  • The Buttes at Monument Valley are immediately recognisable icons of the American south west. Taken just prior to sunset with a Nikon D70 751 Views on the 5th Nov 2009

  • This image of the Right Mitten framed in between two rocks shows the shadow of the Left Mitten falling across it. The Sky was doing some amazing things behind me and I noticed that most people had truned for the sunset. I steedfast remained shooting into the park. The change in colour taking place in the Valley as the sunset came closer was amazing. The right rock is slightly burned in but I am not one to play in Layers. This is a 3 image HDR given only a slight adjustment. The resulting image was then processed in CS3 with a slight adjustment to straighten the horizion and curves to add a little extra contrast. All 3 images to make the HDR were shot with a Nikon D70 Featured in That One Great Shot / Featured in Top Shelf Wildlife & Nature Art ! / Featured in Mornings and Evenings / Featured in American Southwest / Featured in Dimensions 588 views on the 5th Nov 2009

  • Glacier National Park, USA. It was one of those mornings when you could have heard a pin drop the air was so still. I heard a slight splash, and next thing a Beaver swam across the Lake right in front of me ! Absolutely the icing on the cake for me, though I know plenty who view the critter as a real nuisance ! Since I had the wide lens on the camera , I didn’t get a shot of it, but, what the heck , the light was playing my game on this day ! We also spotted a Black bear on the slopes of the mountain across the lake to my right. A day to cherish. Shot on a CANON EOS 40D, with polarising filter attached, and mounted on a tripod,. f22, 1/6sec, underexposed by one stop, iso 100, RAW file, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW, further adjustments in PS CS3, Levels, Curves, and finished with LAB colour. Moulton barn on Mormon Row was one of them. I stopped by the barn a couple of times, took some shots and my many visits finally paid off when I saw a buffalo herd grazing peacefully very close to the barn. I waited a little bit for them to come close enough so I could include one of them in this shot. / This beautiful, old homestead brings memories of the past but a wild buffalo roaming free makes it even more special. Taken in Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming, USA Canon XSi w/18-55mm lens, f/6.3, 1/250 sec, ISO-200, 36mm.

  • Hurricane Ridge, Olympic NP, Washington state, USA. / Feeling the need to get away from the traffic below, we drove up to this viewpoint one evening, on a road trip through Washington State and Oregon, the Pacific North West of the USA. There weren’t too many folk up there, just a few black-tailed deer for company. I just loved those misty layers. It was a great way to end the day ! I shot this on my CANON EOS 20D, with my Tamron 28-300mm lens, set at 55mm, polarising filter, on tripod, f8, 1/250sec, iso 100, Auto WB, RAW file processed in Photoshop CS3. I cooled the image down by reducing the colour temperature to make it more blue, the rest was just levels/curves adjustments. / I used a relatively wide aperture to keep the image on the soft side, enhancing the misty layers. / FEATURED IN / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/mountains-and-light / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/fine-art-of-landscape-photography / /

  • Published in DIGITAL PHOTO magazine. There exists a whole row of abandoned buildings along Mormon Row, a phtotgraphic delight, if you don’t mind sharing it with a whole bunch of other photographers ! Deservedly popular , backed up as it is by the amazing Teton mountain range. The town of Jackson is nearby. / The Mormon people were evicted when the National Park was created. I decided to give this the HDR and Orton treatment, to bring out the texture of the wood, and add a little drama to the scene. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D,mounted on tripod, polarising filter, iso 100, f22, 1/30 sec, cloudy WB, RAW file, processed in Photomatix, with further adjustments in PS CS3, and a little Orton applied. Finished with LAB colour to oomph it up a bit ! • Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Driving along the park road early one morning, there was a small dip in the road where the early morning mist had lingered. I frantically shot as much as I could, knowing it would rapidly vanish with the sun getting higher in the sky. It was so unbelievably beautiful, I felt like I was dreaming ! / A very magical five minutes that is forever etched in my memory. / The tree skeletons are relics of that huge fire in the Eighties. I shot on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, polarising filter attached, iso 100, Auto WB, f22, 1/15 sec, RAW file processed in Adobe Camera Raw, then CS3, with selective levels and curves adjustments, also selective colour. Other than that, the shot kinda took itself ! • Taken in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, USA. Bryce is so amazing, all those rock pinnacles thrusting upwards from the deep canyon, with such amazing colours, and some of them look like they are candy coated ! I got very lucky here, the past few days around Bryce had been real stormy, and the park was closed the day before ! Just a matter of setting up the tripod and waiting for the ‘right’ moment ! It snowed later on in the day ! This was taken on a Ricoh KR10 super, on Fuji Velvia slide film, asa 50. Probably f22, I can’t be sure. I scanned the slide with my Nikon Coolscan VED, and edited in PS CS3, a little tidying with the spot removal tool was necessary, and a little reduction of ‘noise’. • The Giant Redwood National Park, California, USA, contains the tallest living things on earth, evergreen trees that grow to 350 feet. For me personally, not the most beautiful tree, biggest isn’t always best, but it is pretty overwhelming and magical to walk through on one of the many popular trails that exist here, and to gaze upwards, a neck-breaking experience ! I feel they are best seen in the mist, adding an air of mystery ! / My fave trees ? The Scots Pine and the Silver Birch of course ! Shot on my Canon EOS 20D,mounted on tripod, f11, 1 sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in Photomatix, single file pseudo HDR, adjusted in Adobe Camera RAW, then in CS3 I applied the Orton effect to emphasise the textures on the trunks, reducing the opacities for the final result. • The Moulton Barn, Mormon Row, Teton National Park, Jackson, Wyoming, USA. I got up early for this one, I had travelled thousands of miles to see it, had only one morning to get my shot in the bag – and what did I find ? / A film crew shooting an advert ! Along with a battalion of other photographers, I was champing at the ‘bit’, since we weren’t allowed to shoot in case we captured the models – male and female – the whole darned thing was so artificial !! So, when there was a lull in shooting, I crept under a bush and hastily ‘snapped’ my shot. Maybe I should pursue a career in the ‘Paparazzi ??!!! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D with polarising filter attached, mounted very hastily on my tripod, Canon efs 18-55mm lens set at 45mm, underexposed by half a stop, f 27, 1/20 sec, auto wb, iso 100, RAW file developed as much as possible in Adobe Camera Raw, then in PS CS3, selective Levels/Curves, saturation of colours achieved with LAB colour, then the tiniest amount of Orton applied, to ‘pop’ the textures of the wood and grass. • Mesa Arch, in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, faces east and is a perfect location for a dramatic sunrise image. The clouds blocked the horizon at sunrise, but my patience was rewarded when the sun suddenly broke through a small gap in the clouds for a brief moment.

  • Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Pretty much a tourist snapshot of the Falls, which I thought I would share with you ! / A rather crowded place, justifiably so, who wouldn’t want to see this sight ? The Canyon has some amazing colours, and I found the best time was towards evening to be viewed at it’s best. The vertiginous slopes are very loose and crumbly, and I wondered how those trees maintain their perilous foothold !! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, polariser, tripod, f22, 1/3 sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in PS CS3, levels/curves/selective colour adjustments.
