Hi Guys, You may have seen on the news over the last week or so, the amazing rallys of protest that are occurring all over Burma, lead initially by the countrys monks. A military junta has ruled over Burma for the past 4 decades, notoriously and quite publically abusing the human rights of it’s own people. Most notably in the house-arrest of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who won a democratically formed election in 1990, but was refused ruling power by the junta. This weighs heavily on me from a personal level. Having been to the country, spoken to it’s people and seen tears well up as they spoke of their dreams to have ‘the lady’ released from arrest and parade her people. People speak politics in hushed voices. Tourism is only a very recent thing to the Burmese but we found they would carefully use every opportunity to let us know what was going on. Unfortunetly our media plays more importance on such issues as Brownlow medals so this will rarely make headline news. All I ask is that you spend a little bit of time, to understand what is happening in this country. The Burmese are a dignified people with traditional cultural values but they are at the whim of a superstitious and violent junta. Please just spend some time to try and understand what is happening in this country, if you don’t already know. There’s been some wonderful photography of Burma on this very site.

I’ve waited agessss… finally the finance minster approved and I could go out and get myself a Canon 400D DSLR… So I got the standard 18-55 lens, but I got them to throw in the 75-300 a 2gb card and a carry bag too… So now I’m freaken waiting for the battery to charge… So any tips any of you fellow 400d users might have, flood them in now and help me straighten up my learning curve…

So I was asked by the RB time to compile a list of my favorites for the featured page. And it felt strange actually, I don’t think I’ve ever really sat down and considered why and what specifically what appeals to me. So I thought of my inspirations. Travel is a huge part of my life, so culture, adventure and the unusual make up a big part of it. But theres an aspect of the urban environment, small, perhaps superficially insignificant differences that might define parts of our world. What I’ve tried to do with my selection is pick those small, momentary glimpses that might help to define those differences. Thanks for viewing. Sad news this morning.. 80 people killed in Jaipur after a series of bombs planted around the city… no claim of responsibility yet, but typically people are pointing the finger at Pakistan and/or other Islamist groups inside India, as targets were Hindu sites. It’s a bloody disgrace and I can only feel for the people who Jaipur, who have ordinarily been free of any religious violence. Took a drive to Corowa, NSW, Australia last weekend to check out the water level of the Murray River. We spent two nights there. It’s not really a river at the moment – more like a shallow stream you could wade across. Official data from the New South Wales Government NSW Water Information website indicates that the water level at Corowa on September 30, 2007 was 1.2 metres. The water level recorded on August 30, 2008 was 0.35 metres. The height of the river fluctuates during the year according to rainfall and discharge from Hume Dam, and during December ‘07 at Corowa it was recorded at 2.3 metres. http://www.waterinfo.nsw.gov.au/ © Darren Stones 2008.

Many thanks to everyone involved in running and moderating the Adelaide/South Australia group. To Stephen for getting it started and to our other five moderators. Special thanks to Reflexio for ringing the Advertiser regarding our current comp and trying to promote RB and the group. As a result my image Salt Pan was featured in colour in todays Advertiser along with a story on the plight of the River Murray. Great exposure for RB and the group. So from me (some 400 k’s away from Adelaide) thanks for all you do and for helping to promote our work. Steve

  • On the second weekend of November 2008 a group of Bubblers wandered into the town of Mannum, on the Mighty Murray River. Most of them were South Aussies, with one supagroovy Bubbler from Tassie. We had a total of 20 including the 3 Bubblers who visited from very very early Saturday morning until late that night. The really wonderful and friendly Bubblers who attended were Photoj, Danni, Jim, Elphonline, Beautiful Valley, Suzanne, Patapping, Mtapping, Bombamermaid, Tamarama, Bill, PrincessBren and AndyGii, plus the adoring family members that tagged along out of pure love! Not one to wake easily, I didn’t get up before the birds to take photos of the sun waking up. Most of the others did though (that’s dedication for you). / I’d say thousands (altogether) of photos were taken of various old cottages, leanto’s which looked like Joliffe created them, steam driven paddleboats, local wildlife (and tamelife… Mum Possom, her baby and her friend all seemed to enjoy that banana!!), sunrises, sunsets, water, clouds, people sitting, people standing, people eating, people chatting (about cameras!! Surprise surprise!!) and of course, people taking photos! And loads more things too!! My budding photographer didn’t want to know about the camera until we were packing up. He saw the tripod (that I hardly ever use) and spent ages playing with the various bits on it. He then decided he wanted to actually take some photos, not just play with the tripod!! Good thing I emptied the memory card first, or he wouldn’t have been able to take any! What else? I’ve found that not only do I have to save for a digital SLR, but I have to save for a Christmas in July AND a bubbler holiday on a houseboat!! How awful!! I’ll have to wait until after March or April to decide if I can do them both or not… well after Christmas! I’ve got it all bookmarked in Safari though ;D I didn’t get any painting or drawing done, but I did come home so relaxed that I felt really weird. I had no idea what the strange calm feeling was until I was chatting (bragging) to Belladonna on the phone and she said I sounded so relaxed! So thank you everyone for helping me become relaxed!!!! I hope it lasts longer than just a day ;D Thank you, all of you, for such a wonderful weekend!! / xx / GG

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder, and my Pentax’s ISO1600 setting is grimly dusting itself off for the only time it gets any use. Movie premieres are BACK, and they’re getting trickier.. / It’s the BFI British Film Festival. And what does that mean? It means Yellow Cap Guy ain’t leaving Leicester Square for the next fortnight…. / It’s George Clooney! I’ve actually watched very few of his films outside of the Oceans Series, but he’s never offended me in the way of, say, the Matthew Brodericks and Sean William Scotts of this world. / George Clooney has won an Oscar and portrayed Batman on screen. (Those two facts are unlikely to be related) / Incidentally, I too now am in proud possession of a genuine George Clooney autograph. That said, the stylised ‘GC’ initial-based autograph leaves me open to accusations I’m passing off the autograph of West Indian opening batsman Gordon Greenidge as that of George Clooney. Never mind… / It’s comedian Jason Schwartzman. I had to check IMDB to find out why he was important. I recognise some films but oddly none of his roles. Never mind, the hairstyle and bow tie are clearly top-notch. / Director Wes Anderson was also responsible for ‘The Royal Tennenbaums’ which was okay I guess, and ‘The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou’, which made me laugh twice… in the trailer. / I don’t know who he is, and I’m not sure how I feel about him dressing his son as a smaller version of himself. / Is… is that… former supermodel Cindy Crawford?? Well, let’s add a fourth supermodel to my list, then! Fittingly for the way the universe works, my autofocus and framerate both played up the instant she got out of her car, and a couple of seconds later my camera’s battery failed. I quickly changed it, but by the time I did that she was gone.. / Bill Murray!! Ghostbusters : brilliant. Broken Flowers : moving. Lost in Translation : brilliant AND moving. (In this picture, I believe he was looking up and waving at some people in looking out of windows in hotel rooms overlooking the ‘Square) / We shared a moment. He still owes me five dollars. / Actress Thandie Newton, whom I snapped at last year’s Rock’n’Rolla premiere. Back then, I was unable to determine whether she actually had two eyes as over the course of a whole evening all I photographed were profile-aspect pictures. Newsflash : she’s pretty AND has two eyes. (She also appears to have an offspring…) / Maryam D’Abo played the Bond Girl in 1987’s ‘The Living Daylights’ (one of my favourite Bond Films). Cool! She’s not in this film, but I’m not raising any objections to her presence here. / Finally, here is everyone’s favourite paranoid megalomaniacal xenophobic dictator, from the film ‘V for Vendetta’ it’s clearly John Hurt! (He also, IMDB informs me, played wand-maker Ollivander in the first Harry Potter film, a much more benign role) So… that was that. It was actually a very big premiere in the sense that they closed off all of the centre of Leicester Square and had footbridges to not one but two separate cinemas. Oh, and Yellow Cap Guy update – I saw him wandering around at lunch, and I assume he found his way into the central part where all the cool kids got to. Next up : it’s hard to say – the BFI Film Festival has lots of premieres, first showings and gala screenings… For now, it’s the latest film to join The Archive of Film Premieres The last few entries of which were: / The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus – Gilliam! Cole! Garfield!? / Pixar’s ‘Up’ – Literally no (0) cast or crew showed! / Creation – Bettany – Yes! Connelly – No!) / The Ugly Truth – Heigl! Butler! / Inglourious Basterds – Tarantino! Kruger! But not Pitt! ... now, when will I have enough celeb shots to make a second Calendar of Movie Celebs?!!! / Until next time!
