  • I love this shot. The Wife and I were doing the down river canoe ride. I had the long lens and this beautiful bird flew up on a dead tree branch to show his stuff I guess. I pulled up the camera and the river was gentle for the capture. Lucky and happy too.. I decided to try to clean up the old slide image a bit. 6-11-2008 Perfect To Hang In The Den

  • Not sure of the Name of this Owl. Photo taken at the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis, Mo. 50% of any sales of this photo will be donated to the worldbirdsanctuary.org

  • Bateleur Eagle / Terathopius ecaudatus The Bateleur eagle is the most famous of the snake eagles. Bateleur is French for “tightrope-walker”. This name was probably chosen because of its distinctive aerial acrobatics. Its pitch black feathers with white under the wings, bright red face and legs and black beak are characteristic markings. Unlike most creatures, female Bateleur eagles are larger than males. A big thanks to Deb for choosing this image to be showcased in Pay It Forward. Please take a look at her stunning portfolio here This is what she had to say about “Snake Hunter” “This is my all time favorite piece on redbubble. This was a very difficult choice to make!!! I have such a passion and love for nature but most of all……the birds of prey. So I gravitated in that direction. The piece I chose is of a bird of prey. It’s titled “Snake Hunter” by bobbymcleod. I love this brilliant shot and have chosen this to be my favorite. One reason being, that you don’t see many shots of these eagles. And secondly, these eagles like so many birds of prey……. have such power/determination in their eyes and they are just so incredibly beautiful!! Bobby has captured all of those elements in his brilliant photo of this stunning Bateleur Eagle.” Thanks again Deb! • WILD & FREE / / Polar bear mother praying for some ice so she may hunt to feed her cubs. / / The sea ice is shrinking at an alarming rate, which has a huge impact for the bears as this is their main hunting ground. More and more bears are being found to have drowned while trying to find the ice, even though they can swim up to sixty miles or so! / / I hope the ice does not completely vanish and that they always have somewhere to hut! • Praying Mantis. This insect gets it’s name from the way in which it’s two front legs are bent and held together, suggesting the position of a prayer. Any profits made from the purchase of this piece, will be donated to the Wildlife-appeal / /

  • This was taken at my work. He let me get about 4 ft from him. I am sure I could have gotten closer but his sharp claws and beak scared me LOL. Yes sitting on our mailbox :) He is a Goshawk. • The Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) is a medium to large bird of prey, whose range covers most of Europe and extends into Asia. It is typically between 51-57 cm in length with a 110 to 130 cm (48-60 inch) wingspan, making it a medium-sized raptor. There are around 40,000 breeding pairs in Britain. Pairs mate for life. To attract a mate (or impress his existing mate) the male performs a ritual aerial display before the beginning of Spring. This spectacular display is known as ‘the roller coaster’. He will rise high up in the sky, to turn and plummet downward, in a spiral, twisting and turning as he comes down. To then rise immediately upward to repeat the exercise. This broad-winged raptor has a wide variety of plumages, and in Europe can be confused with the similar Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus) and the only distantly related Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), which mimics the Common Buzzard’s plumage for a degree of protection from Goshawks. The plumage can vary in Britain from almost pure white to black, but is usually shades of brown, with a pale ‘necklace’ of feathers. I used my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT with EOS Lens 18 -55. / BEST VIEWED LARGE. Shutter speed was 1/1600, F-stop and aperture value F/7.1, Focal Length was 200 mm., and ISO was 400. Hawks are widely reputed to have visual acuity several times that of a normal human being. This is due to the many photoreceptors in the retina (up to 1,000,000 per square mm for Buteo, against 200,000 for humans), an exceptional number of nerves connecting these receptors to the brain, and an indented fovea, which magnifies the central portion of the visual field.

  • This is the quickest moving animal on the planet, the Peregrine Falcon. These birds can dive in excess of 400 kilometres per hour! This is faster than free fall speed, as they flap their wings to get even more speed on the dive.. Their prey is mostly flying, like birds and bats, so speed is a great advantage. They also hunt small mammals, small reptiles, and insects. They are the most wide-spread bird of prey, found in almost every country in the world. Canon 50D 300mm Australia Zoo QLD, I decided to re-do this photo without the blackened background, got a bit carried away earlier in the year with ruining photos.. Available Large, and best viewed Large!

  • This is Storm the Golden Eagle…found at Pacific Northwest Raptors in the Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island BC….what an honor to be able to photograph this beautiful bird so close up….She was so special…

  • LOCATION CAPTURED: GROENLAND GAMELODGE, Tolwe, Limpopo Province, South Africa CAMERA: NIKON D50 / Lens: 70-300mm F/4-5.6 D / Focal Length: 220mm / Digital Vari-Program: Sports / Metering Mode: Multi-Pattern / 1/500 sec – F/5.3 / Exposure Comp.: 0 EV / Sensitivity: ISO 400 OWLS / Nocturnal, erect-standing birds of prey characterized by large, rounded heads, large forward-facing eyes set in a flattened face and feathered legs (except for Pel’s Fishing Owl). Some have feathered adornments on their heads that resemble ears. Immature are usually darker and fluffier than adults. THE GIANT or Verreaux’s Eagle Owl / A large grey owl, immature is browner. / Told by pink eyelids and dark brown eyes at all ages. ‘Ear’ tufts not always raised. / Voice is a series of deep grunts ‘hu=hu=hu,hu-hu’; female and young utter a long drawn –out whistle that may be repeated all night. / Singly on large trees in bushveld and open savanna, especially along rivers and watercourses. 60-5 cm. This shoot was shortly after the “Giant Eagle Owl” swooped out of a high tree to a palmtree, close-by, and grabbed a “weavers nest”, with chics inside, and went straight to this tree with the nest in his claws. It still is under his claw. He ripped it open with his beak and had his breakfast very early, just after sunrise.

  • Went to go spend the day with Storm, Hank and Shaya today….and as luck would have it… / Hank decided to go for a bath….Oh my gosh…was I lucky or what??? / The white you are seeing in Hank’s eyes is something called a nictitating membrane. This eyelid is transparent, and sweeps across the eye from side to side. It grows in the inner corner of the eye, right next to the tear duct. This is a protection against getting any water, blood, etc in the eye…So all my bath pictures have Hank with his nictitating membrane. Nothing is wrong with his eyes at all…

  • Please meet Manwe…My new friend…and, as luck would have it…he also decided to take a bath, just like my dear Hank…Only..Manwe..really really knows how to plunge…what a guy…and I feel pretty damn lucky to have such fine feathered friends…. I am so excited to announce that this photo is being published in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC! It will be in February 2010 issue…YAY!!! such an honor

  • Close-up detail: / Digital art composition inspired by the owls that hoo hoot outside my window at night. See “Out On A Limb” #1, also here in my RB portfolio. The two can be matted and framed and hung together. They’re of a similar color palette and each compliments the other. Here’s another of my owl art works entitled, “Noisy Owl”
