Fog slowly lifts from the coves floor. Dawn has awakened all of nature to a new day. The coolness of night still lingers. The dew clings to all it has touched for it knows its time has come to leave. Chobe River, Botswana After spending the evening cruising down the Chobe River we found a herd of elephants gradually moving toward us, coming closer and closer to the river bank. There were in excess of 20 of them in the herd, and this lot were the first to make it to the waters edge for a drink together. Given it was a 43 degree day, I think they needed it! I had the awesome fortune this afternoon of spending about an hour with Brother Coyote. At one point he was no further than 4 feet from me, and I could hear him breath, as my heart beat in time with his. He honored me with his presence and was completely accepting of mine (Moraine Park region of the Rocky Mtn. Nat’l Pk, Colorado) / /

Some school children climbing Haytor, Dartmoor Devon. For those who don’t know the Devon and Cornwall moors are famous for their tors. A tor is a rock outcrop formed by weathering, usually found on or near the summit of a hill. In the South West of England, where the term originated, it is also a word used for the hills themselves – particularly the high points of Dartmoor in Devon and Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Tors are composed usually of granite or metamorphic rocks. Tors can also be found around any previously erupted volcanoes (although Devonian and Carboniferous outcrops are also found), though occasionally of other hard rocks such as quartzite, and are the result of millions of years of weathering. In prehistoric times, when the land was covered in forest, rain water seeped into the ground and gradually weathered the bedrock through its natural cracks, or joints. Once the land became exposed, the weathering was accelerated, particularly during the Ice age when freezing water expanded in the cracks. The result can be seen today in dramatic rock formations.
