  • Mummification was a very important element of the Papuan culture, the preserved body of a village’s big man, an elder, chief or a great warrior was regarded as a link with ancestors. The process involved hanging the corpse in a specially build house over a fire, and smoking it continuously for up to a year. Indonesians regarded the tradition as barbaric, prohibited the procedure, confiscated and destroyed most of the mummies in the area. This is one of three survivors in the Baliem valley. Photo: a real smoked Papuan 300 years old mummy. / Smoke and glow (embers) added digitally. Baliem valley, 15 km from Wamena, Irian Jaya (Indonesian Papua).

The smoking process doesn’t protect from rodents though – you can see the teeth-marks all over the hands of the mummy. Baliem valley, 15 km from Wamena, Irian Jaya (Indonesian Papua).

  • I felt inspired to do a teddy bear picture after realising how much of a part teddies played in my life. My parents bought me a teddy for my first Christmas (1950) and it survived until I grew up, then went to live on top of a wardrobe (Teddy, not me) in my parents’ bedroom. After they died I couldn’t find it, so my Dad must have binned it … what a way to go after 37 years of being part of the family :-( I have always liked Winnie the Pooh (the original Ernest Shepard drawings) and Paddington Bear and Garfield, etc. I was inspired to include the box of chocolates because a young woman I sometimes exchange Bubblemails with often mentions chocolates. I’m deliberately not saying who she is and then dozens of women will Bubblemail me saying, “Is it me? I like chocolate” :)) I am offering copies of this picture for sale as cards, so if you know anyone who loves teddy bears AND chocolate … roll up and buy one :)) FEATURED BY ILLUSTRATION GROUP – 19th May 2008

  • From a film shoot I did in China and this lady is an extra on set. I was struck first by the light and what made it perfect for me was her position, her pose was so of the period. The way she sits so “proper”.

  • This makes me want to cry as I find it very moving. A tiny baby moorhen flaps its wings to get its Mummy to give it a worm for tea. You can just make out tiny prehistoric-like claws on the end of its little wings. Adorable. Taken with Nikon D50 using 70-400mm lens.
