I love this shot. The Wife and I were doing the down river canoe ride. I had the long lens and this beautiful bird flew up on a dead tree branch to show his stuff I guess. Bateleur Eagle / Terathopius ecaudatus The Bateleur eagle is the most famous of the snake eagles. Bateleur is French for “tightrope-walker”. This name was probably chosen because of its distinctive aerial acrobatics. Its pitch black feathers with white under the wings, bright red face and legs and black beak are characteristic markings. This was taken at my work. He let me get about 4 ft from him. I am sure I could have gotten closer but his sharp claws and beak scared me LOL. Yes sitting on our mailbox :) He is a Goshawk. Possibly still a juvenile but I am unsure. Taken in Atlanta, Georgia – My Atlanta Hawk / Nikon D80 / 55-200mm Tamron lense / 200mm / f/4.5 / 1/80 / ISO 100 I did crop out the numbers on the mail box other than that as is from camera. / Hope you enjoy it. /

This is the quickest moving animal on the planet, the Peregrine Falcon. These birds can dive in excess of 400 kilometres per hour! This is faster than free fall speed, as they flap their wings to get even more speed on the dive.. Their prey is mostly flying, like birds and bats, so speed is a great advantage. They also hunt small mammals, small reptiles, and insects. They are the most wide-spread bird of prey, found in almost every country in the world. The Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) is a medium to large bird of prey, whose range covers most of Europe and extends into Asia. It is typically between 51-57 cm in length with a 110 to 130 cm (48-60 inch) wingspan, making it a medium-sized raptor. There are around 40,000 breeding pairs in Britain. Pairs mate for life. To attract a mate (or impress his existing mate) the male performs a ritual aerial display before the beginning of Spring. This spectacular display is known as ‘the roller coaster’. He will rise high up in the sky, to turn and plummet downward, in a spiral, twisting and turning as he comes down. To then rise immediately upward to repeat the exercise. This broad-winged raptor has a wide variety of plumages, and in Europe can be confused with the similar Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus) and the only distantly related Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), which mimics the Common Buzzard’s plumage for a degree of protection from Goshawks. The plumage can vary in Britain from almost pure white to black, but is usually shades of brown, with a pale ‘necklace’ of feathers. WILD & FREE / / We were so lucky to spend hours with this mum and cubs as they moved around the ice flows. These cubs were around seven months old and full of joy – although they did not seem all that keen to keep up with mum. / / The sea ice is shrinking at an alarming rate, which has a huge impact for the bears as this is their main hunting ground.
