Emma and I struggled to name this work. It contains images from Nanjing (night city scene), Singapore (sunglasses, ice cream, lighted dragon), the state of Maine, USA, and a Bryce software program volcano, and a Kai’s Power Tools fractal design backed by outer space stars from another Kai program. Whew! So much! But, the sense was a feeling of exuberance, hope, opportunity, energy, determination, energy – all seen and felt by Emma and I in our life together – love of life and each other. Take a look through Emma’s Sunglasses and enjoy life! Cover page for China Signs Calendar Signs in China – where we were for some time – the second from the right bottom row Chinese script means safety or security. I love this, because the ‘roof’ on top indicated the home, and the portion on bottom means woman or mother. Hence, safety/security is mother at home. These photos were taken in the Confucius Temple in Nanjing. The stone carving is of one of his disciples, seven others were here as well. These may be published at some later date.
December page for China Signs Calendar Look closely at the Chinese Characters for female and male, in the central image to the left. These first caught my attention during our trip to China, as I sought to understand a few of the hundreds of thousands of Chinese characters available. The female one shows a person standing cross-legged, and the male one, someone running. Easy to remember, once you can see the ‘picture’. The female character is used in many places, often with its meaning changed through the addition of other lines and elements, but it can be interesting to search for it, then seek a translation. My method was to photograph then ask an English speaking Chinese for its meaning. “Secure” or “Safe” is the female character under a roof – this depicts the “family home” and its associated safety. Neat, eh? / The photo collage of essential signs is set before the many steps in Nanjing, leading up to the mausoleum of the father of modern China, Dr Sun Yat-Sen, who brought about the demise of Imperial rule in China. / Often during our Chinese adventure, we searched for the signs on the left, and this picture recalls the many long and arduous journeys looking for….
Throughout China, signs are used to inform, guide and regulate. As an English speaker, some of these tickled my sense of humour, however I could never rise to the challenge of writing signs in Chinese. I wanted to share some of these with you. / I photographed signs in Xian, Fengdu, Nanjing, Huan Shan, Nanjing, Chengdu and Shanghai, and have placed them in context with scenes from the same areas. / Public signs help us understand the writers and what they seek to achieve. In this way we can gain further empathy with the Chinese people. I trust you enjoy this calendar – through buying one for yourself, and viewing it each day, in full living color, throughout the year. / Each individual image (with specific comments about it) is also available for purchase on RedBubble. Reading the Signs in China is my first foray into Calendar creating, after being inspired other wonderful RedBubble members such as Byron and Karin. / I took thousands of photos during a recent visit that saw us spend 9 days sailing up the Yangtze River (third longest river in the world, and responsible for over 300,000 drownings during flood time in recorded history) from Shanghai, beyond the Three Gorges Dam Project to the city of Chongqing, with over 33 million residents. That is BIG. We then bussed across to the earthquake ravaged area of Chengdu to see the beautiful Pandas, flew to Xian, one of China’s oldest cities to witness the eighth wonder of the world, the Terra Cotta Army, then on to Beijing, arriving immediately after the close of the Para-Olympic Games. / From these photos I have condensed 13 for this calendar, using as a linking theme, the many signs we read printed in English and Chinese, some of which tickled our collective sense of humor as we worked our way through the “chinglish” messages. / I hope you enjoy this Calendar. / I have also published each of the pages separately, for those who would like to purchase some of these individually. Links to these may be found on the Calendar page. / Keith
The Confucius Temple in Nanjing was originally constructed in the year of 1034 in the Song Dynasty. It was a place to worship and consecrate Confucius, the great philosopher and educator of ancient China. It is also known as Fuzimiao in Chinese. This temple suffered repeated damage and has been rebuilt on several occasions since that time. 1937 was the most destruction when it was burnt to ruin by Japanese aggressors. In 1984 the temple was rebuilt under the support of the local government. During the long process, the original building expanded to be a complex building in the architectural style of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, including the Confucius Temple itself, the Jiangnan Gongyuan (the place of imperial examinations) and the Xue Gong (the Imperial Academy). The complex is still called the Confucius Temple out of habit by locals and visitors. Each of the diciples helped Confucius according to their skills, that varied from one to the other. They stand on either side of the walk through the temple area leading to the elevated temple building.
