  • Can you notice something yellow and something black in the distance? This is the island of Naoshima in Japan, known as an island of contemporay art. Two famous art galleries by Ando Tadao are built there: the Chichu Art museam and the Benesse Hotel Art Museam. This shot was taken from the balcony of the Benesse, and just behind the balcony inside is a painting of a beach with a yellow boat and a black boat; which was originally meant to go with the actual yellow and black boat seen here as one piece of work, but eventually they made another set of boats, and put them in front of the painting. If I had not run into the tourguide I would have not noticed the boats on the beach. If you look closer; you can also to a tiny white photo frame placed smack dab on a hill (there were several of these photo frames displayed in the balcony area; sorry if you can’t see them here; they are much more clear in the actual photo)

  • This is taken from the balcony of the Benesse Hotel Museum in Naoshima, Japan. The photos on the walls are of ocean shots taken around the world; and they are positioned so that when looking out to the landscape, the water horizon lines up with the horizon in the photos. And there was more to see at this spot: /

Benesse Art Site There is a contemporary museum called Benesse museum, and resort hotel. Chichu museum (Chishu means underground) is built world known Japanese architect Tadao Ando, and it shows Monet, Walter De Maria, and James Turrell. And there are permanent show of the public art on the outside and inside of the old Japanese residences. The Yayoi Kusama’s red pumpkin is at the ferry terminal, and it seems like the symbol of the island. I expected it that more quiet island, but there were millions of visiter, art students, European visiters, etc, so it was more like Hawaii. (but it is much smaller version)
