  • KOSHARI (Also known as Koshare, Koyala, Hano, and Tewa) Kosharis or variants of them may be found in most of the pueblos. Although their primary function is one of amusement for the audience during pauses in katsina (kachina) dancing or as a leavening for the seriousness of a major ceremony, clowns are considered both sacred and profane. Easily recognizable by the black and white stripes painted over his entire body.  He is ususally shown in a humorous pose.  He is the joker who rings happiness to others.  /   / Clown Katsinas provide amusement during Katsina ceremonies.  Clowns are often shown with watermelons and behave in the ususal manner of pueblo clowns, engaging in loud and boisterous conversation, immoderate actions, and gluttony.  Clowns participate as drummers for dances. / In the Hopi tradition, the Sacred Clown Katsina frequently disrupts rituals.  The clown satirizes Hopi life by acting out and exaggerating improper behavior…many times the Koshari’s actions are meant to portray a lesson on the behavior apparent in a tribal member.  Their purpose is to show that overdoing anything is bad not only for the individual, but for the rest of the tribe as well. Kosharis play tricks, act out absurd pantomines, or mimic spectators.  Similar to the more serious Katsinas, but with humor, the clown helps maintain community harmony by reminding the people of the acceptable standards of behavior within the Hopi community.

  • Photomontage – watercolour background with photographed textures and parts of various images to create a feeling of age and atmosphere. I’ve always felt spiritually `at home’ in Greece (particularly Crete)

The FALCON represents aspiration, spirit, light and liberty. / In Peru, the falcon appears with solar significance as a companion or brother soul of the Incas, and also as a human ancestor. / It was the king of birds in ancient Egypt, where many Gods are shown with the body or head, including Ra, who often had a disk in place of the crest, symbolizing the rising sun. Horus, god of the sky and of the day, is specifically a falcon god, his painted hawk-like eye a common emblem on Egyptian amulets signifying the sharpness of his protective vision. The Ba, a symbol of the individual spirit, has a falcon body and human head. / In Western traditions, the falcon is an emblem of the huntsmen and is associated with the Germanic sky-gods Wodan and Frigg, as well as the Nordic trickster Loki. / World of Wings – Flash / / Fly Away

  • Bast is the Egyptian goddess with the body of a maiden and the head of a cat. She is the Goddess of cats, the rising sun as well as the moon, truth, enlightenment, sexuality and birth, fertility and the harvest, the home, music, dance and the arts, among many other attributes. She is also sometimes considered to be the Egyptian version of the Greek Artemis and Roman Diana. Halloween was originally celebrated as the Feast of Bast and Sekhmet. Sekhmet is Bast’s twin sister, who has a lion head. While Bast is associated with life, Sekhmet is associated with death and is the destroyer goddess). In this stylized, abstracted portrait, I portrayed Bast with a golden corona or solar disc to represent the rising sun and life. The triangles are a symbol of fertility as well as the creative power. Mixed Media (liquid copper leaf, gold acrylic, oil pastels, colored pencils, and black art marker) on tan Canson pastel paper. Original work measures 19×12.5 inches.
