The most powerful computing and the applications that sit on it are taking us back to the past. I am particularly thinking about the emergence of micro-audiences and how this is very similar to what existed prior to the advent of mass communication. Before Edison invented the phonograph, people created the music they listened to and shared it with people they knew. In a similar way, most decorative arts were produced and shared locally. If you wanted to decorate your mantelpiece you had better start whittling away. Being creative in this pre-industrial world was something you did rather than something you bought. Strangely, this is re-emerging. The Internet is re-enabling micro-communities, but based on interest rather than geography. Singers and artists can create for small audiences from all over the world. This is part of a larger trend. Slow food is challenging industrialized fast food. The craft movement is resisting mass production. Bloggers are taking on mass media and TV is losing out to online video. I cannot help but feel this is a good thing. It feels to me like us reclaiming part of our humanity that we should never have let go. Martin (aka Pilgrim)

  • The Roadmap: Spanish Painters, German Pop Music & Iced Tea

Every 5-ish weeks we take a bit of time out to regroup, argue talk about what we think we need to do next, what’s broken, what we dream of doing eventually, crazy marketing ideas, even crazier tech ideas, problems, solutions, etc. The nerds (myself included) also get a chance to tinker around with new code, do little experiments and fix things we haven’t had time for in the regular mad rush to get stuff done. At the end of this 5th week we tend to have a massive pile of things we’d love to do and a sense of which of those are most important. Pete usually thinks there’s not enough there, and the dev team usually curls up in the fetal position terrified about how much work there is. “What does this have to do with Spanish painters, german pop music or iced tea?” you ask? Each one of these 5-week cycles is named after a particular artist or creative type we like (or at least one we think is amusing), starting with “A” for Archibald and working our way through the alphabet. We recently wrapped up the Goya and Hasselhoff cycles, and we’ve just started work on Ice T. You can blame Hasselhoff on me (the pictures of the Hoff around the office were punishment enough) and Ice T on Xavier. Anyway, we recently had one of these 5th weeks to figure out what we were trying achieve with Ice T, and we think it’s either (a) a really good idea, or (b) a really crazy idea to let you all know what’s on the roadmap and what’s really important to us for the immediate future. Of course, this is not a promise that we’ll get it all done, and it certainly doesn’t mean that we’re ignoring the other million things on the list. Have patience! Without any further ramblings, in no particular order, here’s what’s up with Ice T: some more love for Groups some buyer-oriented pages and paths through the site for shoppers a whole lotta love for our fulfillment houses so that they can process, make and ship your orders faster a whole lotta love for our back-end accounting system bigger/better canvas prints posters (these look beautiful!) postcards supersized products (yup, we want big to be bigger!) measurements in both metric and imperial gift vouchers gift wrapping wishlists more currencies something other than paypal for payments a two-minute tour for new visitors some tools to help artists promote themselves elsewhere on the web tools for us admins and moderators edit/delete tools for comments planning out some super secret stuff for the “J” release a whole lot of little/boring/techy things you don’t need to hear about This list will definitely change, twist and morph, but hopefully it’s still useful for you guys to see what’s coming up, and to know we’re listening. What should we name the “J” release? We’ve had plenty of painters, musicians and questionable actors, so perhaps it’s time for a writer, or a photographer, or a sculptor, or…? — Justin

  • Say "NO!" to the Orphan Works Act
    by bchrisdesigns

I found out about this ludicrous proposed law on Red Bubble...

I found out about this ludicrous proposed law on Red Bubble and wanted to let everyone else know what they can do about it! If you have not heard about the Orphan Works Act, then you should research it and speak out before it is too late (especially if you are an artist, writer, and/or musician)! No, this Act is not about displaced children or found animals. It revolves around works of art (including fine art, photography, writing, music, etc.) that are not registered with newly proposed agencies. ANY work not registered would be considered in the public domain. This is a dangerous concept and just goes to show how greedy and capitalistic our society, government, and big businesses have become. According to GoPetition.com: “If the Orphan Works legislation passes, you and I and all creatives will lose virtually all the rights to not only our future work but to everything we’ve created over the past 34 years, unless we register it with the new, untested and privately run (by the friends and cronies of the U.S. government) registries. Even then, there is no guarantee that someone wishing to steal your personal creations won’t successfully call your work an orphan work, and then legally use it for free. In short, if Congress passes this law, YOU WILL LOSE THE RIGHT TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR OWN CREATIONS!” We would be forced into a world where big business can bully us and use whatever they wanted and not be penalized for it. And, this law not only affects artists, writers, and musicians. It also affect the everyday consumer! If you are planning to get your the photographs of your cousin’s wedding developed at a Wal-Mart or other big box retailer, then you better be prepared to get every image copyrighted or you may just end up seeing them on Wal-Mart’s billboards! Gone would be the days of having rights the minute you create something. Now, if you don’t pay to protect it, then it is like no one created the image and it is up for grabs! Who wants to live in this kind of world other than greedy politicians and businesses? And, it does not surprise me that this has all happened under the Bush administration. Who were the idiots that voted for him and thought he would do us some good? Well, seems like the joke’s on YOU! In an April 10th article in Animation World Magazine, award-winning animation producer/director and speaker, Mark Simon, writes: “It is currently against international law to coerce people to register their work for copyright because there are so many inherent problems with it. But because big business can push through laws in the United States, our country is about to break with the rest of the world, again, and take your rights away. With the tens of millions of photos and pieces of artwork created each year, the bounty for forcing everyone to pay a registration fee would be enormous. We lose our rights and our creations, and someone else makes money at our expense. This includes every sketch, painting, photo, sculpture, drawing, video, song and every other type of creative endeavor. All of it is at risk! If the Orphan Works legislation passes, you and I and all creatives will lose virtually all the rights to not only our future work but to everything we’ve created over the past 34 years, unless we register it with the new, untested and privately run (by the friends and cronies of the U.S. government) registries. Even then, there is no guarantee that someone wishing to steal your personal creations won’t successfully call your work an orphan work, and then legally use it for free.” So, what can you do about it? Well educate yourself on the issues, write to your congress men and women, and sign as many petitions as your can. As I struggled to navigate through this site initially, a month or so ago, I was fortunate that several Bubblers were kind enough to share how they uploaded artwork to their profiles and art pages; links to music and videos and some other helpful tidbits which I recently shared with a few friends invited here… Hope this helps you present your amazing work easier, if you didn’t already know how… Clickable Link: / 1. Quotation mark / 2. What you want your link to say / 3. Quotation mark / 4. Colon / 5. URL code – http://www.etc…com Add Images: / 1. Upload Image, Title, Description, Tags, Groups & Items for sale – SAVE / 2. Click onto buy/preview and save to favorites the card, print and/or framed print, by right clicking image of card or print; then go back to artwork page / 3. In description box, add !exclamation point, then click to another browser tab / 4. Find image saved in favorites and click to highlight URL, Cut (ControlC), click back to browser tab with artwork / 5. Paste URL into description box and add !exclamation point / 6. You can add more than one photo of work (Tip: when saving in FAV, I add letter c (cards), L (laminated), M (mounted) & F (framed) when saving multiple images of same work. Just be sure to add !exclamation points before and after the URL. / 7. You can use this same process for adding to Profile Description Image Sizes: / For all sale items except clothing and calendars, the size of images uploaded should be 2500×3500, then in the ‘Items for sale’ section (below tags), you can check all: cards, mounted print, laminated print, canvas print, framed print and posters for sale. If someone requests Large prints, medium & large posters or laminated prints and/or calendars you can then upload a larger image. Profile Page: your URL for your profile will be www.redbubble.com/people/yourname to edit this page, you can add links to other sites and pictures like instructed above, in the describe yourself box. The daily feed question request has been helpful to me, not having to sign in daily. They’ll send you an email of your daily activity – you click onto any underlined feature, activity or comment and you are there – I save them in my email inbox, until I receive the next one. Challenges: RB just made most of the challenges really very easy as the group will send notice in your overview feed, click onto enter now and all the work you have uploaded will show up to chose from for entering; note whether they require a TAG, you may need to edit before entering. They have not yet mastered entering “writing” works, most groups do it in forums. Groups: join the ones you feel you can get the most exposure and follow their specific rules, you can click onto anyone in your watchlists’ list of groups to seek commonalities. Or, while looking at artwork posted by others, on the right side where the description is – below are underlined groups that have accepted the artwork and you can click those to learn more. Watchlist: Add people you feel share the same tastes in artwork for support – by clicking on names of commenters, bubblemailers or checking my watchlist and reading profiles, seeing artwork & groups in common. Bubblesite/Gallery: this URL is different than your Profile page it would be http://yourname.redbubble.com – you can click this tab on your page to build and manage it as you add artwork – I suggest you get used to some of the above, so you have optimum pricing and exposure for items for sale. The templates are easy and to manage, you click and drag your artwork into categories you chose. Customers can buy directly from your gallery, without being redbubble members, or you can simply share the URL with friends to see your photos. Written works are not included in the gallery, but all photos uploaded for sale will automatically be in the Manage section to be added to the categories you move them to, I manage my gallery once weekly. Text Formatting: / BOLD to make text bold =bold / Italic to make text italic =italic / Underline to underline text =underlined / Small Text make text smaller =smaller text Comments: when someone comments on your work, you can reply (click) and they will receive a feed that you responded – if they are rude (click report) or delete – when you just comment below you will be the only one who knows. Hope this helps you navigate the site better as your page reads… / Overview Groups Account Art Clothing Writing Calendars Journal Watchlist Favorites Promote Bubblesite Bubblemail These above are yours – the ones at the top of the page are the entire RedBubble Community or Main/Home pages… Home Art Clothing Groups MyBubble Have Fun!!!

Wow, what a big weekend… It started with a band shoot, then a midsumma burlesque shoot where I stalked Adrian on his first real photography gig, then a gay pride march shoot and then I totally crashed into bed and today I feel really yuck (not hung over in case you were presuming, just bloody tired). Anyways, I have only had a few minutes to even look at my shots from the first two shoots. I’m really new to this concept of event photogrpahy. As in where people are relying on you to produce something more artistic than a happy snap. So here are a few of my shots from Saturday evening. Constructive criticism, comments, advice all very welcome. I want to learn! Here is the full gallery

/ Some or probably most of you by now have seen Anthony Hedger’s (to his friend’s known as Tony) face pop up on your artwork. He often generously spreads his good cheer and gracious compliments to one and all. I remember the first time he discovered my work, he was one of the first people to comment on over half of my work at one time!!!! / It was moving to me and it changed the way I operated here. As in…It was contagious!! I found myself doing the same thing. Stopping and looking through an entire gallery in one sitting. It is really quite fun. It doesn’t take that much time if you just zone everything else out…and I’m sure it means a lot to individuals receiving them. It did to me ;) Today Tony wrote a short story for my artwork Abigails Friends and he did a great job on it. When inspiration hit’s that man it just flows out of him! (It is still under construction so bare with us…i.e. punctuation, grammar) / It is such a nice companion to my work, that it made me think of that saying…..”Together We Make Beautiful Music”. So I wanted to share this with everyone and post it on my site in case you didn’t get a chance to read his work….which he has plenty of to check out!!! If you feel so inspired check out some of his other work; it will be sure to entertain you and drop him a comment or two if it does!!! “Abigail’s Friends” / Written By Anthony Hedger / Artwork By Carrie Glenn Abigail’s Friends art work by Carrie Glenn – words by Anthony Hedger Abigail was seven years old today but her parents were too busy to spend time with her. / “Why not go for a walk?” Her father asked. / “But I wanted to spend time with you both.” She said getting just a little annoyed that they couldn’t be bothered again. / “You know we have to work Abbie?” Her father said walking out of the room to fix his tie in the hall mirror. / Abigail hated to be called Abbie. / “Don’t call me Abbie.” She shouted after him going red in the face. “Use my full name the one I have been christened with or none at all.” And with that she stormed out of the house not even looking at her mother slamming the front door behind her. She started walking towards the woods and soon forgot about her parents and sang her happy song and skipped along the small path and went inside the woods. / A small orange butterfly fluttered by her and landed on her shoulder. / “Oh hello.” She said to the butterfly. “Isn’t it a lovely day?” / “The best one this year Abigail, where are you going?” / “Oh, no where special, just out for a walk to get out of the house.” / “Can I join you?” / “Oh course you can little one.” / And she carried on singing and skipping with the butterfly bouncing up and down on her shoulder but he sang along with her. / They came to a clearing in the woods about fifteen minutes later and she stopped dead in her tracks. / “I think we better go back now.” She whispered to the butterfly. / “Why?” The butterfly asked. “It’s only my friends and they are having a special tea party just for you, come on and I’ll introduce you to them.” / “Er, ok, if you think I’ll be alright?” / “Of course you’ll be alright.” The red fox called to her. “Come on your tea is getting cold.” / So for the next two hours Abigail sat with Mr. Fox, Mr. Bear, Miss Rabbit, Ms. Blue bird and a hundred different butterflies and had tea and cake and chatted as though she had known them all her life. She gave each of them a big, big hug after and thanked them for making this the best birthday ever. / “Er, just before I do go home, how did you know it was my birthday anyway?” / “You could say a little bird told us.” The bear said gently and they all began to laugh. The End

  • Paying for Art

The recent decision by Radiohead to release their new album with a user decided cost ( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2007/10/03/bmcolumn103.xml ) has made me wonder about art and its perceived value in general. The media has gone crazy on this story, musing on whether this will effect the future of the music industry in general. Will most people pay for this album and reward the artist, or will they happily consume it as a freebie? Would you pay for something you didn’t have to? Is it just plain stupidity to pay for something you can get for free or is it an ethical question? I think this issue ties in quite nicely with the issue of “security” that comes up on RB occasionally – the idea that consumers can simply right click and save a copy of your art. Early indications from the Radiohead camp say that “most” people are paying for the album. Most! That means that given the choice of freebie or payment, many are choosing to pay for art. I wonder how much this means for us, as artists. Does being fair and allowing the responsibility to rest on the consumer instead of controlling it by restrictions and watermarks, actually make people act ethically!? Why are most people paying? Is Radiohead’s attitude on this point the reason people are choosing to pay? By standing their ground ethically, does this roll over onto the consumer? A kind of contagious morality? I think this makes people think about the value of what they are paying for and receiving. There are always going to be some people who want everything for free and will right click and save your work or download the album for free. But were they ever going to be your buyer?

  • / Midnight Blues by Karin Taylor Well howdy my bubbly friends, and wouldya believe i got me favourite piece of art featured on the HOMEPAGE tonight!! omi!!! omeeee!!! omi!!!! You see, i was just havin’ a little whinge about how i never get featured no more….. / and the one i was thinkin’ deserved a little featuring…just happens to pop up on / the homepage….wo!! I should try whingin’ a little more often (nah, my family disagrees!!!!!) lol Midnight Blues is from a painting i did recently on Arches Aquarelle Paper 56×76cm, a mixed media production, utilising inks, pastels, acrylics, charcoals, found objects such as string and fabric….and the most beautiful gold paint which gives the guitar it’s lustre Midnight Blues is from the Inspired Series by Karin Taylor, during the painting of this, i was strongly influenced by my favourite Australian artist, Brett Whitely, longing to capture something of the wonderful curves he created in his works.
