  • This road leads to the Elkmont area in the Smoky Mountains, Tennessee, USA

  • While it’s possible to be disappointed by the hordes of thronging tourists, I don’t think it’s possible to overplay the spectacular natural beauty of Yosemite Valley. I have travelled in over 40 countries and found few places that rival it for jaw-dropping-ness. Again I was blessed with perfect light this morning, catching the early sunlight kissing the faces of the rock around Yosemite Falls, that vibrant spring green of the meadows, and the swollen water as it tumbled down the cliff-face. I spent less than 24 hours in the park, and I ache to head back there someday and spend some proper time there, because it really took my heart… May 2007.

  • Yosemite National Park, California, USA

  • Aspens on Lake Peak, Pecos Wilderness, New Mexico, USA.

  • Featured in “AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat” – June 2009. A very narrow slot canyon appropriately named Spooky Gulch twists and turns for several hundred meters through a dry desert landscape. Its walls tower many meters overhead while the opening in front of you seems to get smaller and smaller. Those hikers that are both brave and thin enough to fit through will find that they are able to make it to the opposite side. At its narrowest point, the little canyon is only about 30 centimeters wide! [Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument website] [Spooky Gulch info and photos] / Copyright © 2004 Brian W. • Morning sun filters through the trees at John Olivers Cabin with a few dogwoods in the background…The cabin is almost completly surrounded by split-rail fence also…...The Oliver’s bought land in the Cove in 1826 and this cabin site remained in the family until the Park was established. The house is typical of many found on the eastern frontier in the mid-1850s, and reflects the skills and techniques brought into the mountains by descendants of British and European immigrants. This cabin is located on the Cades Cove Loop Road, in the Great Smoky Mountain N.P.

  • The colorful glory of the Painted Hills in the John Day Fossil Bed National park in beautiful Oregon. Actually, this part is even before the official park part. Beautifully complimented by a threatening sky, the sun coming out just at the right time for our visit to this magical place. Only a little over 24 hours after our first total loss accident, and just a few hours before that sky would unleash its wrath upon us causing the second. Like I said in my journal, it was an eventful holiday.

  • The Utah Prairie Dog is the smallest species of prairie dog, a member of the squirrel family of rodents native to the south central steppes of the US state of Utah. Like all prairie dogs, the Utah Prairie Dog is an active forager, eating a wide array of vegetation including grasses, flowers, and seeds. They build extensive “towns” of underground tunnels and chambers, each town composed of a population of members of an extended prairie dog family. Many other species make use of their burrows, including owls, snakes, and other rodents. source: wikipedia

  • Yosemite Valley, California, taken in Northern California. / Canon Powershot SD200 Not just a great Valley… / but a shrine to human foresight, strength of granite, power of glaciers, the persistence of life, and the tranquility of the High Sierra. / Yosemite National Park, one of the first wilderness parks in the United States, is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more. / / / /

  • Named “mako sica” (Badlands ) by the Lakota, the South Dakota Badlands were a Native American hunting grounds for thousands of years. • This Panoramic image of Monument Vallley was constructed in CS3 with 5 seperate images. There was a slight interuption between the left and right side of the image hense the slightly varied lighting. BUT the overall image I find amazing. / Taken with the Nikon D70.

  • TOP 10 in the Planet Earth challenge in Mood & Ambience. / FEATURED in the First Things Group.

  • Death Valley National Park, USA / / The Ubehebe Crater system contains several volcanic craters, cinder cones and ash hills, all resulting from an explosive steam eruption approx. 2,000 years ago, when rising magma met an underground lake. Ubehebe is by far the largest crater, 2,400 feet in diameter and 500 feet deep and presents a very colorful spectacle with variegated, buckled strata around its sides and grey-black ash on the rim. A slippery climb with an awesome view !

  • Here is another of my extensive images of Monument Valley. I seem to have gone nuts that day with the shutter, but I have quite a number of good images to show for it. This image has been processed from 2 RAW shots, in Photomatix and given a light HDR effect. They were then stiched in CS3 and given final adjustments in curves and a light crop to make the image complete. The photo’s were taken with a Nikon D70. I can’t wait to return and shoot the Valley again with my D300. Just have to find the time…

  • markgoff.redbubble.com / Glacier National Park is a land of high-mountain adventure, a land that sets the senses soaring. Here you’ll find lofty mountain ranges with sculptured glacial valleys, ice cold lakes that mirror mountains and sky, wildflowers and wildlife flourishing in alpine meadows and prairie grasslands. These exquisite elements make up Glacier National Park in the state of Montanna in the United States. I first visited this park in the Year 2000. I’ve been going back regularly ever since. It captured my heart and imagination and is easily one of my favorite locations on earth.

  • Colorado River in Grand Canyon after rain. The day before water was blue, after rain is always red. A view of the Marble Canyon and the Colorado River from Navajo Bridge Captured with Nikon D70. Featured in All Countries ~ Wetlands, Ponds, Lakes and Rivers group 04/07/2009

  • Cable Mill House in Cades Cove, Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. There are Sorgum Syrup demonstrations on how it was made here, and sold at the Visitor Centers and Outlets in the Smokies. The Mill House has Corn Mill for sell to help the Park. / – Family gave up land to make the National Parks and they have been much inspiration for my art and photography. oil painting by Jeffee Gourley, Artist post cards.

  • A buffalo trying to cross the hot geyser area in Yellowstone NP and wanting to come on the boardwalk!! I don’t think so! / Most were lying sprawled out while the steam issued around them – the ground was encrusted and hot – obviously perfect for their sunbathing !!

  • Shot in the Lamar Valley, YELLOWSTONE National Park, USA. A lucky grab-shot. / I had spotted the Cottonwoods and wanted to capture the beautiful colours of Fall against the shadowy hill behind, then I saw the Male Bison emerge from the trees. He had a mission on his mind, a couple of females across the river, LOL !! (out of sight of this shot.) He was moving pretty quickly, and luckily I had my short telephoto lens already attached to the camera ! A magical moment and experience !! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, set on Landscape mode, Aperture Priority, with polarising filter, hand-held, iso 200, f 6.7, 1/180 sec , underexposed by one stop because of the dark shadowy hill , Auto WB ( I mostly use this), lens was my Canon EF 75-300mm set at 200mm (don’t have this lens anymore) RAW file, processed in Adobe Camera Raw, then tweaked in PS CS3, with selective Levels/Curves, and selective colour adjustments. • Yellowstone National Park, USA. / I think maybe that when you visit Yellowstone, it feels like you are on another planet, nothing seems for real ! / The colours and ‘scapes are outlandish, like Mother Nature flipped out ! Weird and wonderful ! / It can be difficult to photograph – the wind was blowing the hot steam towards me very often, fogging up the lens, making everything very wet, not good with those electronics ! / ( I was told that the moisture from the steam can actually etch the lens, so be warned !) / The other problem is folk passing by making the boardwalk bounce around, shaking the tripod…......LOL !! / Fall is a great time to visit, a bit crowded, but those colours really zing out, and the steam is intensified by the cold Autumn air. / Oh to be there in Winter….............. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, hand held, f13, 1/90 sec, at 49mm, iso 100, auto wb, polarising filter, RAW file, processed in PS CS3, levels/curves, selective colour adjustments, finished with LAB colour and Intellisharpen. • Another image from Yellowstone National Park , Wyoming, on our holiday from last Autumn. (2008) / West Thumb Geyser basin is on the shores of Yellowstone Lake, and is a kaleidoscope of colours, like Mother Nature went crazy with Photoshop !! Boardwalks go in various directions, and it is a hard choice, which way shall I go ??!! I chose to ‘follow the light’ / and Mother Nature gave me a helping hand with a sky straight from my dreams ! / I hope you enjoy this one ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, hand held, polarising filter, f11, 1/60sec, auto wb, RAW file processed in CS3, levels/curves/selective colour etc. FEATURED IN…....... / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/focus-and-lighting / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/streams-brooks-creeks SEE MORE OF MY USA SET HERE… >
