WOOJam is about establishing a creative community in our lifetime. Neither an extinct species nor a dying dream, it is the creative community of the naughties. It’s an awe-inspiring event that began as an open mic night and rapidly evolved into a hotbed of creative collaboration where artists of all disciplines can come together and fuse their talents in a non-intimidating environment. In a world of social isolation, studio apartments and averted gazes, WOOJam brings the love back to Sydney’s / epicentre of boho chic in Kings Cross. It is a creative space where everyone is encouraged to sing a song, perform a monologue, play piano instrumentals or simply shake your tambourine and stomp your feet to the music. And there’s no cover charge in sight. We set it up to establish an an outlet for creativity, to build a community of artists and to reinvigorate the arts scene by supporting and inspiring, rather than losing touch in an uber cool environment where self-expression is quashed by a desire to see and be seen. WOOJam is about surrendering your ego at the door. It’s about experimentation, development, enthusiasm / and generosity. It is successful because it thrives on a sense of community and belonging. People listen when you play, they cheer when you finish and the adrenaline rush of performance resonates beyond the on-stage experience. / / New friendships have been forged, but best of all new creative collaborations have flowed from WOOJam nights. Artists who have performed now play gigs around Sydney and some are laying tracks for their debut recordings. Before WOOJam many of these artists were simply strumming to mum and dad in the lounge room. It’s not a hippy commune…but it could be. WOOJam spirit demands optimism and respect. Cynicism is so 1999. WOOJam is about being pro-active, not waiting for government hand-outs or giving up on your art. Our aim is to offer aspiring artists the opportunity to extend themselves. Many have come from the bedroom, to the stage to the studio, and this is just the beginning. / / We have recorded an EP featuring four regular WOOJammers and we hope this is the first of many more to come. We raised money for the recording through raffles, donations and an auction of raspberry-flavoured WOOJam. People believe in WOOJam and want it to flourish. / / The dedication and support we receive from our regulars and special guests is amazing. WOOJam fills a void providing a non-pretentious space to engage with art and produce it together. And we’ll be darned if you don’t feel the urge to let fly with a big “WOO!” once you come on down. I’m feeling very soulful and spiritual this evening and having seen and heard Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu performance on The Jewels Holland Show on BB1 a month ago I was so taken back by the spirit of this man and his talent to play guitar being blind. / He has performed in many high places and has performed before HRH Queen Elizabeth and many of you who live in Australia may already know him and heard his music. For Father’s Day my Daughter bought me his CD and I am so thrilled with the songs and the feelings that his music gives! So This is for you Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu / Thank You so much for sharing your world with us and may you have many years of playing to give to your public you are truly a star!
