Somersby Falls NSW after some heavy rain – Sept 2008
Tadpoles and frogs caught by kids in floodwater. Luckily this was a catch-and-release operation, but kids will be kids…! Found in the melonholes linked by floodwater on a property north of Goondiwindi. All of the growth stages are represented, from a tiny tadpole to the partially developed midway stages, right up to the fully formed frog. A bit of a mini cycle of life caught on camera, as well as showing how life directions can be altered by things far beyond your control…
Meet Dakota, the newest member to my family. I was in cleaning the house and happened to look out the window and my beautiful White Retriever was digging in the mud where the hose was running. A shower before the storm in the Great Smoky Mountains. This was made from the breezeway or dog-trot of Ephraim Bales Cabin, located along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Two types of fencing can also be seen in the picture. A rock wall on the left and a wooden picket fence on the right. The sound of the rain falling in the forest was as relaxing for me as it was for Ephraim over a hundred years ago.

Hernandez / Results: finished 1st Camera: Canon Rebel XT w/ Canon 75-300mm lens / as is, from the camera, just cropped in photoshop Weather: Very cloudy… track was a mess until Race 6 when it was upgraded to “good.” Panning shot of the winner of Race 5. Loved how I caught the jockey biting his lip. For anyone who knows me, you know I do that while riding, too. Bad habits die hard. Once I managed to bite down over a jump on my old pony in a riding lesson and I nearly bit through my tongue! I am passionate about all horses, but have always had a dream to own and train my own racehorses someday. It probably won’t happen until I retire, if it does happen, but that’s the fun thing about dreams… you can have them even if they aren’t likely to happen. Although, I have been trying to get a plan together for getting friends together after college graduation to go in and buy a share of a racehorse with my boyfriend and I… so maybe it’ll happen sooner than I think :0) Thanks for your views and comments friends! My first attempt at horse racing photography. Enjoy! ♥ Louisville, Kentucky

Highland Coo on a misty hillside.
There it came. Bobbing along like the most bizarre thing to have passing our way while shooting; it was the most bizarre thing to have passing our way. Cathy recognized it immediately: a kayak without a paddler. This looked bad – very, very bad and she quickly headed upstream to see if there was someone in the water. Nothing was visible and with the water at the speed it was traveling, it wouldn’t be promising to find someone pinned against a rock even if his head was above water. But with an undertow that had to be unreal just below the surface, finding a body wouldn’t be likely any time soon. We quickly gave up and started back to to the sad duty of telling the rangers what we’d found. There might have been 90 minutes of good light left in a very cloudy day. The kayak was easily visible from some landmark locations so we were confident we could describe exactly where to tell the authorities to look for it and once back to the car, we walked across the street to file a report. The very kind ranger informed us that she had just seen a group of cars with kayak racks on the top doing her rounds but nobody was close by. The distance from where Cathy first spotted the kayak wasn’t encouraging either. For someone to survive the distance in massive runoff water flow that would freeze a swimmer in moments would have to be an act of God. I’m not sure a human could have survived it at low flow for that long. I left my card with the ranger and went to work Monday. I returned home to this message from the ranger we reported to: “Thanks very much for letting us know about the empty kayak yesterday. I thought you’d like to know that we found the kayaker safe and uninjured. Fellow kayakers had rescued his kayak and they were reunited.” Woo hoo! They not only found the kayaker alive but got him reunited with his buddies and his buddies came thru with collecting his boat! WOW, talk about a LOAD off my heart and I immediate wrote back thanking the kind ranger for being so considerate as to write and tell me what had happened after we left. There have been stories all over the news about how incredible the water flow is on all the area rivers right now. There have also been stories about how much the kayakers are loving the highest flow in 4 years. There were no stories of accidents or death and this one is a story only the people in Red Bubble will be reading today – a story with a happy ending. :-) I deeply thank the purchaser of this image!
