Log entry May 2nd… watching feeder on pole – nawww squirrel can’t get up that – it’s too slippery! Naw…. like he had suction cups on his feets the little red squirrel not only could climb up that pole, but he could do it upside down!!! lol! sigh… there goes the seeds again… If hubby sees this he will probably take action… I’m afraid to see what will happen! (shooing squirrel away… alas too late, hubby is watching the squirrel through one of the other doors… it’s having the time of it’s squirrel life showing off on that pole – must have been a pole dancer in a past life!) To be continued…... (pics are in my art section)

Construction has begun to reorganize the deck and feeders. Currently we have 4 feeders, a suet, a couple bags of thistle and one regular feeder which holds 3 types of seeds, fruit and nuts, black oil sunflower seeds and safflower seeds. Yummy! The squirrel tho is feasting out on the sunflower seeds like there is no tomorrow and we had to fill that section twice already…. We’re going to suspend the feeder on it’s wire off a tall pole.. maybe get some more feeders and a few hanging plants on the way! Yeah! Now there’s an idea! To be continued….... (pics are in the art section)

  • Preliminary results... so far a-ok! bird feeders vs. squirrel....

Okay! Seems the birds love the feeder even more now that it’s suspended! Even while hubby was continuing to set up a few more feeders and some hanging plants, the birds flocked, sometimes only a few feet away from him! I went out to do the vegetable pots and yes, the birds certainly do love this new arrangement! There were times I could almost reach out and touch them they were so close! Haven’t seen the squirrel yet today…... To be continued….... bird feeders vs. squirrel….

  • Masaman Update: Baby Squirrel Prayers, Please

Earlier this morning, I was watching a small chipmunk in my garden, as he went from place to place finding and eating the food I left out for the baby squirrel family, Masaman, Roon and Mo. It has been raining for the better part of this week, and I hadn’t seen Masaman for four days. I won’t lie, I was very worried about him. As I was watching the chipmunk, something made me look over toward the edge of the flower bed… and there, blended in with the soil, lay Masaman, face down in the relentless rain. He was soaked to the bone. I gasped and ran outside and scooped him up. / He lay limp in my hand. I began to cry immediately, in fear of what was to come next. He was shivering from the cold, his little hairless body shiny with rain, cold and exhausted. I wrapped him in a towel and stimulated him with short rubs while drying him off. I was trying to keep him alert and help the blood circulate. I got the hair dryer and set it on low and aimed it at my open fingers, that I left hovering over his towel-wrapped body. It took a lot longer than it should have because I simply could not see through my own tears. I begged God not to take him. He was as close to death as I have ever seen any animal. Once he was dry and warm, I offered him some peanut butter. He was mildly interested, and tried to suckle the butter from the spoon, but as it was chunky peanut butter, the small pieces of peanut were preventing him from being able to get a good vacuum seal with his little mouth. I then realized that the new jar of peanut butter I bought a few days ago was the creamy variety. That worked better. But then he began to struggle with the stickiness. So, I carved out the fleshy center of a grape, and offered it to him on the end of my finger. It was then, his little paw reached out to rest on my finger for leverage and he began to eat the grape with a little more enthusiasm. He had very little jaw strength, so smaller pieces were a must. Within just minutes, he was fervently taking the grape bits from my hand… and suddenly he became very agitated.. and wanted more and more. It was then that she realized he was being handled by a human, and tried to sit up and let me know he was not ‘vulnerable’. I thanked God… and I decided to put him in a towel-lined pet crate, with a cupful of shredded paper to nest in, and a bowl of diced strawberries and grapes. Each time I checked on him, he was sitting upright, although wobbly, and he has made huge progress on the bowl of fruit. I am cooking him some carrots now, cooked in coconut cream. It was the Masaman Curry he enjoyed when I first saw him, that made me think he might enjoy these. I hope he does. Please pray for Masaman, as I know he is not out of the woods yet. He is unmercifully tiny, and has not shown signs of getting any more fur… things that will need to be rectified if he is ever to survive in the wild. Please let me know to do the right things to help this tiniest of God’s creatures, to become strong and healthy. LavenderMoon~

I don’t know why I always do this. I always think I can somehow make a difference… make something better…assist nature. After another frantic, heartwrenching session of trying to revive him, my sweet little Masaman lost his long battle at 6:10 this morning. He was just too tiny, too frail. He died in my hand. He seemed fine at bedtime, midnight. With the exception of some additional whimpering, which he usually did when he was missing his siblings. He had been held a lot yesterday, because he seemed to be demanding that. And although he had six Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast, he didn’t eat as much as I would have liked him to throughout the day. He enjoyed the cantaloupe most, and a grape… a few more Cheerios. He wouldn’t eat the peanuts I had provided for some additional fat. He was quite active all day, but kept calling out for attention, so I held him frequently and it was the only time he seemed completely content. It has always bothered me that he had no fur and zero body fat, his skin stretched over his tiny little frame, every bone on his body visible through his furless flesh. Job one was to fatten him up. I keep telling myself that I did the right thing, scooping him up out of the rain on June 5, 2009. He was so near death, I never expected to see him come back so full of life. From the first day I saw him, on May 11, 2009, he has had my heart. So, when he fell, lifeless and cold in my garden, I intervened… wanted to make a difference, give him a fighting chance. But God never provided this adorable little man with some of the basic things he needed to survive this world. He was vulnerable to far too much and armed against nothing. I will never understand why God will bring a creature in to this world, let it fight and suffer for a time, only to remove it again. The process itself indicates insane cruelty. Masaman had only his instincts to work with when he was brought in to this life… and they failed him once. I tried to bridge the gaps where nature had so cruelly let him down. I thank all of you who tried your best to help me with this little guy. He brought me a lot of joy and happiness in the days he was in my life. I had prayed and hoped for many more. My heart is completely broken. I have never cried harder over a wild animal than I have for the loss of my little Masaman. It should never have happened this way. He deserved so much more… Below is a poem written just for Masaman by Panda65. Even across miles and miles of ocean, Masaman touched hearts in this world, and there are few writers that understand the loss of a precious pet, wild or tame, than Panda: Journey’s end / / Brief days are most precious: / How we love them all. / While we stay / Bones articulate the will / And skin will bravely cover, / But hairless flesh is prey / To slouching predators / Or the death that lies within. / / Still in folds of earth / A lid will mimic sleep, / Deep in remembrance of a happy day. / A picture keeps a ray of joy / Unending, / Mixed as it is with tears. / / Does the rain speak of God’s lost impulse, / Or is rain all we know? / Love and the work of loving hands / Remain, / Where fickle deities come and go. / / / / For little Masaman, Spring 2009
