  • An exquisite, tiny, Australian ground orchid, so easily missed by passers-by. Baluk William Reserve I posed the question as to whether this is / Purple Beard Orchid – Calochilus robertsonii / or / Red Beard – Calochilus paludosus / and it seems from responses to be the latter. Thank you all who have helped me out here. These little angels are no bigger than a ten cent piece, but are stunningly beautiful close-up. Suffering for my art Not long after taking this photograph, I was kneeling down to capture a back-lit subject & was so engrossed that I failed to realise that I was kneeling in a bull-ant nest! I screamed like a girl & ran back to the path, where I carefully put my camera down, then jumped up & down like a maniac frantically swatting them all off me…..

  • Personally I think there is nothing common about it! It’s botanical name is: Calochilus robertsonii. This little beauty was photographed today at Sinclare’s Gully Winery & Cellar Door at Norton Summit in the Adelaide Hills. It is the only eco- certified cellar door in the hills & the wine is very nice. They are also restoring the bush, and it is home to some wonderful native orchids and plants, as well as some stunning bird life such as the Sacred Kingfisher & the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo. It was a wonderful afternoon. We had a tour through the bush & then lunch & wine under the magestic candle bark trees….which included a pair of Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos in plain view up amongst the branches. I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon, good company, food & wine, whilst relaxing amoungst our stunning native vegetation & wildlife…pure bliss! Sinclare’s Gully Winery & Cellar Door
