These few seedlings burst from the ground full of vigour; striving for the light. Now they suffer and die as a multitude of fungal threads converge on them from below, shredding them internally and eating them alive before erupting through their dead tissue to sow the seeds of destruction for the next plants that land in their ground. Unfortunately for the plants, I was their destroyer. My karmic load must be building up. Only the strong will survive, and evolution is my day job. A hand held macro shot.
This birds-eye view of a little colony of Coprinus plicatilis (Pleated Ink Cap Fungus) is probably the very first shot of fungi I ever made. I almost trod on them as I alighted from my car at a local shopping centre car park. Fuji S5500: High resolution jpg, Macro, Auto – f/2.8 @ 1/17sec, ISO200, Hand held. / Photoshop CS. THE MAKING of ‘Volvariella speciosa #1’: / I was on a fungi safari with a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mate and we were heading back to the car after a very successful hunt when I spotted these fungi just beside the track with the lowering sun making very good back lighting. / I removed the tripod mounting plate from the camera to get it as low as possible for the perspective and to ensure I had part of the back lit caps showing. / The aim of this shot was to make a good image of the fungi and to show them in their environment. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/11 @ 1/5sec, Manual focus, ISO80, Tripod, Timer. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. This fungus is considered as a disgusting thing by some people by a social prejudice wich is widely ignored by nature
The second in this series representing natures cycle of life. A fairy ring being the circle of mushrooms that show where the underground body of a fungus grows outwards. Forming an ever increasing outward circle like ripples on the forest floor. The inner circle with lines radiating is symbolic of the parent mushroom, natures cycle of life and energy, and the starting point of natures evolution. I’ve achieved a bright stained glass effect by painting in a cellular style that I’ve worked in for some time, and applying a single wash of acrylic paint over the white of the canvas board. This results in a large degree of light reflection from the surface.
