Part of the “Out of Place” series exploring the culture / nature divide – our alienation from nature. I find it perplexing just how easily we humans get mesmerised by work that is often intrinsically meaningless and the virtual world which seems mainly mired in trivia. It’s all the more strange when you consider that the bulk of humanity has only lived in cities for less than 100 years. Prior to that, for countless millennia the natural world was all we knew. / I spend hours in the Park and it’s interesting watching the way other people relate to it. For example, this set of falls is literally 1 minute off the main road through the Park. There are 3 sets of fall each more majestic than the one before. And yet the average amount of time that people spend here I’ve noticed is less than than 10 minutes. 10 minutes!! And then off home to get ready for work or to sit down and watch 4 hours of T.V. / I / just / don’t / get / it. / Still – one advantage – fewer people to bugger up my shots. / Anyway this is part of a series attempting to portray this collective psychosis of our species. Yes she is actually sitting there on top of a 30m waterfall – not photoshopped- very brave I thought, though we did take the wheels off the chair so she didn’t go sailing over. The bottom of the Upper Wattamolla Falls, Royal National Park. Can’t decide between the colour and the b/w. If you look very carefully you can see an angel in the middle of the falls in the coloured version but it disappears in the b/w – my daughter spotted it and I couldn’t see it for ages and then it just popped out at me. But I really like the contrast between the water and the rocks in the b/w so your feedback is most welcome Canon 30D Tv: 6 secs / Av: f/16 / ISO: 200 / FL: 62mm

I found it in Rainbow Springs State Park while visiting the park with my dearest friend. This park is located just outside of Ocala, in Florida. / Canon PowerShot S3 IS

Walking to a view point of Fox Glacier, in New Zealand, we crossed this beautiful waterfall. It is times like these, that you don’t wish to be anywhere else. Further down, we had to cross this over slippery rocks and rushing water. It is a wonder I didn’t fall in. Fox Glacier is part of the Westland Tai Poutini National Park (established 1960) which extends from the highest peaks of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana/Southern Alps to the remote beaches of the wild West Coast. It is an area of magnificent primeval vistas; snow-capped mountains, glaciers, forests, tussock grasslands, coast, lakes, rivers and wetlands. This world-class scenic landscape has been recognised as such with World Heritage status. This was taken with a Canon DSLR EOS 350D camera and timelapse/long exposure of 1 second, handheld (leaning on a railing).

Background Information: / This picture is taken near Athabasca Falls . Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park is just 23 metres high. However, it is not known for its height. Instead it is known for the force of the falling water due to the quantity of water flowing. Even on a cold morning in the fall, copious amounts of water flow over the falls. A layer of hard quartzite has allowed the falls to cut into the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes. White water rafting often starts below the falls to travel downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper, Alberta. It is a class 5 waterfall, with a drop of 80 ft (24 m) and a width of 60 ft (18 m). Temperature was -5c degrees when we venture out to try our luck with snowmaking machine in the area called “Friday Flats” – the beginner slope of Thredbo Resort. Snowmaking and Grooming / Thredbo is the benchmark for snowmaking and grooming in Australia. The already mega snowmaking system that covers 25% of the trails has had another $2 million makeover in the summer and is now fully automated. What does this mean to snow riders? In the 2006 season 42% more snow was made than the previous year, this coming winter the mountain crew expects to produce an extra 30% again. More trails will be covered by the automated system. So better quality, greater coverage and more areas covered. Combine this with a state of the art grooming fleet to smooth the trails (including winch cats to smooth the steep), you know you will always have the best possible snow riding conditions. The "corduroy" surface left behind after a touch up from this mountain crew will make your boards sing!

A typical rainforest stream in the Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania, Australia. / The stream is one of many that can be seen when walking the Overland Track. The Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park is most famous for the mountain for which the park shares its name. / It is a park that is also widely known for one of the great bushwalks of the world – the Overland Track. / In Winter 2007 I spent nine days traversing the entire park with all my camera gear. I was blessed with exceptional weather for that time of year. / This is one of the many images I captured from that journey. Carrying all that camera gear really is worth it! Just another buffalo picture from scenic Yellowstone National Park. I love this one for the variety of natures delights all in one picture! Snow capped mountains, pristine streams, wildlife (view larger to see many geese and other waterfowl in the background water) rolling hills, wildflowers, green piney trees, and the mighty bison. / I know I might be over doing it with the buffalo images but I keep going back to this one on my computer and thinking of that old song, “Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam, where the deer and the antelope play. Where seldom is heard a discouraging word, and the skies are not cloudy all day.” / /

I finally redid the HDR on this one. Hope everyone likes it. I totally dig it although the I kept the original darker one as my desktop picture (cause it looks great on my mac but apparently is too dark on a PC). Rock on all and let me know what you think. Seriously please critique this one for me. This photo has been driving me nuts since the original HDR was too dark. 5 exposure HDR processed in photomatix. Unsharp mask in GIMP. ~ Twin Falls ~ Trail head at Camp Orr in the Buffalo River Wilderness, Arkansas Usa. / The beautiful picturesque Twin Falls now has an added beauty right beside it due to all the rain we have had in the last month. Shot this photo in the pouring rain, using my uni pod, and with my camera on auto, and of course the umbrella was a must! LOL! It was quite the challenge steadying the camera, juggling the umbrella, all the while with the lightning flashing, and the forest canape swirling in the strong winds of the storm, which caused tornadoes in many surrounding areas. By the time I finished this shoot I was soaked to the bone, but this shot and the many others I shot were all worth every moment. Top tier of National Falls in Royal National Park, just south of Sydney. It’s been almost dry for months but with the recent rain we’ve been having it’s started to flow again to sustain the forest. And the angophoras shed their bark not long ago with their trunks revealing a vivid red/orange colour which goes progressively more and more grey over the year until they shed again. One moment you have a fairly drab looking forest and then almost overnight these vivid orange and red colours appear. And the angophora’s are so gnarly in their shape the forest of trees looks like arteries. Some dickhead was recently arrested trying to burn this down. Why they arrested him is beyond me – the drop off to the right of this shot is 30m – more than enough I would have thought. Canon 1Ds MkIII / TV: 30 secs / Av: f/22 / ISO: 100 / FL: 32mm
