A majestic Mute Swan cob who came scaringly close. Taken from the bank of the River Soar just south of Leicester, England
Mute Swan Cygnet, probably only a few weeks old. Abbotsbury Swannery, Dorset, England. These swans are wild, but quite used to people visiting the swannery and therefore make good models.
If you remember the fairy tale… I still don’t see how these could be termed “ugly” even by duckling standards…... :o) Mute Swan Cygnets, Abbotsbury Swannery, Dorset, England.

Photo taken at a marsh I love to frequent in Quinte West, Ontario, Canada. This male mute swan was putting on a wonderful display for his female partner during mating season. As he normally just floats about the marsh, I was thrilled to capture this! Canon Rebel EOS XTi with 70-200mm f/4 L IS lens. This little guy or gal seemed to have become separated from siblings and parents, but I’m sure some swan soon claimed it. I would have happily taken it home… if my bunnies would have allowed it! ;o) Mute Swan cygnet (cygnus olor) at Abbotsbury Swannery, Dorset. Canon EOS 5D Mk II with Canon EF 400mm L f/5.6
I’d like to say this was a male swan (since today is Father’s Day in the UK) but I believe she’s a lady as it’s the gals that usually sit on the nest and incubate the eggs – and I saw later she still has some eggs to hatch. After I’d finished snapping she decided it was time the babies went to bed and promptly herded them underneah her and sat on them! Ouch! Mute Swans can weigh up to 50lb and these are fairly new hatchlings looking at the size of them, perhaps a week old. Abbotsbury Swannery, Dorset. Canon EOS 5D Mk II with Canon EF 70-200mm L IS f/4

Featured in Changing Zoom Lenses – Sep 20th, 2009 The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is a species of swan, and hence in turn a member of the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae. It is native to much of Europe and Asia, and (as a rare winter visitor) the far north of Africa. It is also an introduced species in North America, Australasia and southern Africa. The name ‘mute’ derives from its being less vocal than other swan species, though it is not always silent. / Mute Swans nest on large mounds that they build with waterside vegetation in shallow water on islands in the middle or at the very edge of a lake. They are monogamous and often reuse the same nest each year, restoring or rebuilding it as needed. Male and female swans share the care of the nest, and once the cygnets are fledged it is not uncommon to see whole families looking for food. They feed on a wide range of vegetation, both submerged aquatic plants which they reach with their long necks, and by grazing on land. / Photographed in Egli’s Sheep Farm property in Minnitaki, Ontario, Canada / Canon XSi with 75-300mm lens, f/7.1, 1/1000sec, ISO-200, focal length 300mm.
