calluses on my fingers! / I just did this one before and decided to add it here :)

COLLECTING Collecting can become so addictive, especially for an artist. My found objects and things are the inspiration and starting point for most of my artwork and ideas. When I see something; it can trigger of an instant idea and give me a vision to work with.I think this is why I love museums too as display and arranging objects are an important part of my work. I have been collecting since I was born. I used to hide stuff under my bed in boxes as a child .As an adult I’m still putting stuff into boxes and plastic bags and other strange things. I view my collections as arrangements. They are all art installations scattered around my place as well as material for use in my arts projects Walking through the streets to the local shop I always come home with something foot trodden. A piece of paper, packaging, a bright piece of plastic, glass all will be used in my art eventually. When I travel overseas (much to the sometimes embarrassment to friends and family) I pick up off the ground, bottle tops, lolly papers, wires bright bits of plastic, even if an item disturbs me I’ll bring it home.On a tour once in Europe the whole busload of passengers collected bottle tops for me. My stuff may brood for years in a dark space or cupboard till I come across it again sending me off on another project. On my last trip to Paris I came home with 15 kilo of junk. I collected baguette bags, bits of string, stones, free ad cards, labels from food items, torn posters, a book and papers from a bin. All sorts of ephemera is precious to me. I collect found photographs, as they tell a story about people and places I’ll never know about.I make up my own stories. I collect found images, negatives, scientific stuff, equations, wire, tin, bones, animal skeletons, fur, hair, watches, old mobile covers, eye glasses, shrivelled things, found numbers and fonts from keyboards, magazines and advertising, boxes, packaging, all sorts paper, vintage clothes, fabrics, wall papers, shells, driftwood, snowglobes, toys, childrens books and so much more I go to op shops, cities, airports underground spaces ,beaches, garage sales, friends houses and sometimes, find stuff on EBay though, part of the fun and attraction for me is, the actual finding of a material that is discarded and thrown away. I like to recycle it into something else or, just show its beauty, as it is. Collections of stuff are also extremally important for future generations, for History. 100’s years from now someone may come across my piece of fabric, wallpaper ,lolly paper, box ,bone etc that will give them information on of how we lived in our time, in our place. Collections are also portraits of those who love to glean….. Check out Andy Warhol’s boxes and boxes of stuff he collected over his life time http://www.warhol.org/collections/archives.html
