In February 2009, this image placed third in the U.S. Parks Wildlife Shots challenge hosted by the AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat group. A thousand Yellowstone wonders are calling, ‘Look up and down and round about you! John Muir – 1898 The temperatures were in the single digits on this cold, snowy January morning at West Thumb Geyser Basin, which is one of the smallest geyser basins in Yellowstone. A incredibly scenic area along the shore of Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb only has a small amount of geyser activity. However, the basin more than makes up for it with its diversity. Despite its small size, it has paint/mud pots, hot springs, pools, lake shore geysers, and fumaroles. Fumaroles are small openings that release steam and other gasses. You can see in the foreground the muddy, soupy waters inundating the paint pots. The white area beyond the tree line in the right hand side of the photograph is Yellowstone Lake. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. GOOD FRIDAY MAMMATUS / Photo best viewed large. / / / / / / FEATURED WORKS / “GOOD FRIDAY MAMMATUS” was FEATURED in the group #1 ARTISTS OF RED BUBBLE / / / I took this photo of Mammatus on a Good Friday before Easter in Ashland, Kentucky. The clouds first started rolling in and looked like fluffy white marshmallows. Then in front of the setting sun they dramatically began to change colors. They went from snow white to shades of silvers, pinks, grays, blues and even purples! The colors were quite striking and dramatic; these clouds were nothing like anything I had ever seen before! For a few minutes they turned very dark, and it was a sight I will never forget!! These amazing mammatus clouds lasted about 45 minutes before they exited my area. / / / We were under our second tornado watch of the year, and I found out later that I was standing right under the anvil of a severe thunderhead and that a tornado could have formed at any moment! Luckily for me it didn’t, and I was able to capture some phenomenal, amazing clouds. I can’t quite put it into words other than to say, “I closed my eyes for a few seconds and felt like I had been kissed on my cheek by an angel.” This was one time in my life that I will always remember!!! / / / This photograph of “GOOD FRIDAY MAMMATUS” has won National awards, been published in an Anthology, and has been shown on National television. This image is also featured in several websites and blogs throughout the USA and Australia for educational purposes. / / /

/ I just got back from spending the last 3 days on Mt. Rainier and had to process one image before I go to bed. Every visitor to the park has an image of Mt. Rainier from this view point at Reflection Lake but not too many are willing to be on the mountain before sunrise to catch the first rays of the sun. This is my verson of everyone’s photograph of Mount Rainier at Reflection Lake. This image was processed as a HDR image.

This is Denali, also known as Mt. McKinley, taken by my mate-for-life, Howard Marsh, in 2003. Denali is within Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, some six million acres of wild land with one ribbon of road. Most visitors travel by old, old hard-seat school buses, or ride bicycles or hike. That road is closed to vehicles in order to prevent the effects of too much carbon monoxide, too many people, too much risk to the wildlife. Even air traffic is moderately restricted, although some say not enough restrictions are in place to preserve the peace and quiet. Once a year in the fall, the road opens to a select number of lottery winners. I had done some technical editing and layout work for Denali National Park that year, and was given a vehicle pass. A rare gift. Denali is considered the crowning jewel of the park as North America’s highest peak – an awe-inspiring, 20,320 foot wonder. Mountains and Mountain Light featured – Thank you! This is Delaney’s Hut in Kosciuszko National Park. This one sits just off the Snowy Mountains Highway so an easy one to access. Unfortunately the original hut was lost in the 2003 bushfires, but has since been rebuilt. This is my 5th attempt to shoot this hut, every other time I’ve come past it I’ve had bright blue skies and it’s been lunchtime, so the light was just too harsh to get a decent photo. This time though, it was lunchtime again, but we had snow and some very menacing black clouds with the sun just breaking behind me, so the perfect light…. well in my eyes! Photo was taken 27th April 2009

The Fenland Trail in the morning affords a good opportunity to see wildlife moving around the marsh and river areas. This trail connects to the Bow River Trail which actually goes all the way into Banff townsite proper. If you have time, this is a nice easy walk to get to this area without actually having to drive to get to it. The Vermillion Lakes are slightly to the west of the Fenland Trail and you can either walk to them or drive your car and use the pulloffs available. It’s a bit noisy being so close to the Trans Canada Hwy, but the scenery more than makes up for it. Throughout the day you’ll see numerous waterfowl frequenting the area. The real draw, however, is in the evening when the winds are low and the water is still, making the lake surface a mirror reflection of the now beautifully lit Mt Rundle in the background. A visit to Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, Canada in early June afforded me a chance to capture this 2 image composite. Just a couple weeks prior, the lake was still frozen solid.
