  • Fort Amherst is located at the entrance of St. John’s Harbor opposite Signal Hill across the Narrows’. The Fort was built in the 1770’s to defend the entrance of the Narrows’. Gun placements were used at The Fort during WWII to protect the harbor from German U-boats. In 1813 a lighthouse was built at Fort Amherst and was to be the first permanent lighthouse established in Newfoundland. It operated until 1835 but was then replaced by a new structure in 1852, which was demolished in the early 1950’s to make way for the new lighthouse which is seen today. / More in this series / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography

  • A beautiful misty sunrise, in the glorious Blue Mountains! Taken South-West of Katoomba along Narrow Neck Ridge. Aligned perfectly with the sun rising directly over the three sisters, and echo point at the southern end of Katoomba. Although they are not recognisable here, they are hiding in the glare! The tall pines are probably the biggest give away! I hope you like the shot, I battled the cold to capture this one :)

  • This shot is one from my archives. I took this along one of the many walks in North Yorkshire. This was a narrow path continuing on down to the road that the group crossed and continued on to the coast near Robin Hood’s Bay. What a vantage point. The dry stone wall was the focus of my shot. It is a dying art to build dry stone walls, dating back hundreds of years. This wall has probably been standing here for at least hundred or more years I would guess. • Verrazano-Narrows Bridge When it opened in 1964, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the world’s longest suspension span. The ends of the bridge are at historic Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, both of which guarded New York Harbor at the Narrows for over a century. The bridge was named after Giovanni da Verrazano, who, in 1524, was the first European explorer to sail into New York Harbor. Its monumental 693 foot high towers are 1 5/8 inches farther apart at their tops than at their bases because the 4,260 foot distance between them made it necessary to compensate for the earth’s curvature. Each tower weighs 27,000 tons and is held together with three million rivets and one million bolts. Seasonal contractions and expansions of the steel cables cause the double-decked roadway to be 12 feet lower in the summer than in the winter. High Tide Clearance is 228 feet. • This was taken along the hike up the Virgin River Narrows that run through Zion Canyon and National Park. In the early morning hours most of the light is diffuse, and reflected, making it ideal for photography. Carrying two cameras, tripod and a bag of lenses, and tromping up stream was a real challenge, every once in a while there would be a stop along the way, like this one that allowed me to take a few shots.

  • Mother deer with her two fawns drinking water along the shore of Lake of the Woods, Ontario.

  • Taken in Wells Gray Provincial Park, Clearwater BC Canada. Taken using the pop filter on my camera. About an hour and a half hike during which I forced my husband to sing with me…...wanted to scare any black bears away.

  • I committed for a whole year to make images at the Narrows Bridge. After nine months I am amazed that I can still find new and interesting images. I hope that by imersing myself in a setting and working hard (20 visits this year) I can begin to see. This was made last weekend, as the sun’s position changes as it rises the low sunlight illuminates different parts of the bridge supports.
