Musk Lorikeets Glossopsitta concinna are widespread across south-eastern Australia and are found within forests and woodlands dominated by eucalypts. They are often not seen as they live up in the canopy, rarely coming down to eye level. However, they are known to ‘raid’ suburban parks and gardens. These ‘comedians’ were photographed in captivity where they were tempted down to the camera with some sweet apple. For better viewing click on ‘view larger’.

These lorikeets feed so quickly, moving about in the tree canopy and rarely stay motionless for long. In this instance and the other photo, I used high speed flash to freeze the movement.

Musk Ox Farm, Palmer, Ak – Where visitors can see the ancient Ice Age mammal. It is only during rut that the male musk ox gives off the scent of musk, hence the name. Muskoxen are more closely related to sheep and goats than to oxen, but are in their own genus, Ovibos. Muskoxen have a distinctive defensive behavior: when the herd is threatened, the bulls and cows will face outward to form a stationary ring around the calves. This is an effective defense against predators such as wolves, but makes them an easy target for human hunters. In 1934 the United States brought a small group of musk oxen to Alaska from Greenland to form an experimental domestic herd. From this start animals were released on Nunavik Island as a free-ranging population. This transplant was very successful, and supplied stock to establish populations elsewhere in Alaska, Norway, and Russia Qiviut (pronounced “kiv-ee-ute”) is the soft under-wool of the musk ox. It, is harvested once a year and delivered to Oomingmak, an Alaskan native knitter’s co-operative. The knitters work at home in Eskimo villages throughout Alaska creating scarves, nachaqs (Eskimo smoke rings) and luxurious caps. Each village has it’s own signature pattern derived from traditional designs. Unlike most wools, qiviut is softer, not scratchy and will not shrink in any temperature of water.

Muskoxen are social and live in herds, usually of around 10–20 animals, but sometimes over 70. Winter herds consist of adults of both sexes as well as young animals. During the mating season, which peaks in mid-August, males compete for dominance, and one dominant bull drives other adult males out of the group. Non-breeding males will often form male only herds of 3-10 or wander the tundra alone. During this period all males are extremely aggressive. Bulls will even charge birds if they are close by. Females are sexually mature at two years of age, and males reach sexual maturity after five years. The gestation period is eight or nine months. Almost all pregnancies yield single calves. The young nurse for a year, but may start to eat grasses as soon as a week after birth.

  • Musk Ox Farm II

Musk Ox Farm – Palmer, Alaska This is a place to learn about a very impressive ancient animal. Also, how some humans were compelled to save them from extinction. Qiviut (an Inuit word) , the rarest fabric is made from the under hairs and is softer then cashmere washable and if placed in boiling water will not shrink.. You can purchase hats, scarves, etc. which are made by women in the remote villages. While expensive they help provide funds to people who would not have the ability. This is a great stop in Palmer. The muskox has a two-layered coat, and qiviut refers specifically to the soft underwool beneath the longer outer wool. The muskox sheds this layer of wool each spring. Qiviut is plucked or combed from the coat of the muskox during the molt or gathered from objects the animals have brushed against; unlike sheep, the animals are not sheared. Qiviut is shed in a tightly synchronized spring molting period. The qiviut will loosen from the animal’s skin and pull away slightly, creating a “spectacled” look around the eyes and becoming visible all over the body at the surface of the pelt. At this stage of the molt, the undercoat is a short but relatively uniform distance from the skin. This lends itself to combing the qiviut from the animal in a single large sheet. (If not combed, the qiviut will begin to fall out in clumps or be rubbed off by the animal, and may be plucked off the ground or bushes, but qiviut collected this way is of lower quality and requires more cleaning
