  • The Open Range Colorado is a land of ever changing weather and scenery, often when you are up in the high country (as the locals here call it) storms have the ability to roll in seemingly out of no where, with little or no warning at all. It is a land of ever changing weather, and as they say, “Welcome to Colorado, wait 10 minutes and the weather will change!”—ya, that basically fits the scene here. Captured in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

  • Featured in “AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat” – June 2009. A very narrow slot canyon appropriately named Spooky Gulch twists and turns for several hundred meters through a dry desert landscape. Its walls tower many meters overhead while the opening in front of you seems to get smaller and smaller. Those hikers that are both brave and thin enough to fit through will find that they are able to make it to the opposite side. At its narrowest point, the little canyon is only about 30 centimeters wide! [Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument website] [Spooky Gulch info and photos] / Copyright © 2004 Brian W. • Sometimes, not often enough in my opinion, I am lucky to get to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado at first light and this was one of those times. Just as the sun started hitting Long’s Peak, I almost ran the car off the road, to park and run in the back seat for my tripod…had to be done! Let me know what ya think! / —-John

  • Equipment used: / Nikon D70s / Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC / B&W 62mm Circular Polarisation Location: / Athabasca Falls, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada Map: / Road Map , Terrain , Satellite Copyright: / © Brendan Schoon , All rights reserved. Background Information: / This picture is taken near Athabasca Falls . Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park is just 23 metres high. However, it is not known for its height. Instead it is known for the force of the falling water due to the quantity of water flowing. Even on a cold morning in the fall, copious amounts of water flow over the falls. A layer of hard quartzite has allowed the falls to cut into the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes. White water rafting often starts below the falls to travel downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper, Alberta. It is a class 5 waterfall, with a drop of 80 ft (24 m) and a width of 60 ft (18 m). • The Utah Prairie Dog is the smallest species of prairie dog, a member of the squirrel family of rodents native to the south central steppes of the US state of Utah. Like all prairie dogs, the Utah Prairie Dog is an active forager, eating a wide array of vegetation including grasses, flowers, and seeds. They build extensive “towns” of underground tunnels and chambers, each town composed of a population of members of an extended prairie dog family. Many other species make use of their burrows, including owls, snakes, and other rodents. source: wikipedia

  • Shot in the Lamar Valley, YELLOWSTONE National Park, USA. A lucky grab-shot. / I had spotted the Cottonwoods and wanted to capture the beautiful colours of Fall against the shadowy hill behind, then I saw the Male Bison emerge from the trees. He had a mission on his mind, a couple of females across the river, LOL !! (out of sight of this shot.) He was moving pretty quickly, and luckily I had my short telephoto lens already attached to the camera ! A magical moment and experience !! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, set on Landscape mode, Aperture Priority, with polarising filter, hand-held, iso 200, f 6.7, 1/180 sec , underexposed by one stop because of the dark shadowy hill , Auto WB ( I mostly use this), lens was my Canon EF 75-300mm set at 200mm (don’t have this lens anymore) RAW file, processed in Adobe Camera Raw, then tweaked in PS CS3, with selective Levels/Curves, and selective colour adjustments. • Yellowstone National Park, USA. / I think maybe that when you visit Yellowstone, it feels like you are on another planet, nothing seems for real ! / The colours and ‘scapes are outlandish, like Mother Nature flipped out ! Weird and wonderful ! / It can be difficult to photograph – the wind was blowing the hot steam towards me very often, fogging up the lens, making everything very wet, not good with those electronics ! / ( I was told that the moisture from the steam can actually etch the lens, so be warned !) / The other problem is folk passing by making the boardwalk bounce around, shaking the tripod…......LOL !! / Fall is a great time to visit, a bit crowded, but those colours really zing out, and the steam is intensified by the cold Autumn air. / Oh to be there in Winter….............. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, hand held, f13, 1/90 sec, at 49mm, iso 100, auto wb, polarising filter, RAW file, processed in PS CS3, levels/curves, selective colour adjustments, finished with LAB colour and Intellisharpen.
