  • Barking Owls are most enigmatic birds! / They have loads of personality and their name derives from their dog-like staccato calls. They also have another high-pitched call which is best described as a woman being strangled! / I’ve heard it once in 24 years of observing these birds and all I can say is that it is most disconcerting!

  • This is an Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio),He is a Florida Resident currently he lives at The Bush Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, Florida The Eastern Screech-owl (Megascops asio) is one of the smallest species of owls in North America. They are 6-10 inches (16-25 cm) Tall with a Wingspan of 19-24 inches (48-61 cm) and Weigh 4.27-8.61 ounces (121-244 g) Screech-owls are generally colored in various brownish hues with usually a whitish, patterned underside, which helps to camouflage them against the bark of trees. They prefer to hang out in old trees with hollows; these are home to their prey which includes insects, reptiles, small mammals such as bats and mice and other small birds. Screech-owls have a good sense of hearing which helps them locate their prey in any habitat. They also possess well-developed raptorial claws and a curved bill. They usually carry their food back to their nests, to guard against the chance of losing their meal to a larger animals. • I was shooting the hawk on the left as it perched on a tall post when the second hawk exploded out of the sky, literally scaring the crap out of the other bird. Look closely – you can see it dropping! The second bird claimed the prime perch for itself for a few moments, and then flew off. Tsala Apopka Lake, Hernando, in central Florida, USA. (I was told by a local that they are Marsh Hawks, but they may be Red Shouldered.) Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 (10MP/12x Leica lens). Photoshop confession: There was a radio antenna intruding into the frame. Since the background is so plain, it was easy to mask it out. Other than that, the shot is exactly as it happened. Also available with the poop digitally removed! :-)

  • The Galápagos Hawk (Buteo galapagoensis) is a large hawk endemic to the Galápagos Islands. Known for its fearlessness towards humans and authority over the islands as the only original predator, this bird has inhabited the Galápagos archipelago for over 300,000 years. I was lucky enough to see this fellow just sitting on a rock, with the Pacific ocean in the background.

  • This is a VERY RARE owl. On rare occasions you may observe a bird that has a familiar look to it – the right size and shape – but the color is not right. The absence of over abundance of one or more pigments is the cause. Sometimes birds that are not normally black develop that way and are called “melanistic” . This occurs when more that the normal amount of melanin is produced. For this to happen one of the parents must be melanistic and the changes of that happening is extremely rare. I photographed this very young Melasnistic Form Barn Owl at the “Barn Owl Centre” in the UK, we where very privileged that we could view this very rare bird as it is not normally shown to the public because it is still very young. / Camera Canon 400D / Lens: Sigma 70 – 200mm

  • Went for a walk today…to clear my head…lots of yucky stuff going on….I found a HUGE Bald eagles nest, thanks to a very close friend who took me on private property…I was so very lucky to get shots of Dinner being brought to the nest…Although I don’t know what the prey is…It seems to be some kind of large chick, or it could even be a human “offering” of a chicken…it has been known to happen around here..on Vancouver Island….

  • Storm the Golden Eagle was basking in the sun today, she found a nice spot by the barn, where the sun just happened to be hitting right behind her…interesting group of shots…almost looks like paintings…I love Storm..so much..

  • 10×14 watercolor enhanced colored pencil on Arches satin finish watercolor paper. Original available. The Barn Owl (Tyto alba) or, to distinguish it from relatives, Common Barn Owl, is an owl in the barn owl family Tytonidae. This is one of the two groups of owls, the other being the typical owls Strigidae. Any member of the family Tytonidae is sometimes referred to as a barn owl. The Barn Owl is the most widely distributed species of Tytonidae, and one of the most widespread species of any bird. Description / This is a pale, long-winged, long-legged owl, 33–39 cm in length with an 80–95 cm wingspan. Its head and upperparts are buff, and the underparts are white. The face is heart shaped. It has an effortless wavering flight as it quarters pastures or similar hunting grounds. Alternative names often refer to the appearance, white underparts, or eerie, silent flight, including Monkey-faced Owl, Ghost Owl, Church Owl, Golden Owl, Rat Owl and Stone Owl. In the US it is incorrectly sometimes called Screech Owl because the Barn Owl has a notable shreee scream, ear-shattering at close range. They also hiss like snakes. When captured or cornered, they throw themselves on their backs and flail with sharp-taloned feet, an effective defence. Contrary to popular belief, they do not make the call “tu-whit to-whoo” (which is made by the Tawny Owl). (info from Wikipedia) Complete 2009

  • The Southern Caracara (Caracara plancus), also known as the Southern Crested Caracara, is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. It has a total length of 50-65 cm (20-26 in) and a wing-span of 120 cm (47 in). Individuals from the colder southern part of its range average larger than those from tropical regions. / A bold, opportunistic raptor, often seen walking around on the ground looking for food. Mainly feeds on carcasses of dead animals, but will steal food from other raptors, raid bird nests, and take live prey if the possibility arrives (mostly insects or other small prey, but at least up to the size of a Snowy Egret). It is typically solitary, but several individuals may gather at a large food-source (e.g. dumps).
