  • This piece came from 30mins that I spent with a strand of pearls to get a feel for how I would do a sitting with a client..

  • THE CAFE SERIES / Model – Madeline Taylor / Make Up & Hair – Sarah Hain / Photographer& Stylist – Naomi Mawson “Her red enamel teapot” by Netta Her red enamel teapot. If put on the spot and asked to decide what single thing I loved my Mother most for, I would have to say it was this. Mother carried the art of compromise with a sapphire sparkle in her eye. She conceded that to survive marriage and my Father’s Mother, a teapot was essential. Afternoons and cake were mandatory. I knew she would rather languish through this time of day with a delicate crystal tulip of Cinzano Bianco, slice of lime, with a sprig of mint if feeling really decadent, trumpeting James Joyce at twenty decibels to an enthralled purple exotic fighting fish in pride of place beside her black, soft lounge. Grandmother was never invited into the ‘reading room’. My Mother was an advanced conservationist in the 40s, very against pollution. Rebel red enamel teapot, not china. Flamboyant red glazed sumptuous strawberry tart on a virginal white plate. My Mother never deviated. She received Grandmother in the ‘front room’ twice a week. Mother always matched a tiny detail on her person to the sensuousness of her servings. Red drop earrings barely hidden and teasing within her russet red hair. A red garter that only I or Daddy actually saw. But I knew it was there, slightly bumpy on her thigh, under the smooth lines of her dress. We knew she was really really cross with Grandmother’s ‘tafering’ as she softly called it to Daddy, when she wore the large red rose at her throat and ‘lawdy be’ matched it with lurid red lipstick. Grandmother usually missed a few visits after Mother wore the rose. Daddy was very quite too. I still live with my Mother; well technically my Mother lives with me and my ‘tribe’ of children and love. She has dementia. I have a theory about brain deterioration. I know it is caused by excessive acquiescing. Women of my Mother’s era were the gold medallists in subjugation. It clogs up the brain. Words unsaid. Feelings avoided. Emotions denied. All sewage backflow. Mother is released from all that, she is quite aggressive. The red enamel teapot is now my treasure. Sometimes I need to serve tea in it with a red tart on a white plate. My Mother ‘sees’ me on those occasions. Her sapphire eyes snap into mine and she is momentarily shocked. Her knowing and gentle laugh will be brief but we treasure those seconds over the tea from the red enamel teapot. (Inspired by Tea & Tart a wonderful picture by Naomi Mawson)

  • / / A little bit of nostalgia running through this drawing, with the good old love beads, i always love wearing love beads, and I still have some which are orange and lime … and another strand of blue and white. You can wear them so many different ways. The image was drawn in pencil on cartridge paper in my A3 spiral bound art journal and after photographing I coloured her digitally on the computer. Before I took the photo I actually painted her ‘love beads’ with acrylics and inks…and i stuck a fimo flower on her beads, which i made for another application, and then painted it naples yellow with a white centre.

  • / the real me / for the Happy Challenge – my happiness rating out of 10 points is 7.5 gradually inching my way up to 10 lol / / original pencil drawing (coloured in photoshop) / Yesterday I added “Spectrum 7.0” to red bubble but have since renamed it Inner Child as after I talked with you all and listened to your comments, the title seemed more appropriate. I just wasn’t so happy with “Inner Child”... i felt i must be able to do something better than that, and Paul McClintock’s brilliant portrait, inspired me so much, that i forgot to go shopping today, am still in my pj’s and pushed myself hard to produce something more professional and more worthy of the challenge. So here’s my new self portrait for the Happy Challenge in which you have to rate yourself on a scale from 1-10 (1 being seriously depressed, 10 being the happiest) and then create self-portrait expressing that state. Any artistic medium/technique is allowed. It’s called …..’as I am’ I drew this from a photograph I have from one of my avatars, i did what Paul said he did, worked from looking at it on the computer, and was able to create a better likeness this way, than from trying to draw myself ‘live’ in the mirror. I tell you what, it’s the scariest process for me to try, because i get so down if i stuff things up, and with a portrait there’s no room for really making a mess of it, you just have to get a likeness in there…. I am very very very proud of this… I am definitely a little plumper, but there is something very much me here…I hope you like it… The challenge doesn’t open for another 5 hours so get your pencils out everyone and start your portraits!! :) In the portrait I am wearing one of my favourite necklaces which is a glass disc with art by Frozenfa called Dear Pillow from her Silentcries gallery here on Red Bubble The Challenge is opens for entries soon. Voting starts in about 20 days.
