This photo achieved a highly commended status in the 2007 ANZANG: Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year Award. Ironically the key factors in this photograph were all negative ones, bad weather, poor light, a pitiful ski season, and a less than ideal time to go. As a teacher I only have the opportunity to go ski touring in the school holidays which is either side of the best part of the ski season. Usually this means that I have to travel to the Main Range in NSW which is a fair hike from my home in Melbourne to get to any snow. I had spent the previous day skiing out from Thredbo to the ice covered Lake Albina and as this season had not been overly good the cover was quite patchy. The day I took this shot I had planned to ski up Australia’s second and eighth highest summits, Mt Townsend and Alice Rawson Peak but the weather had produced white out conditions on the heights so by default I ended up skiing below the cloud cover in Lady Northcote’s Canyon. Not too far from my camp I saw these icicles high up a cliff on the Gorge wall. Being alone and so far from assistance should anything go wrong I was in two minds as to whether I should attempt to get to them or not. On three occasions in the most difficult spots I reassessed this decision but the closer I got the better they looked so imprudence won out the day and fortunately nothing went wrong. I don’t know whether it was my presence or the icicles time had come, but after getting two frames off the whole structure collapsed, fortunately the shots came out well. The other element of serendipity was the poor light, in better conditions the icicles would have been dazzlingly bright mitigating any chance of capturing detail in their delicate structure. I have been back to this same spot on two occasions since then to try and recapture this scene with a tripod and better gear but the trips occurred in better conditions resulting in the entire slope having a good cover of snow and therefore no icicles. The fleeting nature of these sorts of scenes is one of the things I love about photography; you can literally eternalise unrepeatable scenes, be it icicles, a sunset or patterns in the sand, what a gift. as you can see we had more cloudy days then sunny ….I had to remember I was in the mountains ..up 3000 feet most times ..and clouds were part of the scenery .... it did clear up but I wanted sun tho !!! we had more cloudy days then sunny until we got to Grand Prairie Alberta … / I didnt mind really . .I was just so thrilled to be there ….. Emerald Paradise As Is… / Canon PowerShot S3 IS Rainbow Springs Florida’s third largest spring, Rainbow Springs pump 600 million gallons of water daily and serves as the head water to the pristine Rainbow River. The property was acquired by the State Park Service in 1990 and is slowly being allowed to revert to its natural state. / Beautiful floral gardens surround the spring, and the area is immensely popular in the spring when the azaleas are in bloom. The state also acquired Rainbow Springs State Campground, located nearby, which was formerly privately owned. From the campground, you can tube or canoe the crystalline waters of Rainbow River, or fish for large mouth bass and other freshwater species. / A nature trail provides a lovely walk past two waterfalls and the azalea gardens, and meanders along the Rainbow River. / /

On the wide open plains of the Kruger National Park, South Africa, we happened upon this large, lone bull. He seemed to be going somewhere, as he detoured around us slightly, wary of our clicking and whispering. When the brief encounter was over, we both went on our way, perhaps, I’d like to think, better for the meeting…

Gerroa is an idyllic village at the Kiama end of Seven Mile Beach on the south coast of New South Wales … their sunset on Tuesday (6 January 08) was aided by smoke haze from bushfires in the Morton National Forest. After a day in which temperatures reached 40 degrees celsius and beyond, there were plenty of relaxed holiday-makers still enjoying the ambience, the breeze and the spectacular skies. Published in DIGITAL PHOTO magazine. There exists a whole row of abandoned buildings along Mormon Row, a phtotgraphic delight, if you don’t mind sharing it with a whole bunch of other photographers ! Deservedly popular , backed up as it is by the amazing Teton mountain range. The town of Jackson is nearby. / The Mormon people were evicted when the National Park was created. I decided to give this the HDR and Orton treatment, to bring out the texture of the wood, and add a little drama to the scene. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D,mounted on tripod, polarising filter, iso 100, f22, 1/30 sec, cloudy WB, RAW file, processed in Photomatix, with further adjustments in PS CS3, and a little Orton applied. Finished with LAB colour to oomph it up a bit ! Cradle Mountain taken from Dove Lake, with the boat shed to the right. The tree to the right is an Australian Gum Tree, or eucalypt. Taken at sunset 5:30pm. I know there is millions of photos of this famous mountain range, so I hope you like this one. Cradle mountain is in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania, Australia. Trelissick Turret / is at the entrance to Trellisick House and Gardens which is a National Trust Property. Unfortunately the house is not open to the public, but well worth a visit. A visit to Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, Canada in early June afforded me a chance to capture this 2 image composite. Just a couple weeks prior, the lake was still frozen solid.

I searched the internet for a really long exposure of Tahquamenon Falls but couldn’t find one. So I figured that my first real shot with my new 10 stop filter would be of this amazing falls. This is a blend of 3 long exposure shots. The first one was 4 minutes, the correctly exposed one was 5 minutes and the bright one was 6 minutes. / Black and white to come soon. / Canon xsi / B+W nd 1000 / B+W CPL
