This week I’ve had the pleasure of licensing an image for 10 years to the Melbourne Museum. The photograph, of the Melbourne city skyline, will be displayed in an audio-visual as part of The Melbourne Story exhibition in the Australia Gallery at the museum from March 20, 2008. Interestingly, the image was discovered here at RedBubble in my portfolio of work. The exhibition is said to be the largest ever developed by the museum and will present life in Melbourne from the 1830s to the present. Melbourne Museum / 11 Nicholson St, Carlton, Melbourne. / Open 10am-5pm daily. / Admission: Adult $6.00, Concession and Children free. Melbourne

The Melbourne Story has been officially launched at the Melbourne Museum. At the official launch, Victorian Premier John Brumby said “The Melbourne Story explores the great moments, landmarks, people and events that have shaped this city and is the single-largest exhibition about Melbourne ever staged. “It will provide Victorians, as well as the many hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit from interstate and overseas each year, with a unique opportunity to see how Melbourne has evolved since the 1800s.” Museum Victoria has spent the past three years developing The Melbourne Story, and I’m pleased to inform that one piece of my photographic work is being featured in an interactive map display. This is my image that was chosen by the Melbourne Museum and I have licensed it for 10 years. Melbourne by Darren Stones A photograph of the interactive map display can be found here; / http://www.flickr.com/photos/24233011@N06/2344158061/ To all Melburnians, Victorians, and visitors, I highly recommend this new permanent exhibition to you. I’ve been back now for nearly 2 months, my holiday seems like something I did years ago now, and I still have about 2500 photos to go through but don’t seem to have the time or energy right now. I want to thank everyone for the sales too. It’s so incredibly exciting to get that little notification in my inbox to say I’ve sold something. Thank you to the buyers, whoever you are – it is much appreciated.. And what i’ve sold just recently?... 4 of these (cards) / 1 card of this.. / 1 card of this.. / and a mounted print today….. / I’m so pleased about the sale of the little blue penguin – they are gorgeous birds, and their feathers feel more like fur than feathers. Very soft. This one was on Page 10 of my gallery so pleased someone could find it. Cheers / Robyn

Currently, I am working on an online gallery project with a couple of friends, specifically targeting the Digital Arts and Digital Artists. Its geared towards “fine art” (preferably rendered with a Drawing Tablet such as Wacom and Pen tool) – instead of just the stuff done with filters in Photoshop. The reason being that, specific artwork will be compiled for a special hardcover publication in the summer of 2009. Details will be provided as we move along with the gallery. I would like to invite ALL Digital Artists to have a look at the site, which will have full functions on November 16th. Anyone interested in assisting/contributing, being part of the team, I would be happy to have you on-board. The website is: MDFA Best regards, Solomon P.S. Its NOT a place for selling Art, just a venue to show-off your art and Digital creativity online. A link to your main gallery, even back to your Redbubble site, will be provided along with display of your work.

On my recent trip to the United States I had the pleasure of diving into the experience of visiting several world class galleries in the major cities along my path of travels. / Most of the specific exhibitions I describe had low or no entrance prices. A lot of American museums tend to charge a price for entry to the museum itself. Our “blockbuster” exhibition mentality here in Melbourne of free gallery entry but very crowded and expensive visiting exhibits is almost the exact opposite approach. San Francisco – The de Young Museum / The de Young is one of the most impressive galleries I’ve seen. The relatively new building is clad almost entirely in perforated copper sheeting and has a wonderful presence highlighted by being located in the grounds of the expansive Golden Gate park. The interior design is light and airy and the gallery spaces are well laid out. The museum also has a large tower as part of the design witch has a wonderful observation deck that allows you to quietly reflect on your surroundings. Outside you can find a great sculpture garden. Showing in the Museum, at the time of my visit, was a comprehensive exhibition on the life and work of Andy Warhol . Exhibits included his famous Brillo Boxes and many of his painted works covering a broad span of his artistic life – from early concert programs, his later work with Debbie Harry and his delving into television production. The narrative of the exhibition was wonderful with scenes from his days in the silver lined Factory, his work with the Velvet Underground and his days frequenting studio 54. Brilliant stuff. New York – The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum / Yep you have to go to this most iconic of buildings – that being said it’s advisable to avoid the queue for tickets if you can (visitors to New York can get a citypass to do that). The building has a wonderful elegance as envisaged by its architect Frank Lloyd Wright although time hasn’t been kind with little modern interior details sometimes clashing with the original elegance of his vision. / In addition to some of the permanent Guggenheim collection there was a major exhibition of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, From Within Outward held to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Museum. This exhibition covered his many proposals and plans from urban design and to his concept drawings for Baghdad’s public institutions. Insights for me included how a lot of his designs were focused on economical use of materials – even to creating simple but elegant tents in the Arizona Desert for an alternative place of study and vacation. Looking at rare original work on his designs also gives an idea as to how his thinking sometimes went thought several iterations or, a lot of the time, never got built. / A smaller exhibition that was on was Kandinsky and early pre-world war one impressionist painters. It gave me great sense of the early impressionist movement. New York – The Cooper Hewwit National Design Museum / Now this gallery isn’t on everyone’s list – and it wasn’t on mine but I wisely decided that going to something a little of the beaten path was a useful exercise in broadening my knowledge and perhaps coming across something unexpected to spark a future creative vision of my own. / The Museum is located near the Guggenhiem and occupies the old mansion of Andrew Carnegie. Even with 64 rooms It’s not a large place as galleries go, but it has plans to expand and grow. The main exhibition running at the time was about the art of felting wool. The variety of objects out of felted wool was quite mind boggling – the felted stones were a highlight of textile surrealism – very strange but somehow with a beautiful organic shape and texture. New York – Museum of Modern Art / The museum of modern art was showing “Into the Sunset”:http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/97 a wonderful display of images from those photographers who decided to concentrate on documenting the western United States as the land of hope and opportunity – in much the same way the pioneering settlers did years ago. As the exhibition description said: cowboys, suburbanites ,gold miners, starlets and drifters. Artists that caught my eye included Dorothea Lange= , Timothy O’Sullivan= , Joel Sternfeld= , and Carleton E. Watkins= – all with wonderful evocative images. / Also showing at MoMA was a collection illustrating printmaking techniques and works from the permanent collection including an early Jeep and Bell Helicopter. For me, being on a vacation and seeing what some America’s best galleries had to display was time well spent.

If you can get yourself near the Science Museum in London, and have any interest whatsoever in animation, I’d recommend their new Wallace and Gromit’s Cracking Ideas exhibition, although I think it’s probably designed for children. I was just keen to see the set pieces and original models. Most of them from the last film as a considerable proportion of the sets were destroyed in a fire in Bristol. The only newsworthy event from there that hasn’t had Banksy’s name attached to it. At least since Massive Attack. / / / / / / They let you sod about with some green plasticine too, so I made quite a rubbish Gromit. / Enjoy your weekend.

Occupational Health and Safety…..... My bitch for today…. I went to “History Alive” today, at Fort Lytton, in Brisbane, and of course raced over to the fort itself, to grab some new shots. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that most of the area had been cordoned off, and the best places for light and shadow had been totally ruined because plywood had been cable-tied across all the railings. Some of you might remember “Last Man Standing” where the light and shadow play made for an interesting composition. The light can’t get through there any more. / The trip through the tunnel was turned into a nightmare by shoulder height plywood instead of an open railing where you could see into the other rooms, as shown in these two following images from last year. How can we appreciate the difficulties faced by the young men and women who had to defend our shores when we’re faced with the tidying up and “making safe” of these historic sites? Somebody let their child play in these tunnels, and they hurt themselves, so now we’re faced with plywood instead of bricks and steel? Please!!!!!! Keep these places as historically original as possible! Parents need to learn that they are responsible for their children, not the state, not the national parks, and not the museums! I thank you for listening (or reading)

They gave him an exhibition space, they gave him room for some animatronic displays and after that, they threw him the keys to the rest of the museum and let him go nuts. (Oh, and they put up signs saying they don’t endorse graffiti or vandalism… but enjoy the exhibit!). His name is Banksy, and he’s arguably the most influential street artist in the world… And the good news is that nobody seemed to mind about the works being photographed (woohoo!) / Bristol is Banksy’s home town, and until the 31st August you could join the queue to see his exhibition and view it for free. If you could stand the queue, that is. / This was the queue I walked away from on Saturday, determined to start closer to the front on Sunday. In fact, this was the second queue – there was another one closer to the entrance of the museum itself. Sunday I was probably about 40th in line and waited just under two hours. Worth it? Oh yeah. / Entryway, featuring a melting icecream van, a riot policeman riding a playground horsey and a bunch of statues, lightly and subtly modified. Like this one-winged angel with a micro-skirt and a cigarette! / Nice! I’m fairly sick of metal signs telling me how to live my life. For instance, ‘Give Way’. I’m not giving Way to nobody – I TAKE way. (I’m not sure what I mean. I don’t even have a car…) / I hate Mondays too. Fortunately, this was a Sunday and I could catch the irony without weeping. / Tourism. Love the subtle dig at people who use their mobile phones to take pictures on holiday. / We’re all waiting for somebody to finish.. / Hoodies graffiti-ing a sleeping Thomas the Tank Engine (hee!) / Nice 3D modifiecation in this work. / ... and another. The joys of a cigarette break. Not that I smoke.. / Abandoned car in rustic wilderness / Another rustic wilderness / So THAT’S how the Spanish Armada was defeated? / “The Flight To Egypt” – best subtle title of any of the works. / I… uh…. don’t know what to say about that one. It’s an apron design. / Madonna and Child. And iPod. (iPod classic.. interesting) / Michelangelo’s David. And some… uh… strong…. political views. / The Bristol Flier… a historic biplane. Now used by a Guantanamo Bay escapee, apparently. (you really had to keep your eyes open when walking around the museum – there were numerous things like that, unannounced, hidden in plain sight) / The Venus de Milo as a bag lady / Let’s just take a look at that queue again…. worth four hours of waiting? Maybe… but two hours was better!

I am happy to be announcing that I will be taking part in a very positive art happening at the Bakersfield Museum of Art in December. Fellow artist, Joe Brubaker has generously conceived the show which he has titled the “Exquisite Garden Project”. Joe has invited a handful of artist to join him in Bakersfield to create a sculpture garden in the museum. His inspiration is the Exquisite Corpse drawings made popular by the Surrealists movement. Each artist will be doing their own piece with the theme in mind. The final work will be the merging of all of our works. My own piece will be a tree that I will construct on site, made from trash and found items that I will collect from Bakersfield’s streets. I am very excited to be a part of this fun and rare opportunity. I will be making future journal entries to document the installation and show. The opening for the show will be December 10th, 2009… Check the museums link above for more info. I would love to meet any of you who can possibly make it to the opening. The show will run for three months… Sam Dantone / 11/25/09 PS. The design above is for T-Shirts made for the event, and was created by the collaboration of Joe Brubaker, Don Guthrie, and myself.

I just returned from Bakersfield, CA where I took place in the Exquisite Garden Project, sponsored by the artist Joe Brubaker . The exhibit is being held at the Bakersfield Museum of Art . I completed the tree I envisioned without a hitch. I am very pleased with the outcome. Visit my journal to view the stages of growth of the tree. My tree is a small portion of the overall exhibit. Below is a selection of photos taken during the installation and the opening of the “Exquisite Garden”. The photos of the sculpted figures are Joe Brubaker’s creations. / / . / / . / / . / / . / / . / / . / / . / / . / / . / / . /
