  • Arlington West is an ongoing display of the casualties in Iraq on East Beach in Santa Barbara, to protest against the war in Iraq, and increase the public awareness regarding the military and political fallout of staying there. Each Sunday morning thousands of crosses, as the number of the fallen, for that day, are placed in the sand and volunteers are providing the public with up to the moment information on casualties plus individual stories on the fallen. This image was taken at memorial day 2007 as a tribute and memorial and as a cry for peace… The combination of the loss and hope for peace left a profound impact on me. / Eyal Nahmias First place: Personal meaning challenge @ Photography Challenge Group Featured: Photography Challenge Group, October 2009 / Featured: Male Photography Group, September 2009 / Featured: Street Photography and Photojournalism Group, January 2009 Nikon D70

  • Morning sun filters through the trees at John Olivers Cabin with a few dogwoods in the background…The cabin is almost completly surrounded by split-rail fence also…...The Oliver’s bought land in the Cove in 1826 and this cabin site remained in the family until the Park was established. The house is typical of many found on the eastern frontier in the mid-1850s, and reflects the skills and techniques brought into the mountains by descendants of British and European immigrants. This cabin is located on the Cades Cove Loop Road, in the Great Smoky Mountain N.P.

  • I have been here and seen the coming of man to my rivers. In my shadows have walked wildlife that no longer walk here. From my lofty peaks you can see for many miles. Once I stood higher than the far western mountains. I may have shifted and changed but I remain. My rivers are cold and my forest cool. From my bowels man has both feed himself and built his shelters. He has raped my slopes for my wood. Fought wars within me. I still survive. Mist still shroud my valleys. Flowers still shine their beauty for all to see. Come walk my paths an fish my streams. Stand on my peaks and walk my valleys. Loose yourself within yourself as your cares fade away when your with me. I am the Great Smoky Mountains, the Great Iron Mountains, Far Blue Mountains, the Sha-cona-ga. Most just call me the Smokies, and I remain. And a quote from John Muir “The mountains, are fountains, not only of rivers and fertile soil, but of men

  • Early mourning is so calming and peaceful. The fog that has shrouded the landscape is slowly lifting. Nature seems to be in slow motion and hush. Sit and enjoy what God has gave you. Let nature enfold completely, your whole being, completely covering you with its serenity……..Cades Cove GSMNP

  • Upper Yosemite Fall as seen from across one of the meadows in early spring. Yosemite National Park, California, is perhaps the world’s best known example of a glacier-carved canyon. Yosemite’s giant waterfalls, towering cliffs, rounded domes, and massive monoliths make it a natural marvel and one of the most visited places on Earth. Yosemite National Park is located in California’s Eastern Sierras. It is comprised of Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne Meadows, Glacier Point, and other high country wilderness areas. One of the main attractions of Yosemite are its majestic waterfalls. The main falls are Yosemite, Bridalveil, Vernal, Nevada, and Illilouette. The best time to visit the falls is in May since the water is gushing. Bridalveil usually has a neat rainbow in the afternoon.

  • “Agreeing on Peace, they uproot the tallest pine tree and into the cavity thereby made them caste all weapons of war. Into the depth of the Earth, down into the deep underneath currents of water flowing into unknown regions; we caste all weapons of war. We bury them from sight forever and plant again the tree. Eagle perches atop the tallest pine tree, forever called the Tree of Peace; in his talons he clutches 5 arrows (13 US) and a pine bough (olive branch/US).” From a version of the Iroquois Constitution, which was ultimately an influence at the meeting of the 13 colonies’ representatives in Albany in 1754, as Benjamin Franklin apealed for. It is even rumored and witnessed that there were several members of the Iroquois Confederacy upstairs while they wer drawing up the U.S. Constitution downstairs. • ~ Twin Falls ~ Trail head at Camp Orr in the Buffalo River Wilderness, Arkansas Usa. / The beautiful picturesque Twin Falls now has an added beauty right beside it due to all the rain we have had in the last month. Shot this photo in the pouring rain, using my uni pod, and with my camera on auto, and of course the umbrella was a must! LOL! It was quite the challenge steadying the camera, juggling the umbrella, all the while with the lightning flashing, and the forest canape swirling in the strong winds of the storm, which caused tornadoes in many surrounding areas. By the time I finished this shoot I was soaked to the bone, but this shot and the many others I shot were all worth every moment. BUT MY CAMERA REMAINED DRY!!!!!! / I am real happy with the silky water, as I have no means to set my camera for timed shots. / Taken 5-8-09

  • Toddler leaning on soldier’s gravestone at a National Military Cemetery in the United States. This is one of those moments when I felt I was destined to be at this place at this moment in time. Nikon F3, 300mm f2.8 EDAF lens, Kodachrome 25

  • Part of the “Out of Place” series exploring the culture / nature divide – our alienation from nature. I find it perplexing just how easily we humans get mesmerised by work that is often intrinsically meaningless and the virtual world which seems mainly mired in trivia. It’s all the more strange when you consider that the bulk of humanity has only lived in cities for less than 100 years. Prior to that, for countless millennia the natural world was all we knew. / I spend hours in the Park and it’s interesting watching the way other people relate to it. For example, this set of falls is literally 1 minute off the main road through the Park. There are 3 sets of fall each more majestic than the one before. And yet the average amount of time that people spend here I’ve noticed is less than than 10 minutes. 10 minutes!! And then off home to get ready for work or to sit down and watch 4 hours of T.V. / I / just / don’t / get / it. / Still – one advantage – fewer people to bugger up my shots. / Anyway this is part of a series attempting to portray this collective psychosis of our species. Yes she is actually sitting there on top of a 30m waterfall – not photoshopped- very brave I thought, though we did take the wheels off the chair so she didn’t go sailing over. Model: Jacqui S / Photography / art direction: Geoff Canon 1Ds MkIII / Tv: 1.6 secs / Av: f/22 / ISO: 100 / FL: 24mm

  • Image created for and inspired by a vision shared with me by my spirit sister POLLY PEACOCK whose writing accompanies this collaboration, along with our shared favorite song… Wakan Tanka – O Great Mystery – ENIGMA I hold up my maker, to walk when my Maker no longer can, because we both must continue to walk the walk. / I convey words with images of honesty, truth and pride, because they must be shared. / I wear colors of the four corners to honor the coming of Mother Earth’s seasons and many and varied reasons. / I carry a sacred White Wankan Tanka to help me receive visions out of pure necessity. / I am made from an old Sycamore Tree, which speaks tales of old, just as my Maker does. / I have a limb that was torn and broken when my Maker made me; this represents my Maker’s honor of imperfection and humility; I was mended to represent the love and healing that my Maker carries for others. / I am filled with knots, which represent life’s many imbalances; this is so that my Maker may seek harmony in order to live contentedly with frequent imbalances. / I have been woven, braided and wrapped with valued leather and branches from a Weeping Willow Tree; this is to protect my Maker’s inner child and to honor the sacred animals that perished before my Maker and me; the sanctity and blessings of these animals are never wasted among my Maker’s people. / I am hand painted and untouched by a pen or pencil; these were once the most formidable weapons of my Maker’s Ancestors and Elders. / I carry feathers of the Bald Eagle, Goose, Peacock, Doves, and many other winged creatures to remind my Maker to fly high and rise above all storms, to swim with great speed, to honor Grandfather’s teachings and to live for inner peace; these are the things that my Maker shares with those beings who are willing to accept them. / My feathers are proudly decorated with beads of Mother Nature to represent my Maker’s love and respect for all of Daughter Earth’s treasured gems. / I am thrust up into the air by my Maker’s right arm, straight and tall; my Maker cries a primal scream for Creator to send the bright light of the Universe to heal those who are in pain; my Maker then welcomes the light from Creator, who ignites Father Sun, Mother Moon to illuminate and bathe Daughter Earth to spread sacred light; this healing also provides my maker with spirit, innocence, wisdom, integrity, humility and purity; this is one of many visions that my Maker’s sees, feels, trusts and believes. / I wear a broad smile; my Maker cherishes laughter medicine as one of the finest of all. / I dance ritual dances with my Maker; my Maker feels the rhythm of the drums and the heart and soul of songs sung; this stirs and moves my Maker into thoughtless being. / I touch those who would hurt my Maker to accept a challenge if necessary, but my Maker prefers to restore peace. / I am made from Mother Nature with my Maker’s great respect for Creator’s Universe, Father Sun, Mother Moon and Daughter Earth; this is so all beings can live together as one people. / I stand tall and proud as my Maker gazes into Creator’s Universe, during the darkness of each night, praying for universal love, truth, justice, honor, and peace; I represent my Maker’s respect for the equality, healing and energy of all living things. / I am the Coup Stick of my Maker’s visions and realities, which have been lovingly bestowed upon my Maker, by Creator; this is so that my Maker may continue to walk in peace, while immersed in Father Sun, Mother Moon and Daughter Earth’s beauty.
