Artwork from Ireland. (Original painting has been done in Acrylics on board) / A summer scene in my hometown of Galway which is on the west coast of Ireland. This was my first ever painting of my own subject matter and I did it in acrylics when I was about 18 years old. I’ve done it in a ‘pointillist’ style as I am very influenced by the French post-Impressionist painters and most particularly, Georges Seurat (1855-1891) who invented the post-impressionist style of ‘Pointillism’ and influenced Signac to paint in the same style. I completed this painting after completing a replica of one of Georges Seurat’s paintings – ‘The Seine at La Grande Jatte’. It was for a college assignment. We were to firstly pick a painting from a great Master, replicate it then do a painting of a similar subject matter using the same style. Pointillism is use of complementary coloured dots placed adjacent to each other or slightly overlapping to create extra colours while viewed from a distance. In a sense it is like optical colour mixing and a study of light. The effect that is created is what Seurat referred to as ‘emotion. This particular scene (my interpretation of Seurat’s ‘Pointillist’ style) is of ‘The University College Boat Club’ in Galway. Galway is a small city in the west of Ireland and is my hometown, so where better to start for an interesting subject matter. In the background, you’ll see some red pre-fabricated buildings and because this was painted many years ago, these pre-fabs no longer exist. In fact there is quite a large building there now. This is a special request of images chosen from my Asia Series for a friend of mine on RedBubble :) Front cover image Legend of Little Geisha / art and story by K Taylor (4/09) / .....in the village of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan lived a poor couple who wove and carved for a living. The couple had no real possessions but were content with the beauty of the mountains and the sea surrounding them, and happy to be together. The only thing they wished for and did not yet have, was a child to call their own. One day, an ancient crone visited their home and as always, the couple offered their hospitality, gave her rice cakes and sake to warm her belly. The old crone, in return for their kindness, bestowed upon the couple the ability to have a girl child. The child grew from a seed into a strong and beautiful young woman, glowing with pride and joy, she was the delight of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan, and many young suitors came to visit and pay her homage. But as is the way with old crones, you can never quite trust them to do you a favour without some twist in the tale. Unfortunately, the seed from which the child grew, began to sprout roots, and she was bound to the earth. In time the beautiful young girl became a majestic tree and all the birds from near and far came to perch and nest in her branches, she gave them shelter from the wind and rain, and everyone who knew the legend realised the tree was actually the Little Geisha…. the end

“Hole of Horcum “ / The Hole of Horcum is a section of the valley of the Levisham Beck in the North York Moors of northern England, upstream of Levisham and Lockton. The hollow is 400ft deep and stretches 3/4 of a mile across. A “Devil’s Punchbowl” type feature, local legend has it that the amphitheatre was made by a giant, who scooped up a large ball of earth and tossed it aside to create a nearby hill, Blakey Topping.
