Built in the 1890’s. It started housing prisoners in 1898. It has 800 cells. It has a 20 ft. rock wall around it that was 3 feet thick. The prisoners were made to work for their keep. The state took contracts from private companies to run factories inside the prison walls using convicts as the labor. / There are so many stories within these walls. There have been riots, fires, and escapes. It was closed in 1989. In 1992 a federal judge ordered that it will never be used to hold prisoners again. It is starting to crumble in places. Windows are broken out and the roofs are falling in. / It is said to be haunted. / While I was there, crows and vultures were everywhere. It has been used in several movies and music videos. / Some of the films shot on location at the Tennessee State Prison: / • TNA Wrestling promo, 2006 / • The Furnace, 2006, Melee Entertainment / • Walk The Line, 2004, 20th Century Fox / • Civil Brand, 2001, Lions Gate / • The Last Castle, 2001, DreamWorks Production / • The Green Mile, 1998, Castle Rock Entertainment / • Letter From Death Row, 1997, Sheen/Michaels Entertainment / • Last Dance, 1996, Touchstone Pictures / • Against the Wall (TV), 1994, Araba Films for HBO / • Marie, 1984, De Laurentiis Entertainment/MGM

Gryphon (or Griffin) / In ancient times it was considered the protector of the divine. The creature was seen in civilisations as early as the Minoan civilisation (2700BC to 1450 BC). / This is on the roof of the Nashville Parthenon. / Nashville’s Parthenon was the centerpiece of the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition fair. A number of buildings at the Exposition were based on ancient originals. However, the Parthenon was the only one to have been conceived as an exact reproduction of the Athens Parthenon. It was also the only one to have been preserved by the city. (The Knights of Pythias building was purchased and moved to nearby Franklin, TN.) / Originally built of plaster, wood, and brick, the Parthenon was rebuilt in the 1920s on the same foundations, but with concrete. / Today, the Parthenon, functions as an art museum.
