Temperature was -5c degrees when we venture out to try our luck with snowmaking machine in the area called “Friday Flats” – the beginner slope of Thredbo Resort. Snowmaking and Grooming / Thredbo is the benchmark for snowmaking and grooming in Australia. The already mega snowmaking system that covers 25% of the trails has had another $2 million makeover in the summer and is now fully automated. What does this mean to snow riders? In the 2006 season 42% more snow was made than the previous year, this coming winter the mountain crew expects to produce an extra 30% again. More trails will be covered by the automated system. So better quality, greater coverage and more areas covered. Combine this with a state of the art grooming fleet to smooth the trails (including winch cats to smooth the steep), you know you will always have the best possible snow riding conditions. The "corduroy" surface left behind after a touch up from this mountain crew will make your boards sing!

Walking to a view point of Fox Glacier, in New Zealand, we crossed this beautiful waterfall. It is times like these, that you don’t wish to be anywhere else. Further down, we had to cross this over slippery rocks and rushing water. It is a wonder I didn’t fall in. Fox Glacier is part of the Westland Tai Poutini National Park (established 1960) which extends from the highest peaks of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana/Southern Alps to the remote beaches of the wild West Coast. It is an area of magnificent primeval vistas; snow-capped mountains, glaciers, forests, tussock grasslands, coast, lakes, rivers and wetlands. This world-class scenic landscape has been recognised as such with World Heritage status. This was taken with a Canon DSLR EOS 350D camera and timelapse/long exposure of 1 second, handheld (leaning on a railing).

Background Information: / This picture is taken near Athabasca Falls . Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park is just 23 metres high. However, it is not known for its height. Instead it is known for the force of the falling water due to the quantity of water flowing. Even on a cold morning in the fall, copious amounts of water flow over the falls. A layer of hard quartzite has allowed the falls to cut into the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes. White water rafting often starts below the falls to travel downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper, Alberta. It is a class 5 waterfall, with a drop of 80 ft (24 m) and a width of 60 ft (18 m). A typical rainforest stream in the Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania, Australia. / The stream is one of many that can be seen when walking the Overland Track. The Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park is most famous for the mountain for which the park shares its name. / It is a park that is also widely known for one of the great bushwalks of the world – the Overland Track. / In Winter 2007 I spent nine days traversing the entire park with all my camera gear. I was blessed with exceptional weather for that time of year. / This is one of the many images I captured from that journey. Carrying all that camera gear really is worth it! Emerald Paradise As Is… / Canon PowerShot S3 IS Rainbow Springs Florida’s third largest spring, Rainbow Springs pump 600 million gallons of water daily and serves as the head water to the pristine Rainbow River. The property was acquired by the State Park Service in 1990 and is slowly being allowed to revert to its natural state. / Beautiful floral gardens surround the spring, and the area is immensely popular in the spring when the azaleas are in bloom. The state also acquired Rainbow Springs State Campground, located nearby, which was formerly privately owned. From the campground, you can tube or canoe the crystalline waters of Rainbow River, or fish for large mouth bass and other freshwater species. / A nature trail provides a lovely walk past two waterfalls and the azalea gardens, and meanders along the Rainbow River. / /

I finally redid the HDR on this one. Hope everyone likes it. I totally dig it although the I kept the original darker one as my desktop picture (cause it looks great on my mac but apparently is too dark on a PC). Rock on all and let me know what you think. Seriously please critique this one for me. This photo has been driving me nuts since the original HDR was too dark. 5 exposure HDR processed in photomatix. Unsharp mask in GIMP. ~ Twin Falls ~ Trail head at Camp Orr in the Buffalo River Wilderness, Arkansas Usa. / The beautiful picturesque Twin Falls now has an added beauty right beside it due to all the rain we have had in the last month. Shot this photo in the pouring rain, using my uni pod, and with my camera on auto, and of course the umbrella was a must! LOL! It was quite the challenge steadying the camera, juggling the umbrella, all the while with the lightning flashing, and the forest canape swirling in the strong winds of the storm, which caused tornadoes in many surrounding areas. By the time I finished this shoot I was soaked to the bone, but this shot and the many others I shot were all worth every moment. BUT MY CAMERA REMAINED DRY!!!!!! / I am real happy with the silky water, as I have no means to set my camera for timed shots. / Taken 5-8-09

Part of the “Out of Place” series exploring the culture / nature divide – our alienation from nature. I find it perplexing just how easily we humans get mesmerised by work that is often intrinsically meaningless and the virtual world which seems mainly mired in trivia. It’s all the more strange when you consider that the bulk of humanity has only lived in cities for less than 100 years. Prior to that, for countless millennia the natural world was all we knew. / I spend hours in the Park and it’s interesting watching the way other people relate to it. For example, this set of falls is literally 1 minute off the main road through the Park. There are 3 sets of fall each more majestic than the one before. And yet the average amount of time that people spend here I’ve noticed is less than than 10 minutes. 10 minutes!! And then off home to get ready for work or to sit down and watch 4 hours of T.V. / I / just / don’t / get / it. / Still – one advantage – fewer people to bugger up my shots. / Anyway this is part of a series attempting to portray this collective psychosis of our species. Yes she is actually sitting there on top of a 30m waterfall – not photoshopped- very brave I thought, though we did take the wheels off the chair so she didn’t go sailing over. The bottom of the Upper Wattamolla Falls, Royal National Park. Can’t decide between the colour and the b/w. If you look very carefully you can see an angel in the middle of the falls in the coloured version but it disappears in the b/w – my daughter spotted it and I couldn’t see it for ages and then it just popped out at me. But I really like the contrast between the water and the rocks in the b/w so your feedback is most welcome Canon 30D Tv: 6 secs / Av: f/16 / ISO: 200 / FL: 62mm

The Marakoopa Cave, in the The Mole Creek Karst National Park, north/west Tasmania. The flowstone features in this cave are Breathtaking! There is 2 tours you can do in the caves, this is the lower one, there is also an upper one, which unfortunately I didn’t have time to do on this trip. The pool of water in this one is actually higher than the base of the cave at the back of the shot. This gives some real cool illusions. Canon 50D, 10mm. Found this beautiful stream on the walk up to The Marakoopa Cave, in the The Mole Creek Karst National Park, north/west Tasmania, Australia. This comes straight out of the cave, and is icy cold! Like a place, stuck in time, millions of years old. Canon 50D, 10mm. Available Large, and definately best viewed Large!

Worth clicking Large to see all the stars. 30 second exposure of a moving cloudbank backlit by the moon between two pinnacles in the Gardens of Stone National Park (isn’t that the coolest name for a NP?). Taken around midnight. First new landscape pic for a while. A friend invited me to another friend’s birthday in this amazing location. I’ve never been to this area on the other side of the Blue Mountains and was just gobsmacked as we drove down this valley with these majestic mountains rising on either side. I spotted this vantage point on the way in and as the party wore on snuck away to get some shots and was presented with this vista as I rolled up in the car. Managed to get about 15 mins in before it started to sleet. Man it was freezing with the wind coming off the late snow. The party was in an old art deco hotel being lovingly restored by this young couple and their six(!) children (oldest 11!!) Can’t believe the energy some people have or their vision. This hotel is located in a near-deserted old shale mining town at the end of a valley you can only access by dirt road about 4 hours from Sydney. It was all quite surreal – particularly when some of the girls at the party heard I was a photographer and decided they wanted to do a Norman Lindsay style “bacchanalia” photoshoot at the end of the night – just hilarious but OMG working with drunk models is hard work – “sit still”, “stop giggling” – never again! Still I managed to do both my favourite styles of photography in one night so it’s churlish to complain. Canon 1Ds Mk III / Tv: 30 secs / Av: f/3.2 / ISO: 1600

I searched the internet for a really long exposure of Tahquamenon Falls but couldn’t find one. So I figured that my first real shot with my new 10 stop filter would be of this amazing falls. This is a blend of 3 long exposure shots. The first one was 4 minutes, the correctly exposed one was 5 minutes and the bright one was 6 minutes. / Black and white to come soon. / Canon xsi / B+W nd 1000 / B+W CPL

Converted the color long exposure to LAB color and used the lightness channel as a base. Added a cooling filter to give it that icy cool. / Canon XSi / B+W nd1000 / B+W CPL
