  • Duart Castle (Caisteal Dhubhairt, in Gaelic) is a castle on the west coast of Scotland, located on the Isle of Mull, within the council area of Argyll and Bute. The castle dates back to the 13th century and was the seat of the Clan MacLean. [edit] History / Duart Castle is the historical base for the Clan MacLean, whose recorded history dates back to 1367.[1] In 1647, Duart Castle was attacked and laid siege to by the Argyll government troops of Clan Campbell, but they were defeated and driven off by the Royalist troops of Clan MacLean. In September 1653, a Cromwellian task force of six ships anchored off the castle, but the Macleans had already fled to Tiree. A storm blew up on the 13 September and three ships were lost, including HMS Swan. In 1678, Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, son of the Marquess of Argyll, successfully invaded the Clan MacLean lands on the Isle of Mull and garrisons Duart Castle. Later in 1691 Duart Castle was surrendered by the Clan MacLean to the chief of Clan Campbell, Archibald Campbell, 1st Duke of Argyll. The castle was abandoned in 1751. However, it was bought by Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean, the 26th Chief of the Clan MacLean, in 1911, and has since been restored. The castle was used as a location in the 1999 film Entrapment, starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. / Wikipedia

  • Tobermory Not the ‘classic’ view of Tobermory, but I was pleased with this one, nonetheless. Someone evidently spends a lot of time caring for this beautiful garden, and with that view, who can blame them. Tobermory is the ‘capital’ of the Isle of Mull, the 2nd largest of the Inner Hebridean islands and the 4th largest of the Scottish islands. Mull has been inhabited for around 8000 years, but Tobermory was established as recently as 1788 by the British Society for Encouraging Fisheries. Due to its proximity to Oban, it was never a big success as a fishing port, but many yachtsmen (and photographers) have had reason to thanks its founders! Date: 19th August 2008

  • My Favourite images from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Including the Isles of Mull and Skye, Glencoe, Rannoch Moor and the West Coast.

  • The view towards Torr Head, which is 6.6 miles from Cushendun, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. This is the closest point between Northern Ireland and Scotland, 12 miles, and the Mull of Kintyre can be seen in the distance. This headland was important in the 1800s for recording the passage of transatlantic ships with the information being relayed to Lloyds of London. Also on the headland are the walls and ruins of Altagore cashel which date back to the sixth century. I had not visited this location since, roughly, 1972. My dad was driving a Ford Transit and as we were driving up the narrow road you see a car coming down the hill and being driven very fast almost crashed into us causing my father to swerve. The van hit a stone on the verge bending a track-rod end. He walked to a nearby farmhouse and the farmer brought a tractor down, put a chain round the rod and pulled it straight(ish). While all this was going on my mother, brother, sister and I were sent to the farm where we got tea and fresh baked soda bread. The farmer’s wife smoked and I remember my mum later buying cigarettes and posting them to her with a thank-you note. The farm is now derelict, although it looks like it is being maintained to a certain standard. Finding myself in the area one day I decided to visit Torr Head and the memories came flooding back. • Shot last year at Tobermory on the Isle of Mull Scotland / Shot with a NIkon D70s and 18-70mm lens. Tobermory was built as a fishing port in the late 18th century and is now the main village on Mull. It is a picture-postcard of a place with the brightly painted buildings along the main street to the pier and the high wooded hills surrounding the bay. The village has a good variety of shops, hotels, and other accommodation as well as being the administrative centre for the island. The harbour is always busy with fishing boats, yachts and the ferry to and from Kilchoan during the summer months. There is reputed to be the wreck of a Spanish galleon somewhere in the mud at the bottom of the bay. The ship was part of the defeated Armada of 1588 and was fleeing the English fleet when she anchored in Tobermory to take on provisions. Following a dispute over payment the ship caught fire which caused the gunpowder to explode. She was supposed to have been carrying millions of gold coins when she went to the bottom but no-one has ever managed to find any significant treasure. Recently, Tobermory has been the setting for the children’s programme Balamory. /
